I have been a Tacoma Mountaineer from 1972. Lou Whittaker, brother of the Everest climber, Jim, taught the intro class. We learned unforgettable skills up Mt. Rainier. One hard & fast rule is don’t leave home without your ice axe and a weather forecast. Also, lightning can come from embedded cumulonimbus in snowstorms. I learned a lot more later from David Brower, as well as veterans of the WWII Italy campaigns, where all the GIs were mountain troops, and got to know the mud, mules, and mountains.
I don’t know if you have this brand at home in the US, but here in Canada, in Arctic, I use the balm Blistex lip medex it repairs cracks rapidly . I also use it for fingers that tend to crack near the nails. The small pot fits well in the pockets of the pants. Also, your wet towels may freeze and become unusable. Protect them by putting them in a pair of socks, which will isolate them. Do not forget to put them in a ziploc, and keep an empty ziploc to put dirty towels. Legend has it that an average North Korean soldier can smell the scent of wipes from 10 miles away.
It gets dark early in the winter in the mountains. I like learning to wear the head lamp around the neck. there is nothing wors than digging for a flashlight in the dark.
The MREs are FREEZE DRIED. Extra BOOTS?? Nope! Very durable MSR snowshoes. Nordic nations' troops use wool or polypropylene fish net for their next-to-skin base layer. I love mine for skiing and winter camping. Did I miss the sleep system?
When is the 10th Mountain and the Army Mountain Warfare School moving back to Colorado? 4th ID doesn't need Colorado, they'll be alright at Ft. Drum and Polk. 10th Mountain is supposed to be the most deployed division in not just the US Army but the US military, and we all know how tough mountain warfare can be. The distance between Ft. Carson and Camp Hale in CO is shorter than the distance between Ft. Drum in NY and the Black Rapids in Vermont. It would save the Army time and money while ensuring more Soldiers are mountain qualified and get a regular amount of exposure to mountain training vice what they currently receive. It would also co-locate the 10th Mountain with 10th Special Forces Group, so that on occaision mountain Soldiers can train with Green Berets at the Special Forces Mountain School in CO, and 10th SFG can train with a partner force that has a higher skill base in mountain warfare than 4th ID. Hell, it'd probably help SF recruiting too. If 10th Mtn and the Army Mtn Warfare School were in CO, it would also allow the CO NG to receive more mtn training than they curently do, thereby strengthening the part time mountain warfare capability of the US Army in addition to the active component. Finally, moving 10th Mtn to CO would make them closer to Alaska, the Arctic, and as such, the Cold Weather Warfare School.
I really want to join but I started having back pain 2 years ago and it won’t go away so I’m gonna try to see if a doctor can fix it if not I don’t want to join and be a burden.
Exercise is the answer. Kettlebells, clubs, calisthenics, walking, and diaphragmatic breathing. If you sit a lot, you most likely have weak abs and are compressing your discs. You can fix it.
Always gotta appreciate the effort the soldiers do for our country. Also gotta appreciate them risking their lives to protect their country.❤

Not sure I saw a Ranger tab. 😆
It's literally on his uniform on his left shoulder
