Other materials for diffusing light white plastic bags, paper bags, printer paper, white craft paper, white EVA foam, and polystyrene packaging. I will qualify this post with the fact I was Friends with Richard Tucholka. Way way back in 1982 Tri Tax Games published a game called Fringwothy, which was about a gate portal found in Antarctica about 150 miles from MicMurdo Air force Base. That portal was found to be a pathway to other plants and alternative earths. Richard passed away in 2016, but Tri Tac Games goes on with most of the catalog available at RPG Drive Thru. I am very shocked that more table top gamers do not know about this. And if you ever see the animated short "Babylon Park" , while it also mostly based on Stargate there are a number of Fringworthy Reference in it, even the statement of IDET, which is the gate using origination in the Fringworthy

Stargate is definitely the best sequel to Twin Peaks. It was particularly nice when they mucked with time travel and Farscape got rebooted into the franchise.
I was avoiding the show(s) for a very long time because they looked cheap and forced at first glance. Then my friend got me to actually watch the first few episodes in order and it became my favorite show ever (well, tied with Friends for the 1st place ;)). I even liked Universe!
I had literally just failed at making something exactly like this, so having a far more experienced person walk me through the second attempt of my project was amazing timing!
Tip for runes and such, klingon is a good alphabet to crib from and you can hide words or phrases. I printed a figure i didn't realize was a rip off of a GW sculpt so when i painted it i painted an apology to GW for printing it on a large trailing scroll she had. Just for if you're feeling less inspired and need some runes/etc.

This is amazing. I have been printing jaffa and stargate soldiers to use in stargrave and have been needing a good stargate for it! This is perfect! So far up my ally its coming out my mouth. XD
There’s a thing you can use that has been used for cosplay props when using LED’s. LED Eva foam. You can still see the color and it hides the dots from the led strips if it not right on it
Or fiberfill, the artificial "down" used in pillows. It's in pretty much any craft store and you can pack it in as tightly or loosely as you like to get the effect you want. It's especially good when there's not a lot of clearance.
Dude SG1 is on Netflix, come back next week and thank us - the show is great - not so much for the other two spin-off shows Atlantis(but it was Jason Mamoa's first main character role since Baywatch) and Stargate Universe was terrible lol

Also, yet another recommendation for SG-1 here, the movie was fun but the series fleshes out the universe in a way the movie could not. Do have in mind the first few episodes are rather more NSFW than the rest.
Great build, but I think you totally missed an opportunity for an infinity mirror! Dark portal when players approach, then when the puzzle is unlocked, the lights 'activate', and a view into the other dimension is seen. (Unfortunately it also releases the undead horde...) Yes, I know, it's not the watery event horizon from the OG movie and series, but it could be very cool especially if the LEDs were diffused inside the ring to produce a more even glow.

Great build! Suggestion ... to hide the LEDs, try using some vellum paper or Wax paper to help diffuse them. Another way (rather tedious, but it works) is to use either a black dry erase marker or a black sharpie marker to coat each LED/Light. IF the light is glass, use a sharpie. if it is plastic use dry erase. The marker won't completely coat the glass/plastic but it will help to diffuse the light coming from them. Hope this helps! I've been looking at more and more oil washes for my videos recently. I make my own water washes using your technique and it is fantastic, but really doesn't hit as well as those gorgeous oils do.

Jaffa Kree to the max! the absolute best part of rewatching the movie is French Stewart bullying James Spader. Mind Blowing. I can't see FS as anyone but his Third Rock character, then to see him as a soldier and a bullying/tough guy: totally nuts! the TV show is great fun. It looks amazing! When you were fussing with trying to hide the battery holder, at one point I was thinking, how amazing would a build be with some big eldritch type creature lurking in the middle of the gate! It would be out of focus, so the paint job could be really quick and basic, and it would definitely add to the feeling of mystery and potential terror! (obviously, uh...it wouldn't be usable for all games then, lol). And your use of mixed mediums continues to astound me. That gel paint, the light gels, the oil washes, the air brush. Amazing stuff!! Very inspirational as always. :)

Nice! I run a D&D 5e Stargate campaign and this looks great! I use a 3d printed Stargate that looks like one from the movie/shows but this looks awesome and maybe I'll do this someday to represent an ancient prototype Stargate. I also can't believe you didn't watch Stargate SG-1 as a kid. You would have loved it!
Absolutely awesome build - You could do a totally different finish on the back side so the players have an entrance / exit side. Swamp/Taveren/Dungeon basement. A 2 for 1!

I like Stargate SG-1 a lot. I think it’s the true successor to Star Trek TOS - Planet of the Week Action/Adventure. Great inspiration for RPGs and skirmish games.
Huge fan of Stargate SG-1. It still holds up after all these years. The show ran for 214 episodes couple of movies and spinoffs. When I saw you were creating a Stargate I had to watch. Nice work!
That turned out pretty great! In the future, if you want to create a diffusion effect on clear smooth plastic, I suggest looking for Folk Art’s “etched glass” paint to experiment with. It adds a frosted layer that might help with the LED “glow”.

Great video and I live how the stonework came out. So much so I'm almost tempted to try oil washes despite my thoughts of how it will react to my resin pours...still, only one way to know for sure. :) As for the theme.. I'm still geeking. I loved the movie and the series. I still consider SG1 an amazingly tbought out show over the 10+ seasons. Thanks for the memories.
Would love to play some warcry on a board with this epic terrain!! Thematic terrain is always just so inspiring, and egyptian has to be right up there with like vampires, and Greeks/Roman or Aztec!
Really cool build and definitely a great centerpiece for the desert walls. The models also looks really slick all done up~ Maybe someday when travel is possible you can drag Wyloch up for a game of Grimdark Future or Age of Fantasy to use some of this slick terrain, XD.

PSA: "Spycraft 1e RPG" doubles as the "Stargate RPG" base system, its a relatively inexpensive buy in. There's about 20 something books in the line, you don't need them all. However Stargate has a small book line of it's own, which are bit more pricey... Not sure if there's another licensed Stargate RPG available in hard copies.
I love stargate. I love the show more than the movie, the shows are the best feelgood-sci-fi shows that's ever been made. I miss Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis so much. The casts were just the best. Hardly anywhere to be streamed, which sucks...
What you needed for this was some diffusion material behind the lighting gel. You can get some for free if you have access to an old TV/Monitor you were going to throw away or from a junkyard. You can just unscrew the screen and find a sheet of it that would have been used by the backlight. I'm sure you can probably buy something similar too.

Did you know you can get circular quilting rulers? They're clear and come in different diameters.... might be useful in various kinds of builds.

I like Stargate SG-1 a lot. I think it’s the true successor to Star Trek TOS - Planet of the Week Action/Adventure. Great inspiration for RPGs and skirmish games.
Huge fan of Stargate SG-1. It still holds up after all these years. The show ran for 214 episodes couple of movies and spinoffs. When I saw you were creating a Stargate I had to watch. Nice work!
That turned out pretty great! In the future, if you want to create a diffusion effect on clear smooth plastic, I suggest looking for Folk Art’s “etched glass” paint to experiment with. It adds a frosted layer that might help with the LED “glow”.
Sweet build, Jeremy. If you're looking for some clear paints, Reaper Miniatures has an awesome clear phthalo blue and green that you can get, I bought them and they're awesome for doing clear figures with.
Great video and I live how the stonework came out. So much so I'm almost tempted to try oil washes despite my thoughts of how it will react to my resin pours...still, only one way to know for sure. :)
As for the theme.. I'm still geeking. I loved the movie and the series. I still consider SG1 an amazingly tbought out show over the 10+ seasons.

Would love to play some warcry on a board with this epic terrain!! Thematic terrain is always just so inspiring, and egyptian has to be right up there with like vampires, and Greeks/Roman or Aztec!
Really cool build and definitely a great centerpiece for the desert walls. The models also looks really slick all done up~
Maybe someday when travel is possible you can drag Wyloch up for a game of Grimdark Future or Age of Fantasy to use some of this slick terrain, XD.
check out the series too, the first episode picks up shortly after Daniel Jackson stays on Abbidos. Love the build, not far from where I live some folks built a full size replica of the Stargate. It's in Ashland, Ohio. I know that would be a helluva drive, but it really is awesome to see.

PSA: "Spycraft 1e RPG" doubles as the "Stargate RPG" base system, its a relatively inexpensive buy in. There's about 20 something books in the line, you don't need them all. However Stargate has a small book line of it's own, which are bit more pricey... Not sure if there's another licensed Stargate RPG available in hard copies.
I love stargate. I love the show more than the movie, the shows are the best feelgood-sci-fi shows that's ever been made. I miss Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis so much. The casts were just the best. Hardly anywhere to be streamed, which sucks...
What you needed for this was some diffusion material behind the lighting gel. You can get some for free if you have access to an old TV/Monitor you were going to throw away or from a junkyard. You can just unscrew the screen and find a sheet of it that would have been used by the backlight. I'm sure you can probably buy something similar too.
