I made some stackable mountain terrain for tabletop gaming, but the best part is that it's not limited to just using it as a mountain. Sure you can use it for vertical climbing scenarios, but the pieces can also be rearranged to create valleys, or walls, or hills! So good!
Great for Dungeons & Dragons or Frostgrave :D

You might want to grab some of the thicker gloss polyeurethane and add some globs along the underside of overhangs and let gravity work a bit to create some ice effects for the mountains. Mix in some other techniques for icicles and similar.
I've been thinking of a similar project for a while, though using the cheap foam core and many more layers per to try for a more striation filled rock...I've made a couple smaller things that way for rock work during the lockdowns, and while it takes longer to make, the end results are something that really shows in the end.
Now to add some additional features, ladders, mining carts, ropes etc for traversing. Maybe an unfortunate victim of the cliffs...

It’s honestly a background that adds so much to what he does. I’ve found that I really value his product recommendations especially those not specifically produced for the hobby. I’ve never walked through the hardware store the same since I started watching his channel. :) My very handy wife explained this week that she needed to pick up a few items before heading to a friend’s to help repair some small holes in their wall. She seemed baffled when I was able to raid my crafting shelf and provide her with two spackle options and scrapers. :p
Just in case Jeremy reads this as it’s a fresh video, I was wondering if you had any outdoor sealant ideas - perhaps from your building background. I’d love to make decor for our garden (fairy houses, XPS-based Halloween decorations…) but I’m not sure if there are any ‘best practices/products’ for weather-proofing. I figure a Winnipeg-based builder might have some ideas on how a fellow Canuck can bring all this creative craftiness outside. Many thanks!

@@AVspectre PVA glue/modpodge makes a very tough finish, covering that with a non-yellowing clear would make it pretty weatherproof.
also try EPS not XPS, its less expensive and doesn't use CFC's to be manufactured. XPS is 14,000x worse for the environment than EPS.
I love the natural tones that oil washes tend to introduce into terrain - they work like a mixture of a recess wash and a glaze and a filter, changing something like xps foam painted with craft paint into something way more complex, interesting, and realistic than the sum of its parts. Well done!
At first when he applied them, my first thought was "Oh no..." but being a fan of the channel I knew it'd work out in the end. However, I was still shocked to see how amazingly well those oil washes worked. They just ended up being so perfectly natural and fitting. I ended up just admiring the technique, that at first just looked like horrible project ruining blobs into something that completely changes all of the detail so effortlessly...
This reminds me of old school Black Magic Craft! I love your new videos, but your old stuff is what got me into making terrain. You rock! I cant wait to see what's coming next week!

You could even connect some easy bridges between the platforms and set up some easy scatter like tents and barrels for a quick marauders camp! Or even make some easy Ropes to climb up the wall !
Loved that build. I have just gone recently into Frostgrave and really got into a Winter Terrain Mood for sure. Hope you make more builds like that and expand on it!!

I had a sculpture project in college where we were gluing multiple sheets of foam together to carve, we used wood glue. Doesn’t expand, doesn’t melt, holds together strongly through intense cutting/carving.

Of all of the foam terrain I have built, straight wood glue has never failed me. And, it can be stored longer than caulking (in my experience). Nice finishing work, I will have to loving rip that technique off.
wood glue is just extra-strong PVA. both can take a while to cure between 2 sheets of foam, so I'f im doing big sheets I use low-temp hot glue for speed.
These cliffs could definitely use some accompanying snow-covered terrain pieces. Log cabins to sit alone, or wood/stone buildings to create a mountain-top, alpine, or tundra/arctic community. Wooden bridges to span gaps. Snowed-in camps, with tents and fire pits (and maybe a random corpse being overtaken by the snow or stuck in ice).
You can also build Sci Fi buildings, similarly covered in snow, for games set on arctic research stations (think John Carpenter's The Thing) or Hoth-style ice planets.

I like how you can use this in multiple scenarios arranged in multiple different ways. I'm somewhat space-constrained, so modular and multipurpose is good.

Awesome build. For those big tubes of adhesive put a large nail in the end. It seals the tube and then its easy to pull out and keep using instead of having to keep cutting the tube shorter and shorter.

Love this (as always!!)!! if you will indulge me: I created a set of modular mountains too. Imagine a circlular mountain (with steppes etc..) then cut into quarters. The quarters can be set into a circular mountain, 1/2 a side of one mountain, two 1/2 sides of a mountain (creating a valley) or each of the quarters placed on the corner of the table creating a bowl, crater or caldera
so glad to see painting again! :D those turned out awesome. Now we just need the return of complex structures as that is what made this channel. Magic.

As soon as you said you didn't have wieghts my first thought was books, what a true nerd uses to weigh things down. Glad you didn't disappoint!
That came out really good! You could even do a sort of 'evolving battlefield' concept with that. Where you take out the bottom piece and put it on top as the players ascend (or vice versa when descending) to simulate traveling further vertically.

The first time I saw that mix of caulking, pva, sand, etc. was on an old youtube channel called "The Kamloopian." He called it "Kamloopian Goop" and it is as good a name as any. Maybe better than most.

Another good build vid. I do like at the end you showed the layouts. That is very cool! I was thinking you could add fire/lava effects instead of ice/snow. Here is a quick tip for glue: use 3M spray adhesive. It's rubber cement in a can. Just spray both pieces of foam and stick together. The bond is instant. Just mask off with tape the parts you don't want any spray to get on. Try with with some small parts as a test. I have used it for over 2 decades.
I was considering this, but as spray paint propellant melts foam, does the spray glue as well? I know you can shoot paint from far enough away to avoid that, just wondering about the glue. I think I have a can of super 77 somewhere.
@@Born_Stellar Yeah just don't soak it and spray from a distance. I always hit both sides with a couple light coats and then press together. Bond is instant too.

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial I feel compelled to yell you I built your fountain as a first time foam build, and I have a bunch of hot wire cutters and a table and a whole pile of foam coming in the mail soon. I have a foam "stone" block and cereal box shingle roof house I made that's primed and ready to paint. I never thought I'd get into terrain building but I've been watching your videos like crack and now I'm making my own! Thank you!! Now I have to balance building what seems fun, and building for what's actually needed in the next adventure lol!
I have always loved using rocks for the texture
You know, I really expected that red oil wash to turn out too strong. Turns out, I was wrong and it adds this really nice and subtle bit of color to the piece. I really need to do more with oils, they are awesome.
Also, I think this is a project that really should go into my "Do Something Like This" folder.
All those sweet minis just given'er up that mountain side!

Great to see your take on the Cliffside Climb. I didn't think about beating the tar out of mine to actually crack the foam, but I did cover mine in snow flocking that would have covered up the detail.
This I believe is one of my FAVORITE pieces of terrain you've made to date!!!! All your work is great but idk the blue on this made the snow flocking and the article features on the INCREDIBLY bad ass miniatures... Just ABSOLUTELY pop. And AS always, you made the terrain modular which is fantastic

A great video! By the way: There are old stories, that Alexander the great found a blue mountain in Afghanistan, consisting of Lapis lazuli. It vanished fast, some say. Some doubt, that it existed ... Well, at least this mountain is an excuse for blue mountains on a table and you don't need to stick to brown and grey ones.
The blue tones look great. Have you ever used sand-less tile grout for added strength and texturing?

I'd love to see a Volcanic area that could add to this. Bubbling Lava, Splashes, and Stepping Stones, Lava Mephits, sunken statues perhaps.

I've been really enjoying all the cyber punk content but this was such a useful and relatable video. I swear "I don't feel like getting gunk on my hands" is one of my main Achille's crafting heels.
Beautiful in its simplicity; I would consider making them ~9" in length to match the scale of my dungeon tiles and allow smaller mountains, maybe a couple 45-deg corners. It seems to me that if you start with some 9x9 and stagger your cuts by 1/2", they can be assembled in stacks of 3 of similar depths and result in 4 different depth steps:
The cuts I'm thinking on 6 different 9x9" are: [1, 1.5, 2], [3, 3.5, 4] (which results in complementary cuts of [8, 7.5, 7], [6, 5.5, 5]) Basically mountain-sized dungeon stackers.
Now to figure out how to make some leeetle ladders. ;D

Im actually making a giant diorama/wargaming board with modular cliffs. Not exactly the same thing, but damn it I wish I saw this before I started. I wouldnt use the exact method, but a mix of both would’ve helped a lot.

When you make the hard coat you have to make the squishy noise otherwise it doesn't stick properly.
I still remember how in one of your earlier videos you've been talking about not needing to craft *everything* you wish to reflect on the gaming table; that a combination of theater of the mind & few pieces of terrain work the best. These mountain pieces are a perfect example of that philosophy - you don't have to craft a whole 🏔 mountain range to create a great scene (many scenes!)
Love how it all builds especially into a narrow valley at the end of the video, just so atmospheric and ready to tell a story.
