Hi Andy , I just discovered your channel yesterday and I find your videos very interesting. What particularly appeals to me is that you can also tour with a simple cheap folding bike. I once met a bicycle traveler in Chiangmai northern Thailand who traveled all over Asia with an old fully loaded mountain bike. What I thought was cool was the many stickers on his frame and the really very worn bike. He looked very adventurous. You also give nice information about everything around touring and technical facts. I will definitely continue to follow you. Good luck and greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪😄
thanks, i appreciate that you take the time to comment! i really enjoy riding in Belgium, especially Limburg, there are great cycle paths and nice forests
@@hobocyclist Yes indeed Limburg in Belgium is fantastic for touring. The bike paths are of the best quality and there is also a lot of nature. I love the locals very much too , they are so friendly. 👍❤
Great video Andy. I wouldn't pack the bike in the tent though. I'd be scared of making a hold in it somehow. But of course, the principle is great! :) I've being have this idea, along with a folding bike car camping for a while now. Summer is somewhere on the horizon here in England. :)
ive packed it in the tent before with only slight damage, trick is to strap the poles and fly to the frame of the bike and extra padding could also be added. it made a hole in the floor of the tent from the bike axle, theses could be removed too and packed carefully so as not to lose the bearings.. most of the time though this packing is happening at the airport or roadside, so its semi professional!
yeah but nothing major, the axles made holes in the tarp then water can get in if youre sleeping under it.. baggage handlers will throw it around, next time i will use cardboard and pack it tight
Some useful tips on your video so thank you. In my quest for an airline compatible bike I have gone through almost every major brands offerings. For myself the Brompton with 16 inch wheels is not suitable, the Birdy is far too expensive & obscure parts, Dahon leaves me feeling like they are cutting far too many corners & no longer competitive which brought me to Tern for their quality & value. I am concerned about the half fold frame hinge though developing looseness over the miles & causing flex in the frame. Is my concern valid or has Tern managed to make a super strong frame hinge now? Thank you.
You share my same concerns on these popular brand folding bikes. I have moved away from tern and instead use generic China brand aluminium folding bike on my current tour and it has performed very well. Strength and performance of the frame , wheels, gears & handlebars is number one concern when using a folding bike for touring and for that reason none of the high end brands made the cut. Check out some of the other vids here on my channel, there are lots maybe start here th-cam.com/video/i02ogbpGlyw/w-d-xo.html best of luck finding a bike for air travel!
@@hobocyclist I was using this same technique, and one time got inspected and told them some "bike parts" which they seemed a bit unsure of but let it on. another time they asked "is this a stroller?" I didn't correct them.

Im really excited to! As soon as restrictions end and we can fly again ill be making these kind of vids!
Good info
thanks!
Have you ever had any damage using the tarp pack method? I'm suprised to not see any padding around any parts!
yeah but nothing major, the axles made holes in the tarp then water can get in if youre sleeping under it.. baggage handlers will throw it around, next time i will use cardboard and pack it tight
@@hobocyclist that'd probably be enough protection if that's all you've seen, thanks for the info!

i am surprised that your bike survived the luggage handling of numerous airlines
hahaha take that, eurolines!
