It's nice to see my old barracks again after all these years. I was there in Mittenwald too, although not with the high mountain hunters or here so called mountain guides. It's a really good military base and it's beautiful there, in the middle of the mountains and the base has a very old and interesting history too.

If I noticed correctly the commanding officer of the course/school is both qualified as a Fallschirmjäger and Gebirgsjäger. I salute you. - - - - For the candidates who were not selected; you gave it your all. You never quit. That speaks volumes as to the warriors you are. I commend you all. Remember; surrender is not a Ranger word. Drive on; complete the mission though you be the lone survivor.

A friend of mine was in the 10th Special Forces, stationed in Germany in the early 1980s. He declined to carry "special weapons" (tactical nikes) so he asked to be attached to the German Army Mountain Guide unit. The following year he volunteered to join the Austrian Mountain troops (quietly, B/C Austria was "neutral" and not NATO). At 65 he is still an excellent t skier and has a lot of stamina. He said German and Austrian mountain troops could cover in one day the terrain that it took his Green Berets THREE days to cover

Bit of a shame that after all this effort they need a nanny to go with them if they ever go on a real mission - to quote "The Bundeswehr’s actions in Afghanistan have been limited by a number of clauses which have been negotiated as part of ISAF concerning the participation in combat operations and restrictive regulations concerning the security of the units." A very polite way of putting it.

Depending on the wound, pain: you try to visualise it, and then you "command" your brain to send cells there to heal it. For that you need to know the causes, gather info. It can be a lengthy process...

Cool, I've canoed the Mittenwald, well parts of it anyway. I wrote a thesis one year for the AMI on how many Mountaineering centres and lodges we had lost in the British Military along of course with local civilian jobs... Criminal..!

@leisureenjoyer1986 no I'm afraid it's not and I'm pretty sure I haven't even got a copy tbh. I'm not even sure if the AMI ever published it. I could make you a list off the top of my head if you wish but I can reiterate that the AT system within the UK Military was the envy of some other countries? But I suppose change is always inevitable...

@leisureenjoyer1986 no not quite, Adventure Training...The British Military had a Selection, Training and Qualifying procedure for both Adventure training and Outdoor Activity Instructors, with Senior and Chief Instructor positions and most if not all entered National civilian accredited programmes for Kayaking, Mountaineering and all adventure training sports to complement military service delivered qualifications. Long list to write, but I'm certainly happy to list mine if it helps...

Seeing as there's a bit of favouritism for specific country units, the Indian Army has a lot of experience on the Himalayas and have held Siachen for nearly 40 years now. Pitched battles have been recorded as high as 21,000 ft+. Units like our Para SF and the lesser known elite SFF have distinguished themselves.

You may call it "amateurish, civilians" or whatever...
But in battles in the Caucasus the elite 4. Gebirgs-Division of Wehrmacht and Edelweiss SS Division were destroyed by the Red Army, which was mainly formed from yesterday's civilians...
    So training civilians matters.

The Red Army simply overwhelmed the Germans with massive numbers of bodies, equipt by the commie supporting 'allies'. Also, the 'allies' were attacking on different fronts.

Completely different troop units that you mention here. These are mountain guides of the normal mountain troops (Gebirgsjäger) and you come up with British special forces training. It's not for nothing that the British often come to Austria and Germany because they don't have any mountains themselves
