The Transportation Security Administration says passenger checkpoints are making flights safer, but a security adviser says those measures are "security theater." Lesley Stahl reports.
I don't like being molested by TSA. I was in line to board the aircraft. A TSA officer came out and gave me a really invasive pat down in front of everyone. I had no choice to go to the scanner. She pulled on some private areas of my body and there was no reason. I had already been through security and customs so I had been checked over quite thorough. I was also 54 years old and Hispanic/Latina
what is the best way to pack items such as jewelry, watches n laptop in carry on will they take it off and keep it with them sometimes? one of my friends bought watches and they just took those and didnt give
When you get to the airport 3 hours early and TSA causes you to miss your plane, what are you sappose to believe. Are they worthless or what? So it’s your first time on an airplane. You have no idea where to go what to do. Hell ya your nervous, your sweating, probably the look of fear on your face. My plan is no luggage, just me and the clothes on my back. And ID, ticket, and credit card. When I land I go to K-Mart shopping when I land. When I return, it’s all getting donated to the homeless.
Excellent thought. When my children are a little older, we won't pack a bunch of crap either... well just hit good old Wal-Mart when we get there... no extra pants for the toddler - extra shirt for my school age... just a small purse with only essentials... brilliant.
so if there are two in the air and they know , why are they on the plane? I don’t agree with the hands in the crotch or breast. You are violating a persons body. Do you feel up feel up TSA employees when they come to work?
However, they need to check the luggage better, one time me and a friend was in Singapore, and there was this lizard. Somehow it went into our bag and passed through Singaporean security, and TSA when we came back to the states
Maybe it is because I only fly a handful of times a year but I support what TSA does. If something was to happen tomorrow and there were no security measures in place people would be mad, but yet people are mad now when they have to take off their shoes, take out their laptops etc. Another thing thing to remember all the TSA agents are just doing their jobs.. and they probably get treated pretty bad throughout the day. They are just American citizens trying to earn a living and support their families. I always make sure that I arrive at the airport with A LOT of time to spare so I am not rushed, I treat everyone with respect, use my manners and smile and If and when I am pulled aside for additional screening I comply as TSA is only doing their job and their job is keeping you and your family safe and in my mind thats pretty important stuff.
Sara Schoening you realize they haven't even found fake bombs right? Just because of that falsehood you believe in I didn't read the rest of your comment
I went through the scanner with my arms up and after stepping through without issue some TSA agent came up to me when my head was turned and put her hands on me to pat me down without saying a word to me! I was startled as I did not see her approach! Then I was furious! If you are going to put hands on someone you need to speak to them first!
I don't about anyone else, but I ALWAYS get nervous and anxious at airport security because I'm always afriad that I'm going to be touched and groped. So how do they detect the difference. Being nervous and anxious is one emotion and emotions do not have varieties of them! TSA is bullshit!
You mean when TSA agents weren't snooping around in checked bags, the agency puts 9-year-olds on the watch list, and peanut butter somehow becomes a liquid... yeah, we are definitively smarter now /sarcasm intended
11:08-11:20 They also take away hammers, screwdrivers, padlocks, trailer hitches, snowglobes, and much more. And then what happens when they start taking away house keys, credit cards, ID cards, library cards newspapers, food trays, belts, coins, CDs, tapes, tape players, walkmans, CD players, rings, wrist watches, cameras, and even books? What happens when the only thing you can bring in checked or carryon baggage is laundry? The TSA just makes our airports like supermax prisons.
@jake23211 With all due respect, the only thing you - or anybody else for that matter - has to go on is images released by the TSA that are not full size/resolution, often pixelated and often had their brightness/contrast messed with, among other things.
Bah, I recall twice going through TSA security when I accidentally left my Gerbers that had an incredibly sharp 3 inch knife on it and they let me through.
@Capirussa After going through security in 4 airports, I found out that is VERY unlikely to get a pat down. In my whole group of 20 people, none of us got patted down. We just went through x-rays. People only document the bad things, when the bad things don;t happen very often
Those scanners would probably save more lives if they were in a hospital rather than an airport. Apparently i also heard they're screening the pilots aswell? Its not like they even need a bomb to bring down the plane! "Those who sacrifice freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both" - Benjamin Franklin I can see the benefits and drawbacks. Security is needed. I just think there are more efficient / less intrusive ways of doing it. America - Sort it out!
what you people dont realize is on the xray things show up certain colors- food, liquids, books, etc show up the same color as other items that are not allowed
In addition to being molested at the check point, we have to pay 35 million for their anger management training. Yeah, everyone's anxious because they fear the check points. You think a real terrorist would fear the check point if they were going to blow themselves up? Ridiculous!
I don't think that these behavioral specialists can tell the difference between a person who is anxious or stressed out by travel from a person who is anxious for other reasons - neither do any of the psychiatrists or psychologists I have asked about this.
Body scanners and such aside..I always make my flying as painless as possible for myself. I check my bags in. I only go through the security, with maybe an book or magazine. And I get there extra early. People get stressed because they show up with 15 suitcases 5 minutes before their flight leaves. The security sucks and 99% is pointless. But good planning on your part reduces personal stress.
No one is forcing you to fly; if you don't like the rules, don't take a plane. Oh, wait, that's right, the airlines provide an INSANELY valuable service that allows you to travel across the world in mere hours. They have the right to enforce their own rules they way they see fit, just as you have the right not to fly. You can buy your own plane and not screen anyone who gets on, but then again, if you had invested billions, you'd probably cover your ass too...
(Part 1)I have been reading about the TSA and what they do because I am going to fly for the first time in July. I have seen most of these videos and I just say "Let them pat me down, I don't care" Because really, I don't. If they do pat me down I am going to ask politely for them to tell me everything they will be doing before they do it(Even though they are supposed too without being asked). I'm 15 and yes my parents taught me no one is supposed to touch me in my private areas, but I would
I'm sorry...did he say they are not capable of storing images such as full body scans? It's a computer with a hard drive like damn near all devices these days. Therefore, intentionally or not, he straight up lied. Even printers have hard drives that store data from printed and scanned documents which pose security and identity risks for those who dispose of them improperly. I really question how in depth this 60 Minutes investigation went. Especially if they couldn't recognize that lie.
They’ve accomplished nothing but mass trauma. I do feel bad for the position the TSA employees are in and definitely passengers. It’s undignified and inhumane. And we aren’t any safer.
I stumbled upon this while looking for something else. It's interesting that most everything said in 2008 is still pertinent in 2018. They (TSA or Thousands Standing Around) have spent Billions, yes BILLIONS of our tax dollars, on a totally worthless effort. Kindly show me ONE, ONE instance of the TSA preventing a hijacking, a bombing or anything similar since their inception. This unit simply provides employment for thousands of previously unemployed buffoons. What a waste!
Well there is no threat of terrorism when you have the TSA active because they thoroughly check you. That's the whole point of the TSA. If we got rid of TSA, it would be easier to smuggle drugs, explosives etc.
3 of the most secure building in the world fell at free-fall speed on 9/11/01. That could only occur by controlled demolition. Controlled demolition could only be accomplished if it were an inside job. Research building number 7. It was a 3rd building that fell that day. It was not hit by a plane, and yet it fell all the way down to the ground, symmetrically, at free-fall speed, in to its own footprint. 911 was an inside job! TSA is serfdom training. America is now the land of the fearful slave.
Tsa- If you have a bluetooth speaker, put it in this tray. Me- Heres my buds+ earbuds. Tsa- Sir, I said bluetooth speakers... Me- maam those are bluetooth. Tsa- Those are not a bluetooth speaker, they are earphones..... Me- Maam, what produces the sound in the headphones? Tsa- those are not a bluetooth speaker....... FACE PALM
I work as a TSO at Regan National Airport. As a senator, Obama would regularly come through the check points as do most other congress men and senators. All are subject to the same screening processes as everyone else right down to the liquid ban. Rarely do any complain, and they helped create TSA. They provide our funding, and they ultimately have the final say in our existance. In this politically "do as i say not as i do" society they follow the rules better than most passengers.
I'm a soldier that travels in uniform and I get searched every time. I have had military awards that I have carried in my bags seen as weapons. I also deal with force and personal security in Iraq and I will tell you that your security measures are not effective and you focus on the wrong things.
What is the education requirements for TSA officers? If you have uneducated staff running an operation then you need to lay down very precise rules and have the staff follow them to the word. That is fine if you are guarding a barn but when it comes to screening people the complexities are not the same.
@KiDFRANKKK "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety" Benjiman Franklin February 17, 1775
I was going thru security and this beautiful woman ahead of me had a hunting knife, they caught it and took it away from her, she was angry, I was like, fuck you idiot NO KNIVES thank you security check. Biggest threat is checked in baggage that doesn't get checked at all in some cases.
here is a question i want you yo ask the tsa what if there were no more terrorists or if osama was cought or if the attacks declined. would there rediculus sucurity breeches be removed or atleast eased down a bit. i am saying this because i don't want to know that a man that lost a leg has to suffer more at an airport by having his pants pulled down. but if none of this happends the tsa should at least train their workers more stricly like how a pilot would be traind.
Kip Hawley (outgoing head of TSA) said, "They got on the planes in September 11, 2001.. killed 3000 people. They will do it again, as many times as they can. .. the public doesn't realize.." How would terrorists go about doing this Hawley? What are you suggesting they could even get through a metal detector that allows taking control of an aircraft to fly into a building? Hint: Blowing it up does not allow flying into a building.
In the past 9 years of its existence, the TSA hasn’t caught any terrorists. Their stated goal is “to prevent any terrorist or criminal activity”. But, in its weekly publication of airport incidents, it has never reported an explicit attempted act of terrorism!
A Suggested alternative. You go through an explosives detector Plus you still screen for guns with a simple metal detector. Then each middle seat back has a loaded 9mm semiautomatic pistol in a locked box. (similar to the way air phones are stored). The gun is released with a special magnetic card given to passengers that have passed a background check and have taken training and demonstrated competency with the 9mm pistol. Why wouldn't this work and preserve our rights at the same time?
Well that is brilliant. I notice that even today you can take a screwdriver onto a plane as carryon, as long as it is 7 inches or less. In the hands of someone trained in combat that would be more dangerous then box cutters even. How the TSA can figure a pool cue is more dangerous then a 7 inch long screw driver in the tight confines of the ailes of a plane.... This is the problem, the people in charge truly have little in the way of common sense or logic.
I am in training to be an airline pilot. So ehhh...yea it looks bad, but I'm willing to give up some rights in the airport, AS LONG as the government doesnt take it any further, etc. If you know what I mean. Just because this happens in airports, doesnt mean I'll just let police search me on the street. Does that make sense?
I really don't care what uniform they wear because that's not the underlying problem. The TSA need to be far more customer friendly and conduct themselves in a courteous and friendly manner at all times. They spent millions of taxpayer dollars on training but evidently neglected to include words like Thank you and please as part of their orientation. Courtesy goes a long way and they need to learn that.
Around 120 US citizens (including soldiers in the line of fire) have died in terrorist attacks since 2001. In 2006 alone, roughly 425,000 US citizens died of coronary heart disease.
Some of the things are ridiculous, but I have to agree. These people are yelled at by travelers for doing their job. It's no wonder why they are always in a bad mood. Also, it seems like they have kept terrorists off of planes, so its working.
There is consent on your ticket/reciept to security searches....and it is implied that you and your property is to be searched if needed at the checkpoint. It isn't the flying public's or TSA fault for all the rules, you can thank terrorists. If you don't like being searched, then don't fly.... take a bus, car or buy your own jet.
I don't know who's responsible for checking ID but they are not doing it right at some places . Two times I flew to FL with my daughter ( 1 year old) nobody even bothers to ask me for her identification to make sure she's mine or a parent consent letter if she wasn't . I could have kidnap a child and they won't even know. This is scary and need to be enforce
@tomofnorthcal It is a big show, TSA... They are screening 90 year olds more because they may have a pacemaker setting the machines off... If they were serious about this, they would train them like they do in Israel, and watch they way passengers act and their mannerisms, "did I spell that correct' ? lol
@JESSESEIBEL I ´m from Buenos Aires ( Argentina ). We had our share of problems too, cruel military goverments in the 70s, war ( against the UK, for the Malvinas/Falklands ) in the 80s, even suffered 2 terrible terrorist acts in the 90s...this country is far from been perfect But still I´m grateful for living here and having the freedoms it seems you are starting to loose.
But if the old lady dies for having too much stress at the checkpoint, the TSA can't touch her nor the airport personal because of liability issues ^.^
If you work for TSA it should be a requirement to know constitutional law
no one should work for the tsa cause they do nothing at fucking all
"It's a war..." on the American public.
The screening isn't the problem.......just the stupidity, rudeness and discourteousness. Love the phrase "security theater".....so true.
Yea nothing worse than stupid, rude, and discourteous passengers.
X-ray machines WTF . This is a microwave for your whole body . Safe for who?
I don't like being molested by TSA. I was in line to board the aircraft. A TSA officer came out and gave me a really invasive pat down in front of everyone. I had no choice to go to the scanner. She pulled on some private areas of my body and there was no reason. I had already been through security and customs so I had been checked over quite thorough. Stupid woman likely enjoyed it.
what is the best way to pack items such as jewelry, watches n laptop in carry on will they take it off and keep it with them sometimes? one of my friends bought watches and they just took those and didnt give
Never forget? TSA stealing my laptop is really admirable
So the head of the TSA hasn't read the government report on the TSA...
Below his pay grade.
Respect goes both ways.
Treat flyers like crap and what do you expect.
It's honestly the chicken or the egg with this one.
When you get to the airport 3 hours early and TSA causes you to miss your plane, what are you sappose to believe. Are they worthless or what? So it’s your first time on an airplane. They find no luggage suspicious, though. :/
No way to win.
who screens the TSA? do they screen each other?
Someone got rich providing all this "security", lobbying in all its glory!
nervousness and anxiety??? everyone going through their Nazis checkpoints is nervous..
ROFL
"Nice and courtious?" TSA? BWAAAA HAAAAAA HAAAAA HAAAAA HAAAAA, now thats funny.
so if there are two in the air and they know , why are they on the plane? I don’t agree with the hands in the crotch or breast. You are violating a persons body. Do you feel up feel up TSA employees when they come to work?
When you enter an airport, you are consenting to search and seizures. While consenting to govt policy
Pat down tsa agents
Mate, if the TSA didn’t do that, someone would try to smuggle in a small bomb, drugs or a gun through there....
However, they need to check the luggage better, one time me and a friend was in Singapore, and there was this lizard. Somehow it went into our bag and passed through Singaporean security, and TSA when we came back to the states
No - they do not comply with same screening that passengers are subjected to.
Maybe it is because I only fly a handful of times a year but I support what TSA does. My question is; if the images captured in the scanner are not saved, why do they keep showing up on the Internet?
I went through the scanner with my arms up and after stepping through without issue some TSA agent came up to me when my head was turned and put her hands on me to pat me down without saying a word to me! I was startled as I did not see her approach! Then I was furious! If you are going to put hands on someone you need to speak to them first!
@Iyenifara what do u mean by a "free power trip"?
I don't about anyone else, but I ALWAYS get nervous and anxious at airport security because I'm always afriad that I'm going to be touched and groped. So how do they detect the difference. Being nervous and anxious is one emotion and emotions do not have varieties of them! TSA is bullshit!
@christickles
Thank you, I have been searching for a good way to express this point. Mind if I steal it?
911 was a plot to control the people, 911 was a government job
Am I the only one who remembers that 86 year old man who had C-4 taped to his wheelchair that tooked down a Korean plane? Maybe so?
You mean when TSA agents weren't snooping around in checked bags, the agency puts 9-year-olds on the watch list, and peanut butter somehow becomes a liquid... yeah, we are definitively smarter now /sarcasm intended
11:08-11:20 They also take away hammers, screwdrivers, padlocks, trailer hitches, snowglobes, and much more. The BED INTRUDER TECHNO REMIX here
LMFAO! yea, poor screeners.
do children have to go through the screening too?
Can you say cranking up the oppressometer (Freedom----, Security+, HeavyFootOfGovernment+)?
I have a hip replacement so I always have to go through the body scanner.
@jake23211
With all due respect, the only thing you - or anybody else for that matter - has to go on is images released by the TSA that are not full size/resolution, often pixelated and often had their brightness/contrast messed with, among other things.
Bah, I recall twice going through TSA security when I accidentally left my Gerbers that had an incredibly sharp 3 inch knife on it and they let me through.
THIS IS JUST, an invasion of privacy...
This video is 2 years old. The dark day of Nov. 1, 2010 has yet to happen.
That’s why I got Global Entry 💁🏾♀️💁🏾♀️💁🏾♀️
How you go stop that

Alright fuck it I'm going by greyhound.
I will never fly again!!
I bet that TSA guy was a hall-pass Monitor in High School.
In addition to being molested at the check point, we have to pay 35 million for their anger management training. Yeah, everyone's anxious because they fear the check points. You think a real terrorist would fear the check point if they were going to blow themselves up? Ridiculous!

In 2006 alone, roughly 425,000 US citizens died of coronary heart disease.
@intheredzone72 Not at My Lai. Those dangerous babies were mowed down along with their pinko mothers, siblings, oxen, and everything that could move.
Some of the things are ridiculous, but I have to agree. These people are yelled at by travelers for doing their job. It's no wonder why they are always in a bad mood. Also, it seems like they have kept terrorists off of planes, so its working.
Wtf? Did that women they showed in her underwear consent to being shown on national TV in such a state? Shit's messed up
"Annoying"!? Arbitrary!? How about against the fucking law!
This is scary and need to be enforce
no scanners!!
There's something seriously wrong with this world.........
Now Bruce makes sense...6:18
YOUR FEE PAYS FOR TSA
@emptyslicepeace lol, silly, there are US Marshalls with guns, and a gun in a safe in the cockpit.
THEY LIIIIIIIIIIIIIVEEEE
GOOD JOB TSA!! Thanks for all you do!!
(like put up with a bunch of whiners and complainers)
