DJ recently competed at an IBJJF Opens Tournament at Brown Belt and smashed all 6 guys he faced. That was his first time ever competing in a Gi too. He knows what he’s talking about. If he can do that in a Gi, you KNOW his NoGi knowledge is on point because it’s grappling without strikes, with nothing to grab ahold of except the body, just like MMA.

In the begining he’s actually weighting down on his head to tire his opponents posture. If you’ve ever notice on Gordons matches they’re 30mins for a reason. It’s entire premise is based on exhausting his opponents to the point where they’re too tired to do anything. But it starts early on. If they’re both standing he will almost always go straight to the head in order to weight him down. This is why he’s able to “predict” what submission he will go for.
That tied with Danaher’s systems makes him almost untouchable. Once his opponents are exhausted he can easily pick which system he has to go through based on the submission he decided to go for.

QUESTION. How would you compare this match to when Mason Fowler faced Patrick??? Because it's like a 20 minute match in this one versus I think it was like a three minute match with Mason. I know Gordon likes long matches but how would you compare it two?

That armbar setup from the back was amazing. If Gordon wasn't going for just the armbar, in that situation there were like 3-4 different immediate subs from that spot (that i can see, could be more lol) all based on how the person in the armbar wants to get their arm snapped. Chefs Kiss, bro.

if he gets them to the ground the fight is over no matter who they are hell even if they rock him and jump in his guard hes probably sweeping or subbing them however he wants but if he gets sprawl and brawled with no striking its over unless he has good enough striking to hang essentially a bjj khabib or islam

The first part of the match was Gordon wearing out Patrick. You'll notice he keeps his hand heavy on the back of his head and not on the neck where it is a better grip. Giving the leg, so he holds it up and again has to use a lot of strength. Hes basically being a big heavy load for Patrick to carry around. (This was mentioned as part of the game plan for this fight btw - go look it up). Obviously the more someone gets tired the easier they become to beat. In fact Rickson used to say this and used his heart rate as the way to explain it. He would say stuff like when my heart rate is 100 his 120 when mine is 120 his is up at 140-150 and so on. Basically his heart rate would be in Zone 3 or 4 and his opponents would be racing in Zone 5. Its a great strategy if you know how to do it.

I agree without you somewhat about Gordon in MMA. I do not think he’d pass a PED/Drug test.
Which means hed have to cycle off. And how much success do you think he’d have if he was no longer that big?
Aside from that, his gastrointestinal issues probably affect his desire to compete in mma as well. Not sure how his body would react to cutting to 205.
    But awesome breakdown.
It’d be cool if you broke down Tonon vs Palhares or the older EBI videos with Eddie Cummings, Craig Jones, Garry Tonon and Gordon.

Reason why Gordon was on slow mode was because he’s always calling for submissions before matches, so he take all his time to get it. DJ you were right on gassing Patrick’s arms out for that arm bar💯💯 this is why you’re the GOAT, very knowledgeable 💪🏾

Gordon is a pioneer, he’s actively changing the game. He’s progressing the sport by light years because he’s obsessed. He literally trains all day 365 days a year. What kind of freak does that. If you train 5 hrs a day 4 days a week that’s 20hrs of grappling a week or 1040 hrs a year if you never miss a day. Gordon is training like 8 hrs a day 7 days a week. That’s 2912 hrs a year. He’s been doing this for years. So he’s making 3 years of progress for every year his competitors are making. He takes PEDs but everyone he competes against is too so that’s fair game. He needs the PEDs to recover from the training. If he committed to striking the way he does BJJ nobody could touch him in MMA. He would probably only need 1 year of striking to go pro and he could go from there Bo nickals.

@@parmenides2576 I didn’t say it was easy lol. I said he works his ass of harder than just about anyone on the planet at his given sport. I highly doubt there are other athletes who train on Christmas Day etc. he trains all day every single day. That’s insane. Even passionate people burn out mentally and gifted people burn out physically. The guy doesn’t transfer because he’s clearly obsessed. He is also making a ton of money doing what he does. He doesn’t need MMA for money or fame. I am just like a lot of others who would like to see him take his work ethic and expand it to MMA because I’d love to see him fight. You say “easy” as if it’s not for some people. Some people are just freak athletes. Or mathematicians, musicians etc. he is obviously an elite talent who combines it with hard work. MMA is easy for John jones. He’s been dominating guys since he was barely old enough to drink and doing it with half ass training camps, partying and doing coke up till the fight and he would still dominate #1 contenders after another who is putting in everything they have to take him out. Francis nganneau is a freak elite athlete. Hasn’t been doing MMA for very long and won the championship, then he goes on to almost beat Tyson fury in his first ever boxing match. These things come easy to him right? Wouldn’t you like to see what Ryan was capable of? His stand up just had to be good enough to keep him safe till he can bring it to the ground and then nobody stands a chance

As far as Gordon Ryan goes.. one thing he does that I think is admirable regardless of winning or losing, is how careful he is not to yank when pulling someone into submission. Like he slowly and controlled starts the sub, while some guys just hammers their whole body down on a limb to get the tap before the opponent gets what´s happening.

Ryan, in addition to incredible technical jiu jitsu has absolutely amazing energy management. He's so good at finding moments where the opponent is spending so much energy struggling, and Gordon is able to be heavy and just take a little break himself.
    Edit:
Gordon's game is like a pressure cooker. Slowly heats up, applies massive pressure, then bit by bit, tenderizes his opponents. It's fun to watch, since it's not insanely dynamic that you can't tell what is happening. You feel like you can put the same movements into practice yourself (yes, I'm aware that I absolutely, 100% can't). Then you got Nicky Rod, or the Ruotolos who are just flying everywhere and as an older beginner, I'm like dafuq just happened, idk, but it was cool, and there's no way I'll ever be able to do that shit!

That thing about "go first" will get you in a LOT of trouble with Gordon. Notice that when Patrick "goes", he ended up on his back. If you watch, Gordon realizes the benefit of putting on a good show. He could finish almost every fight very quickly, but he chooses to give his opponent every opportunity while using them to practice his skills. Then, when he is ready, and after putting on a good show, he finishes it. He really is on another level than most anyone who come against him. It's a different game than the UFC type fights.
