    Have to agree with the other comments. This is very comprehensive. I was concerned pre-covid about travelling with my new Brompton especially putting the bike onto a plane. Baggage handlers can be pretty rough. Also, I've heard that Brompton bikes are often stolen when being transported through airports. However, I haven't put travelling with a cycle to the test because Covid has seen to that.

      I guess it’s like most things in life, there’s an element of risk, this works for me and many others using this bag and similar packing methods.

    A+++. Just what I do. The Dimpa bag is the way to go. Wish IKEA did an opaque one though perhaps they do, I don't know. I use a tough outer Cordura black bag same size as the Dimpa bag in which I place the bike and Dimpa bag. I also use a foam mat to give more protection around the Brompton which also goes under my air mattress in the tent to give it more protection from punctures. I take the pedals off as well as I have SPDs. Do you deflate the tyres?
    Flying with a Brompton is certainly easier than with a full sized bike. I find with a full sized bike in a bike box the worst and most costly bit is actually getting it to the airport as obviously it is boxed up ready for check in and usually I would be reliant on costly taxis and possibly staying in a nearby hotel the night before. It's not too bad having arrived at an airport having flown in, as you just ditch the box having assembled your bike.

    Very similar to what I do Terry. Lately I put a cheap camping mattress cut a little smaller around the bike where you put your sleeping bag instead. Not having to carry a tent does leave you with a lot of space and nice to see how you can simply go with the small red bag as carry on. Thanks

    • @terrysallbikes
      @terrysallbikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks your comments much appreciated. I guess there are only so many ways you can pack a B in a Dimpa bag. I’m not as young and fit as I was so I’m always trying to keep weight to the necessary minimum

    • @optomediainc
      @optomediainc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What about 4 pieces of cut cardboard, one on each side, on the inside of the camping mat or sleeping bag?

    • @terrysallbikes
      @terrysallbikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if you can get some and carry it with you to the airport, this packing method is what I use when riding to the airport, if I was arriving by bus/ taxi I would try to add additional protection

    • @optomediainc
      @optomediainc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@terrysallbikes Can't you just fold the cardboard and keep it in the front bag, or is that too bulky?
      I wonder how much more piece of mind the official Brompton travel bag might offer. It comes with some sidewall protection, so if you combine that with all the methods you demonstrated here, maybe that can be pretty fail safe. I know it's one more item to carry, but it does sling over your shoulder while you ride.

    • @BromptonTraveler
      @BromptonTraveler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@optomediainc That is also something I have done. Using both gives even more peace of mind as the cardboard does help with protecting things.

    I take my frame clamps and pedals in my carry on, because the bike can't function without them if the bag gets opened and they disappear. I also double up on the dimpa bag.

    Where does your tent go, in the dimpa or carry on?
    Also, what weight is the fully packed dimpa, I guess you just keep putting stuff in til you get close to 20kg?

    • @terrysallbikes
      @terrysallbikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In this instance the tent is in the carry on bag, but I have put in in the Dimpa bag, it’s good padding. You’re correct regarding the weight, I do a trial pack at home checking the weight and pack the same way for the return flight

    I’m a bit disappointed because this does seem like the best solution for Ryan air, but it still seems too big and “luggagey” to carry on which definitely screws up my masterplan of saving money by getting a second hand Brompton by travelling to the uk. I wish there was a way to at least wear the bag, like a backpack? Basically more of a canvas like material version of the dumps bag that had 2 straps, I think it could divert some investigative efforts… also, perhaps removing the seat, but as a non owner I don’t know what difficulties are involved with removing the seat post so I am not sure….

    • @terrysallbikes
      @terrysallbikes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Removing the seat post is very easy but I don’t think it will get it down to a size where you can take it as a carry on bag.

      I use the IKEA bag because it folds down small and is light enough to carry with me when touring, cost doesn’t come into it , I’m not aware of any other bag that does this.
