My kids school is sending home 2 baby chicks with my daughters. I live smack dab in the middle of the city and have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks for this tutorial!
That’s how my family started having chickens. One day, my older sister brought home some chicks from daycare when I was two, we’ve have them continuously now for over 10 years. Although I live in a quite rural area, so it’s not quite the same situation as you.
My grandma just showed up at home yesterday with a baby chicken and I already love him ! I am taking care of him and your video was extremely helpful, thank you !
1 baby chicken needs a few friends.....remember a chicken isn't a cat or a dog..these animals are flock animals and handling them too much can kill them. You need a few more and a brooder setup or you'll most likely loose your chicken to illness. Google it...I'm telling ya the truth....nobody should ever sell anyone "a chick" that's why typically they sell them in a batch of 3 minimum
When I grow up I want to be a doctor but I also want to have a farm full of chickens and chicks it’s my dream..you really did inspire me I have 2 baby chicks but my mom will take them away from me when they become chickens since we don’t have a proper place to keep them. That’s why I want to have my own farm also because chickens are the cutest animals ever!! love from Mexico!
Got my first chicks today..with everything going on in the world..figured it would be best to get some chickens to become more self sufficient..thanks for the video :)
I raise chicks and the rocks in the waterer is a first rate idea! I always lose a couple because they get wet and die of hypothermia. Also, you must not have many varmints in NC. My first setup was exactly like yours... next morning 25 chicks were gone! I built a secure cage with hinged doors on top made out of 2x4s and chicken wire. I haven’t lost one since! Great video. I wish I had seen it a year ago! I would have had to learn so many hard lessons!
I have been doing lots of research for the past few months about these beautiful baby creatures, I do have all the materials and space and everything needed to give them an amazing life. Thank you for the information, I'll be getting my chicks tomorrow!
Thank God for farmers ! If I raised chickens, cows, pigs, they would all become pets with names and that's not good, so I'll just let you guys do it and thank you again ! Great video Josh.
My Mom and Dad grew up on small farmers. They picked an Animal named it and took care of it like their kid. Like all proud parents they compared their kid to their sibling's kids. When butchering time happen they cried their eyes out like they lost a child or friend. As time went on the learned not to get to close.
It all depends on how many you get and what their purpose is. I love every single one of my laying chickens and their roosters. If we get meat chickens, you usually get a lot at once and they are ready for the freezer in like 2 months, so you don't have nearly enough time to get really attached. Now if I have a chick that was originally supposed to be for meat but it was sick or get injured and I had to nurse it back to health many I spent a lot of time with them and we bonded, they usually get spared and sent to general "pet" chicken population lol. Many also cull their laying chickens that have stopped laying...I don't do that. They get to retire peacefully here 😂
august same here. I was raised to help grandparents butcher chickens but mine are my pets. Couldn’t do it now. As of 2 months ago I became a new chicken mamma.
I know how to raise chicks but I like to watch other people just to see how they raise them. I have 6 chicks right now and the mom is raising them. She is such a good mom.
great...now please don't be hard on yourself if you lose one or two...you can do everything right and still have some loss....it's normal so please be prepared mentally for the loss...maybe it won't happen...but have your heart prepared..it's not your fault if it happens
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer oh I’d be so sad. But I do understand that happens.
