  • Watch how country boy Jacob raises day-old Leghorn chicks to maturity and egg laying on the modern Manitoulin Island homestead where he lives. Backyard chickens are great fun and practical, as you'll see.

What a handsome rooster! A perfect shape. I love Leghorns. That upright posture, heavy egg laying, pretty plumage, heat tolerance, clean orange legs. They come in some spectacular colors of Brown and Golden Cuckoo Duckwing - see what this rooster looks like! Mind blowing. A very nice chicken all around. They don't do well in the cold as their combs can get frostbite. You may want rose combs or cold hardy birds.
The Leghorn comes from Livorno, Italy. It should have been named Livorno but the Brits could not pronounce it right.
It is a prolific layer. It is an agile, and intelligent chicken but a bit noisy. They are excellent foragers.
PEOPLE - please make sure that the chickens you get are suited for your climate. They suffer if too hot or cold for them.

Great documentary video; I liked how you show the hatchlings, and how they look a few months later. These chickens are living a great life as free range birds, and produce MANY high quality eggs. Flocks like this are fantastic, and I would be glad to get the very best eggs from a source like this one.

Do they poop when they sleep with u at night? What do u do when they have ti go to the bathroom? I want to bring mine in the house but don't jnow what to do about that

    • @mjremy2605

@@jaestylzz No! Not the house. Leave them outside. They like to forage and may eat some toxic stuff inside the house or block their intestines with some bad thing. Not safe for them. Plus they are pooping machines.

I have a leghorn rooster who does not know how to mate with our hens. But he loves dry humping with our flip flops. Then I bought another rooster (asian breed) to show him how its done. It appears there is a bit of improvement but still he cannot mount himself and ended up hurting the hen's neck.

while raising your leghorns did any of them go from solid white to brown? I have 10 leghorns that are roughly 3 or 4 weeks old and 9 of them have brown feathers for right now and one is still pure white?

I have a question does this female hen lay eggs without mating with male...? If so how it's possible..

    • @johnkrupnik8717
      @johnkrupnik8717 ปีที่แล้ว

A chicken doesn't need a rooster to lay eggs he's just fertilizes the egg to make it hatchable if you want baby chicks back in the day everybody had a rooster with their chickens so they could be self-sustainable so they could reproduce a new flock every year it's good to have at least one rooster though roosters are half the fun about raising chickens

    • @mjremy2605

A hen's eggs are the same as a woman's menstruation. Every month an egg will drop. A hen lays the egg. In a human female, the egg is released from the ovaries to the Fallopian tube where it awaits fertilization. If a sperm makes it to the egg, it is fertilized and descends into the uterus where it develops into a human baby.
In a chicken, it is very similar. The egg readies to come out. Rooster mates, the sperm gets into the egg, and when it is laid, it has a tiny red dot inside it, which is the chick embryo. If you eat it, no chick. If you incubate it under the hen or in a machine, you get the chick.
Whether the rooster mates on top of a hen or not, you still get the egg. It is a daily thing. With humans it is a monthly thing. Read up on it. Each breed of hen has different egg output, some are heavy layers with 300 - 350 eggs per year, while others may do 140 eggs per year. It depends on breed, climate (winter they don't lay as much), individual hen, and type of food you give. There is a LOT of reading you must do if you bring any animal into your life. Meet the needs, know everything about it, and be an expert before you get one. Don't experiment on a live animal and kill it through lack of knowledge, that is unforgiveable and bad karma. Do your research please. Also, get the animal that meets your NEEDS not your desires. It is like a marriage. It must match you and you must be able to offer it what it needs. No stress on either side.

The one person who down voted this must be a liberal vegan. Why would you down vote self reliance and providing for family?
How does your dog handle these birds in the yard? My weimaraner constantly sniffs and stares through our fence at the neighbors free range chicks. Being a bird dog, I'm near certain he would take one alive. I've seen him catch a robin in mid flight taking off from under a tree.

Hi Braden! Thanks for taking the time to comment. Yes, most dogs would have make short work of chickens if they could, but we're quite fortunate with our dog. While she's interested in them, she's never hurt one yet. And that's even when they're free ranging with her unattended. She's a golden retriever/poodle cross and by far the best dog we've ever owned. She's gentle and super-obedient and smart enough to make me want to hide the keys to the truck ;-)
Bye for now, Braden! And thanks for watching.

Mine will chase, but if they peck she runs lol. She's kinda scared of them. Especially chicks and bunnies. IDK why but she's terrified of baby animals
