I remember being quite depressed turning 19. I grew up seeing medias that depict like 18 is the peak and after that it's over lol. Turning 21 during the pandemic peak was not helping either...i've dreaded/become indifferent about bdays ever since. Lately i kind of started not to care about aging though, I guess it's all slowly sinking in that it's really a normal human experience😂
I'm not your mom but I am definitely tearing up when you had your 'candle moment'. Thanks for raising the flag for us fellow people who love spending time alone and enjoy their own time more than anything else! I would either get nothing at all, or be "given" an agenda that I don't particularly enjoy myself/that only they do. It wasn't as fancy as your hotel, but it was lovely to sit in the sun, by the sea. I too spent my birthday alone but it was perfect. If we don't have people around us who will treat us as special, we have to do that for ourselves. Your videos bring me such joy. I especially love the Moldova wedding video and watching all of your grandmother's wonderful cooking, what a blessing it is to have her in your life. Throughout most of my teen & young adult life, I would watch other people (including some of my friends) get thrown birthday parties and surprises by their friends. I’ve always wondered why I never really got to experience that. When you said “I am my closest friend” I really felt that. ❤️
I have also kind of "lost hope" for my birthday. I loved celebrating with my family, but since moving away it's so different. No one is there to plan and do things that I would want to do. It's been 6 years since I moved away and haven't celebrated my birthday like I used to. Your video inspired me to want to do it for myself, book an airbnb or treat myself to a fancy dinner. DUDE. This looked /absolutely amazing/. I'm just like you, I always wanted people to really give a crap about my birthday, and no one ever has. Either people didn't really care and never said anything, or they made it all about what they wanted. I also share my birthday with my mom, so she tends to overshadow my own wants and needs on this day. I have hated my birthday every year because all it felt was like a song and dance for everyone else, not celebrating ME. But you're totally right, you shouldn't, and can't, rely on others to make your birthday special for YOU. You gotta do it yourself! From now on, this is what I'm going to do, too. I am so sick of idiots grouping age by decade. 20-29 is NOT an age group, nor is 30-39. Typically it's split up like 18-24 or 25-34. It makes NO sense for someone who's say 27 to be in a different category from someone who's say 31. 27 and 31 ARE IN THE SAME AGE GROUP!

I always felt the same way on my Birthday... I would get outrageous expectations that someone would surprise me or do exactly what I wanted but whenever someone would ask, I would act apathetic. Looking back, I think I just wanted someone to go the extra mile without me asking for it like I wanted the validation that I was worth it. Now in my twenties, I realize that nearly all the people who do have extravagant parties are very forthright with their desires and create plans themselves, even months in advance. I'm just not. that person and I thin that's okay :p

People are not in school, and you only go back there over a month later so no one remembers it was your birthday anymore. I literally spent the whole school year watching everyone having their birthday at school... Except for me. It was really miserable. I'm still secretly hoping one day someone will put up a secret birthday party for me, but I already know it's not gonna happen.

My boyfriend said he wanted to cook dinner for me (and he is no great cook). After a while of making noise in the kitchen he said dinner didn't work out, so he would take me out to dinner at a little restaurant we went to on our first date. When we got there, my family was already waiting to celebrate with us! He had called my mom and arranged everything with her in secret. My family drove up to our town as a surprise - the whole thing was so cute :)
I watched a TikTok once that was talking about how growing up was basically realizing that you have to plan your own birthday. As kids, our parents (mostly the moms) would plan the birthdays and as we get older they stop doing it so no one does. The past few years, my COVID birthdays have SUCKED because I just expected my friends or sisters to be planning something special without me asking but in reality, birthdays sneak up on people and life happens. If you don't plan your own birthday, no one will. And usually when other people *do* end up planning your birthday, it ends up being something they want to do (like with Rosie and the gun range), or eating food they want to eat. This video reminded me that I've been wanting to plan a solo-birthday for a long time now!
Last June I treated myself to a nice summer getaway to Denver Colorado and let me tell you doing it by myself, being in a nice big city by yourself is very rewarding and feels great

It wasn't as fancy as your hotel, but it was lovely to sit in the sun, by the sea. I too spent my birthday alone but it was perfect. If we don't have people around us who will treat us as special, we have to do that for ourselves. Your videos bring me such joy. I especially love the Moldova wedding video and watching all of your grandmother's wonderful cooking, what a blessing it is to have her in your life. Thank you for making this video! Watching this on a quiet and lonely (yet peaceful) Christmas day. Throughout most of my teen & young adult life, I would watch other people (including some of my friends) get thrown birthday parties and surprises by their friends. I’ve always wondered why I never really got to experience that. When you said “I am my closest friend” I really felt that. ❤️
I have also kind of "lost hope" for my birthday. I loved celebrating with my family, but since moving away it's so different. No one is there to plan and do things that I would want to do. It's been 6 years since I moved away and haven't celebrated my birthday like I used to. Your video inspired me to want to do it for myself, book an airbnb or treat myself to a fancy dinner. DUDE. This looked /absolutely amazing/. I'm just like you, I always wanted people to really give a crap about my birthday, and no one ever has. Either people didn't really care and never said anything, or they made it all about what they wanted. I also share my birthday with my mom, so she tends to overshadow my own wants and needs on this day.
I have hated my birthday every year because all it felt was like a song and dance for everyone else, not celebrating ME. But you're totally right, you shouldn't, and can't, rely on others to make your birthday special for YOU. You gotta do it yourself! From now on, this is what I'm going to do, too. But in the way you reason, I can feel that you are adulting in the right direction, in spite of your confusion. I really like your videos and can relate to them, since I don't live in my home country and away from my family, so i always call my grandparents after I watch your grandma's cooking videos. I always felt the same way on my Birthday... I would get outrageous expectations that someone would surprise me or do exactly what I wanted but whenever someone would ask, I would act apathetic. Looking back, I think I just wanted someone to go the extra mile without me asking for it like I wanted the validation that I was worth it. Now in my twenties, I realize that nearly all the people who do have extravagant parties are very forthright with their desires and create plans themselves, even months in advance. I'm just not. that person and I thin that's okay :p

I also turned 25 this year. I've never had a birthday party with actual friends or classmates because my birthday is on the first week of August. People are not in school, and you only go back there over a month later so no one remembers it was your birthday anymore. I literally spent the whole school year watching everyone having their birthday at school... Except for me. It was really miserable.
I'm still secretly hoping one day someone will put up a secret birthday party for me, but I already know it's not gonna happen.

Actually my only memorable birthday where someone organised it for me was my 25th, its a cute story so I wanna share. My boyfriend said he wanted to cook dinner for me (and he is no great cook). After a while of making noise in the kitchen he said dinner didn't work out, so he would take me out to dinner at a little restaurant we went to on our first date. When we got there, my family was already waiting to celebrate with us! He had called my mom and arranged everything with her in secret. My family drove up to our town as a surprise - the whole thing was so cute :)
I watched a TikTok once that was talking about how growing up was basically realizing that you have to plan your own birthday. As kids, our parents (mostly the moms) would plan the birthdays and as we get older they stop doing it so no one does. The past few years, my COVID birthdays have SUCKED because I just expected my friends or sisters to be planning something special without me asking but in reality, birthdays sneak up on people and life happens. If you don't plan your own birthday, no one will. And usually when other people *do* end up planning your birthday, it ends up being something they want to do (like with Rosie and the gun range), or eating food they want to eat. This video reminded me that I've been wanting to plan a solo-birthday for a long time now!
