Best interview to date.. one of the most genuine and straight talking sales trainer out there without the gimmicks and marketing.. he’s just good.. that’s it.. no major billboards and 50 Instagram videos a day needed to tell he’s good at sales
I'm not a salesman but this is so chock full of great information! The Drama Triangle! Conditioning to not talk to strangers, scaleability, getting pass gatekeepers....damn this is good stuff!
What's this? A no pitch podcast with awesome content that's actually laid back and real and not cringey/gimmicky - wow, now i have something for morning listening. Daaamn.
The thing we all forget as we get older is that sales skills need to be constantly refreshed, sales training should be a permanent fixture in our diaries and professional development agenda. It doesn't matter if you've been selling for 2 years or 20 years (like me), you get rusty and complacent and even simply stop closing and asking for the godamned money. So, thank you Mike Winnet and Benjamin Dennehy for relighting my fire, telling some home truths and creating this video that has re-sparked my fire. Brilliant stuff.
Thanks to both of you for giving my question some real thought, this is a brilliant interview. "People buy emotionally rather than intellectually" will be emblazoned into my brain moving forwards. P.S The irony is Mike is in danger of becoming a cult icon for sales people everywhere.
I've had similar emails sent to me and it made me double check to see what it was about. Then i decided response or no response. In theory it's not that bad depending on the relationship you've established.

Wow! This interview is so eye opening. Love that you talk about business on this channel as well as calling out the unethical practices. Great balance between showing us what not to do and how we can become better business people.
spent 2 years watching videos on business on youtube, this one is the best because its all true, from guys who have done the hard yards and know the satisfaction of success.
I did better on a basic. The basic covering my basic necessities. Rent, food, travel, small purchases. It was viewed that my basic covers what's required. Everything else is a bonus. Due to that I had no pressure. Sales came in, being the highest paid sales person for the company for the East midlothian region. My attitude was that I feel good if I'm helping someone smile and be better off than the currently are. Coming from that place and having my basic needs met. There you go. It does depend on the belief of what makes me happy being as I explained above mind. Great job Mike x love the vibe x
Last five minutes is gold. Write it down. Listen to it 5 times. Write it down again. Do 30 pushups. Then hop on the phone and do exactly what he said. It'll change your life.
I laughed a lot during this video, mostly due to the graphics...well done. The comment about not hearing from Benjamin's mom in a few weeks had me rolling! Great info too.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I learned a lot and it re enforced a lot of beliefs I have had around the sales function. And I appreciate the honesty of the hosts. If either of you are reading this comments section, I do have one question. It always bothered me when I did the odd bit of sales work. You speak about the importance of gaining decision makers trust on a sales call. I agree with that. But a few minutes before you were talking about strategies of deceiving or blowing through gatekeepers. How can you get people to trust a sales bod who has just bullshitted their way past the secretary?
It's not about gaining their trust in your integrity as a person. It's about gaining their trust that you can help them get what they want. If anything, outmaneuvering a gatekeeper shows that you have the traits necessary to get them what they want: competence, creativity and an ability to win (as long as you don't take the "cheating" too far, of course).
This is LEGITIMATELY one of the best things I've watched since I've been in business. Sales is an area that I need to grow in in my business, and I've never actually thought I should directly contact people. How have I never heard this before?! It's the simplest fucking solution!
Thanks Gemma. Worked really well for me in my last business. It's an area a lot avoid because it can be horrible tbh. But if you follow a process enough times you'll get results.
@@MikeWinnet my first jobs were in telesales, and I think that put me off. But I've never connected the dots and thought I should actively target people in that way - I KNOW HOW TO DO THAT. Get to the NO. Once you know the key objection, you can really begin the actual sale. Most salespeople are terrified of no, and simply have a nice little conversation and then an excuse for why they didn't make the sale. Learn to be happy when someone says no. Best lesson I had as a salesperson.
Hmm, "the hidden cost of sales" very interesting hidden wastes should be found and overcome most of the time. Thank you for this learning for a life time video interview.

@Michael M That's not proof. There's a lot of variables that need to be in place for that to be proof. I've not been able to see any proper case study that he's released that proves his methods consistently work.
Great listen. Mike, early on you mention a story of when you started saying no more to prospects and in turn you increased # of sales and AOV. I have a feeling I personally need to be doing this more today to prospects, I'm curious to know what were the reasons that made you stop being a people pleaser and start saying no? (felt you often lacked control?, wanted every cent you cold get? etc)
Couldn't be arsed driving to meetings with people that really wanted a 30 minute break from thejob they should be doing. NO ONE needs you to go to see them face to face for a meeting - as proven by what's happened recently. So instead of spending 4-6 hour round trips, I'd just refuse and ... the sign up rate didn't drop (at all) freed up additional hours to sell and forced me to not just book random meetings on a whim, it was a "who REALLY needs to see this product there - let me set them on a trial too" type convo.
I love all of Bens techniques but struggle to put some of it into place in B2E (education) sales. Up front contacts are tough to get yes to because there are so many decision makers not present requiring several levels of meetings, and board approvals required after the presentations. Any help or suggestions on this?
I thoroughly agree with the things he's laid out other than the paint by #'s theory. I could be absolutely wrong, but most of my success in sales has come from making sure to do absolutely nothing other sales people do. Once you're a popular sales trainer if your methods are easily copied. Then they will be implemented on a scale I think these "guru's" don't understand. If 1000 people use your methods a small amount relative to the real scammers. Then, 1000 people making 200 calls a day, plus the bastardized version spreading among their peer group after they make you a messiah, the odds your prospect has heard what you say is I high. I believe the opposite of "paint by numbers" I think to be a great salesperson you have to be original, and able to forge your own path. Most sales people are too stupid for this, and as they copy the hottest new methods those techniques will work until they reach market saturation. The getting past the gatekeeper method you outline is a good one considering, 99% of people don't have the balls to implement it, so it's safe. However I can assure you " This is a sales call" is getting worn out right now, Sandler sales systems has been pushing the "mini contract" for decades, it works, but it works less and less every single year. Everyone is going after large targets with the same methods. Get ready for the ass whipping of a lifetime, you have to be able to do something your competition can't; that's applicable in sales and in life. My sales strategy works, and because it works I will never share it. If a sales method is truly revolutionary it would never be available for sale. It's common sense if there's a magical formula, or even a more effective than average method, the only way to protect it's advantage is to keep it a secret. That's the fact of life. That's the brutal truth. Sales training at it's highest value may provide an Idea or angle you haven't' thought of. That's it. These trainers pretend to be able to provide mind control, that's what they allege. They can't, but you can, if you can be effective, and your methods can't be copied without extreme effort. I won't write a thesis, but there's two factors that people are most reluctant or unable to copy, Aggression & IQ. That's it. Actual IQ not "tactics" or reading, the score on the fucking test. Those answers are brutal, and that's why you are being lied to. There's no money at all in the truth, also I'll add prospecting is easy as fuck if you actually get good at it. Took me 9 years of constant change to find something that works. Any, sales team I've been a part of when they send in the new guys to learn from me, they tell them do not copy me. They say "I'm crazy" that's what losers think about winners "they're crazy" so if they think you're crazy you're on the right track. All, that being said this is the best advice I've seen in my life. The closest to honesty that's available right now, and B/C of market saturation, this will slowly become a video of lies, that used to be truths.
This sounds really awesome and I have a question. Would you agree with the guy in the video that you need to be an actor in order to be a good salesman? I'm not in sales, but when I used to do a tiny bit of it I was pretty good, and I like to think it was because of my honesty, not because of a script. So basically I'm one of the dummies the guy in the video talks about :P But I want to believe you can be a good salesperson without acting - to be a good salesperson by straight up helping people.
@20:15 cost of goods sold is part of accounting. But I agree there is a lot of dead weight in sales and retentions, because people join without any skills and have to learn on the job, sales isnt pleasant but it is often one of the few jobs hiring.

@20:15 cost of goods sold is part of accounting. But I agree there is a lot of dead weight in sales and retentions, because people join without any skills and have to learn on the job, sales isnt pleasant but it is often one of the few jobs hiring.
Fantastic podcast. Hits home on a number of points.
This podcast is solid gold. Love it!
Great podcast - Mike do you recommend any good books for salespeople? Thanks.
Thanks mate.
I don't really read too many. For the basics, 'Brilliant Selling' is decent.
Holy shit. I stuck this on not expecting much and learnt and came out with some absolute fucking Gems. Legends!
Absolutely fascinating.
Thanks 👍🏼
What''s the deal with the fraud mentioned at about 27:04? Are you supporting this methodology or saying it was the improper way to sell?
Which bit?
Mike Winnet the process mentioned at about 27:04 to about 27:40 that was used by top sellers in the company.
@@derek8742 can't tell from that time stamp, but if it was the bit where I got sacked for copying the guys commiting fraud... No, I wouldn't recommend that.
14:00 is gold
Mario, where is Luigi?
Looked forward seeing Benjamin on the show.
Honestly, Benjamin, great tips. Shame Dan Disney wouldn't come. Also from the south coast.
Never considered it important to be liked to sell, being honest and building trust is what it takes to be successful in sales if possible cut a good deal on commission only and generate all or most of your own leads,DEALZ MEANZ MEALZ
Honesty is refreshing.
Great Interview, will definitely do as the rude guy said to do :)
GREAT HAT. I bet the sight of that upsets plenty of people.
Great video, keep em coming
As an American who gets very little obscene sarcasm and satire in her diet, thank you.
