The way farm animals are treated is so horrific. These are creatures who are fully capable of feeling pain and love
Commercial farms, yes. Small time farms and homesteads often treat them wonderfully and give them good lives.

@@h.s.6269 It depends. I’ve been to farmers markets and seen them treat their animals pretty terribly too, though I’m sure not all are bad
The problem is, once you fall in love, it's really hard to kill them, or eat them. I had a predator get in and kill a couple, and I'm sure the meat was fine, but we buried them. I couldn't imagine eating a friend, or giving her body to someone else to eat. The eggs are another story though. Organic, free range seem to be the best, and since my livelihood doesn't depend on their meat, I'm happy to just collect the eggs.
@@vanessanicole828 for no justification? How about survival and health? People need to eat, plain and simple. And plants don't provide all the nutrients you need, nor many calories for whole families.

I second that! Absolutely horrible what animals raised for domestic use endure, inc. chickens. Reprehensibly cruel treatment for the sake of profit. I no longer eat meat.
The uncaged ones also experience this. In *cage free facilities*, they are still packed in one on top of the other, still suffocated with the stench of ammonia, still genetically modified to grow so fast their legs cannot support their own body weight...
@@Itsunclegabby Very true - cage free facilities are horrors!! Workers comb through the crowded aisles, pulling out dead chickens every day! The chickens never see the sun or have grass under their feet. This knowledge leg me to having pet chickens for eggs. Happy chickens = happy, healthy eggs!
I could not agree more. The way we treat caged hens is nothing short of repulsive. Real change is needed urgently. There’ll be a price to pay for what we do to Gods creatures.
Its forbidden in Denmark to hold hens caged. Lets hope it spreads !

I've been called chicken maniac as I just can't get people's lack of empathy towards chickens while being so kind to dogs and cats. I hope some centuries in the future we'll no longer have to kill to eat.

What an inspiring story. I take care of my rescue hens, but none came in as bad as Fleur. That's some top notch humaning on the part of this lady!
Seeing this makes me angry. My wife and I used to keep chickens when we had a decent sized garden. When I used to come home from work they would run up to me squealing with joy. They were an absolute joy to have. One in particular would always jump into your lap when you were sitting down. They are incredibly intelligent and sensitive birds. You show them plenty of love and care and you can have a real bond with them and you get rewarded with lots of love as well as fantastic eggs. I’d like to put their handlers in a damn cage and leave them there, in the dark. Permanently.

It is wonderful to see this dear kind hearted woman take in this horribly abused animal. This poor bird was at the very limits of what she could take. To see her explore the natural world that she had never seen was a joy to watch. Looks like sweet corn and lots of love did the job. Thank you.
Yes, I have to agree. About 20 years ago, I had the opportunity to get some chickens. The only problem was that I couldn't go and get some of those poor birds. I mean I could but didn't have the stomach to see them in such a dreadful state. I wish I had, but I just couldn't walk into that shed and see them all squished up in those tiny cages. Instead I went to a farm where they had hundreds of young birds ready to take home. I took six. Chickens aren't as dumb as people think, I would sit with them every day and they got to know and trust me, they started eating out of my hand and would follow me around as I cleaned their shed every morning. They got to know the cats and dog (who were all scared of them). Chickens are by nature very inquisitive birds and they learn things very easily. Like the chicken in the video cuddling up to the lady, they love contact. As I said my only regret was not saving some poor abused souls 💔 😔 if I could do it again, I would, but I can't where I live now. So I wish this lovely lady all the best as she can do what I couldn't.

Thank you for sharing this amazing story. Yes, hens are sentient beings just like cows, dogs, etc. They are NOT food. They’re subjected to unimaginable levels of cruelty even though humans don’t “need” to eat them. Thank you for the important work you’re doing to bring awareness to this much-neglected issue.

My grandparents always had chickens and I used to play with them when I was a kid: feeding them, petting them... They would follow me around the yard the whole day. Really sweet animals.

I work at a farm sanctuary , and i take care of the chickens, ducks geese, and what people do to them is unspeakable, they are the sweetest birds on the planet
they really are as lovable and personable as any cat, dog, etc. I have many of mine snuggle with me, in fact I just got finished tucking my birds to bed (closing up the coop for the night) and several wanted cuddles- all lined up and waiting to be pet. If I pet one, the other will get jealous. They are delightful! Just yesterday had a baby hen fly up to my shoulder and get under my chin to be held. She was scared of something and wanted to feel safe with me.

I dunno, seeing videos like this just kinda further makes me loose faith in humanity. Because for every lucky Fleur, there's billions of chickens/animals who aren't so lucky. It's such a tiny (tiny) fraction of humanity who actually want to stop creating more Fleurs. The vast majority of people who watch this channel have paid for corporations to treat animals like Fleur. To say nothing of the countless comments on these videos of people saying "who cares chicken's delicious". The majority of humanity will never care about how they make animals suffer.

So touching watching rescue hens thrive from a deplorable state. Animals should not be treated badly for profit as there will always be returns, we will pay for it one way or another.
You can get patterns to knit jumpers for chickens who have lost their feathers
You have to rescue a bird or poultry to realise the connection they soon have with their foster "mum" or "dad", cuddling up in our neck, chirping to us, taking part in our lives - computer, cooking, watering plants, they find everything we do effing fascinating :) .
Oh My Goodness, what an incredible story of a will to survive and a kindhearted peep mom there every step of a very difficult journey! Chickens are indeed sentient beings. I have many pet chickens, each and every one of them intelligent, spirited, and very much individuals. So happy for Fleur! What a beautiful girl she is, inside and out!

This is beautiful! I had two rescue hens, Daphne and Gwendoline. They were fabulous and when they had recovered (Daphne couldn't walk at first and Gwen had a deformed leg), they followed me everywhere. Sometimes I'd find them in the house, sat on the sofa watching the TV!! They'd sit on your knee for strokes and sleep. I loved them so much and still miss them.

This is what cage hens look like. They have a tiny bit more room than the old battery cages squished together.
At 2.5 years old they are then slaughtered.
Unless they are taken on by wonderful ladies like this.
Chickens can make absolutely wonderful pets and can be just as loving as cats or dogs❤
So true. You can opt out of such cruelty by going plant-based, which is the healthiest for us anyways, based on numerous studies. It's also best for the planet.

If we don't kill domestic animals they'll keep multiplying and start creating overpopulation, which will make both them and us suffer. The real way to go cruelty free is to buy meat from animals that have lived a happy life and have been killed humanely

Haidy inspired me to adopt ex-battery hens when I came across her page on Facebook in 2019. We adopted 6 girls in 2021. None of them could walk more than a few steps at a time. They were scared of grass. They were scared of the sun. They were scared of everything. It took our girls a few days to walk properly. But before long our yard became their kingdom. The average life expectancy of an ex-battery chook is 2-12 months. Ours are now 15 months. I know they won't last much longer, but giving them their best 2nd life is all that matters. Thank you, Haidy, for opening my eyes to how much we can give to these poor girls that not many know about.

Revisiting this video, am so glad to read so many kind and supportive comments! I'm reminded of my disabled hen, Claire, a Japanese bantam I rescued last summer. She was living in an extremely overcrowded coop with a "bezillion" teenage chickens, trampled, picked bald, sunbrunt (!!!), flopping around frantically! There was no doubt she was coming home with me. I tried to correct the splayed leg, but it was already so set in place and she appeared to be managing getting around quite well. She recovered very quickly, coconut oil really helped to soothe her damaged and painful skin, and soon began to sprout feathers all over, including on her little bald head. She lives a very peaceful existence inside with two other Japanese bantams, very tame and appreciate of the one-on-one care and attention I give her. I bathe her as needed and she loves that, then contently snuggles in her basket, purring!

I’m so glad they recovered!! Hens have a surprising amount of fight in them - one of my ladies got attacked by a raccoon and had a huge wound on her side. After some medicine and a little while in quarantine to heal she made it back to 100%.
