- In this episode I speak to Sally Hoedel author of the new book Elvis Destined To Die Young.
Destined to Die Young is the definitive examination of why the world lost Elvis Presley on August 16, 1977, when he was only forty-two years old. Author Sally Hoedel has painstakingly researched the subject and offers factual and scientific data-plus never-before-published information she gained by interviewing people who personally knew Elvis-to support her claim that Elvis Presley was never going to live a long life.
In this well-documented book, Hoedel explores how prescription medication was only one aspect of his compromised health and did not ultimately cause his demise. She examines Elvis Presley-a son, husband, father, and devoted friend-while ploughing through the negative hype and legendary myths surrounding the man. Elvis’ downward spiral of health struggles is presented and, for the first time ever, it is revealed that he suffered from disease in nine of eleven bodily systems, five of which were present from birth. This book dispels the long-held theory that abuse of prescription drugs is what killed Elvis.

This is tragic, I'm a diehard Elvis fan and honestly, I had no idea Elvis had so many health problems. So many inherited genetic disorders, My Lord, it makes me so sad. He was such a beautiful person inside and out. How unfair life can be. Truly I just feel like weeping. Thank you for this video, but it broke my heart learning all of this because we all knew what a thoroughly decent human being Elvis was, and to learn that he suffered so much in his life with constant infections and pain, as a result of serious health issues is a complete shock.
Rest in peace Elvis, you were a kind and caring man, those who crossed your path were fortunate indeed.
As a new Elvis fan, I wanted to read a biography that would offer real insight into this incredible guy's life and represent him appropriately. This does it in spades. I read it in three days - could not put it down. It was devastatingly heart breaking and soul smashing to read certain elements of Elvis' life. OMG! I cannot recommend this book enough. Prepare though for a tsunami of emotions 😭😭😭😭😭
It isn't a biography though. There are a few excellent biographies, still the two by Peter Guralnick are considered the gold standard on Elvis books. There are a few other excellent ones as well.
Sally thank you for writing this book 📖 putting rumors at rest and connecting the facts. This is a must to read for anyone who wants to know what Elvis Presley lived with throughout his life.
The best video I've ever heard about his health and death! I do appreciate.
I'd like to add some special points.
1. His teeth pain the night before was an indication of his ❤.
2. Intestines problems indicate ❤ and lungs problems! In the East Medicine!
We just feel sorry for all he went through and we see how hard it was for him to give us his all.
We love him more and more ❤❤❤

I so enjoyed this interview. I too believe his colon, blood pressure and no sleep were a huge contributing factor to his death. I do not sleep without meds, due to a surgery that went wrong, and I can tell you if you go 24-48 hrs without sleep you I’ll have pain all over your body. Colon problems are extremely painful. Alpha One certainly is hereditary and would explain his having a hard time breathing at the end. This author makes a lot of sense. Thank you Steve
Oh Steve I’m so glad you have her interview. Her book is excellent. It tells you true facts about family history. If people look at Elvis and only see drugs then people are missing the true humanitarian he was. She answers the health issues that no one else has.
Great interview I now feel I that must read this book is I think by what I heard tonight that Elvis was in fact really quite ill a long part of his life. Being the caring human being he was that he felt his responsibly was to care for the many people around him even if it was detrimental to his own health. Plus his work schedules were too much for someone with his health conditions. Thank you for sharing this interview
Actually his schedule was too much for a healthy person. It would make anyone sick. I don’t think he had to work like that to support everyone and even to give as much as he gave I think it’s because Parker and was stealing from him . His father just helped make him feel guilty with threats that he would lose everything. His father was always a downer to him.
She has hit the nail on the head. I have always felt and said that. Even his ‘Mafia’ didn’t understand him. I am absolutely enraged that he was so badly treated, or not treated, by the medical profession.
really..... is this what fans now believe? That the MM who spent all those years with him, didn't understand him. I think they understood better than someone who wasn't there, who was 1 when he died and who speaks to people for a book 40 years after he's passed.

I agree 100% he could've had the best care. He had the money- but no one advocated for him. He did what he was signed up to do . Over work
He was that rarest combination- a great man who was also a good man. He changed the world with talent and love. I can't imagine what my life would have looked like without his example. It is an ESSENTIAL part of his story, this world being what it is, that someone who gave so much should have been so slandered after his death. Even the Encyclopedia Britannica, states he died from ''drugs''. This book, like the reopening of the autopsy investigation in the 90's (which concluded that he died of a genetic heart defect) will not change the ''requirement'' of mythic rock star ''death from drugs''. He continues ''to pay the cost to be the boss''. He was one of the most mythic personalities of all time- dying of a heart attack, in the bathroom, like a regular ''Joe'' is not in the cards. I have zero need to judge him (how absurd to presume to pass judgement on Elvis Presley)- my love for him is unconditional and has been a constant in my life since I was a young boy.

How could Priscilla live with her self knowing that she cheated on him and then divorced him and took him for so much money the only way she could live with herself was to save Graceland. I will be ordering this book. It’s the best thing that could happen for such an awesome man. I’ve never believed he passed away from a drug overdose. Thank you for sharing your interview & the author that did such a great job of putting it all together for the Elvis fans.
It is so hard to even begin to imagine how much he suffered physically his entire life. This is so very sad...and to think he has been ridiculed...mocked, and disrespected for decades in most cases because of not knowing his
genetic background and how he was trying to cope with the hand he was dealt. Thank you for this interview.

In light of Lisa Marie’s untimely death, this interview has been so educational! I had never heard about the genetic predisposition for his many ailments but it makes so much sense! I will be purchasing this book to learn more. Thank you!
My parents are first cousins, my Mother passed away at 86 and my Father is still with us at 96. So I do not hold much water in what she says. I always understood that if you intermarry beyond the first generation THEN there can be a weakening of the gene pool.
If your parents are cousins it's not going to affect them, it's the children that they have and their children who will be effected by their genetics.
We would need to know how long you and your siblings live and if your children have issues.
My grandparents were said to be cousins but I'm not certain it was first cousins. I've never found out how their families matched up.
My father is 93. He's got some issues and is on medication but I've had numerous health challenges and my son has as well. I don't know if they are from genetics or simply the huge amount of stress my father has caused his family.

I hope you and your desendants are just fine and enjoy your long lives.
It's more important that we be married to someone we love and respect than where they came from or how much they're related to our family. It's the love that matters. ❤

I have some of the same issues, passed down in my family, which comes from the South (Kentucky, Arkansas, and Texas). My mother had a massive stroke at 43 years of age that paralyzed her entire right side, and she spent 17 years hospitalized, dying at 60. I have feared that same outcome and chose not to drink, smoke, take drugs or medications and until Covid-19 was pretty active. Now that I have outlived my mother I wonder when my time will come. The WHY is important to learn and understand because it is REAL! Totally feel the book is worthy of reading and understanding, not just for Elvis fans, but everyone wanting to understand the how and why Elvis was destined to die young.

I'm more confused after this interview. I've heard 14 different drugs but she says 10. He supposedly got Dilauidid from the Dentist but she says it was codeine.
I do find the point that he got up off the toilet and took a step or two before he fell does sound like a problem from stressing out.
If he was overdosing wouldn't he just have stayed on the toilet and fallen asleep ? or don't you throw up when oding ?
I just saw a video where an Asian doctor says that he didn't have a heart related death.
I think it's possible that it was his heart but he couldn't feel it coming because he was on so much medication. So a bit of both, maybe a bit of everything contributed.
He was having a tough time obviously and that's really all that matters. He wanted to keep going, he was just about to tour again.
That's the facts that should be remembered of Elvis. He still had more to give.
Just think of all the concerts we've missed in Heaven. He's made a bunch of new stuff for us to enjoy, cause it won't be Heaven without Elvis Presley making music there. 😅⚡️❤ 🌠
She has confirmed Elvis’s personality was such that he would NEVER just decline into drug addiction. He had health issues that were intense and terminal. How people can be so shallow as to not remember all of his accomplishments and his philosophy of life....how Christian he was. The huge humanitarian that he was. To me....this book IS THE book that explains him. It really irritates me to hear uneducated people say she is wrong...because 2 of his cousins didn’t have his problems. If you know anything about genetics...inherited problems...each child has a percentage chance of inheriting each problem. Not having the problems...means these problems were really strongly represented. You know...you can’t fight stupidity...they will hold onto their ignorance.
In the Elvis movie that Lisa Marie and Priscilla cooperated, it appears they didn’t understand either. Maybe part of that is Elvis was good at hiding the underlying problems. So, they didn’t understand why he took the medicines. Just having 3 prior heart attacks, it’s hard to believe he was able to tour as much as he did in 1977. This author also documents the physical problems going way back to his childhood and being life long problems. Lisa Marie was complaining about stomach problems the 24 hours proceeding her heart failure. They have not finalized her autopsy toxicology or it hasn’t been released. Just a sad thing about her, her son and Elvis

@@Kaybeautyfinds He passed 2 in depth physicals prior to his final concert tour, passed them both. He was required to do this for insurance purposes. Then he left us the very day he was supposed to begin his tour.

It's sad that he didn't have a better manager and more importantly better friends.
Elvis never revealed his illnesses to others.
Nothing to do with his manager. His friends all tried to help Elvis overcome his addiction to some of the meds, but what they didn't know is that Elvis would not have survived without many of them - for his heart, liver, colon, glaucoma, insomnia. The poor guy...it is a wonder he lived as long as he did.😮💨

Fantastic interview. I’m a nurse and I’ve come to many of the same conclusions that I put together about his life and his death. Not knowing some of the background she knows, a lot of it makes complete medical sense. There are several fans that have claimed they have specimens of his hair after he kissed them and they’d pull at his hair. They’ve kept it in small bottles etc through the years. If we could have them genetically tested with the DNA science we have today, I wonder if we could get answers to many of these questions. I certainly will read this book and contact the author to speak of the DNA testing if somehow we were able to do. Thanks for your wonderful interviews you do! God bless.

I don’t think having Elvis hair would help because he had his hair dyed black in a fairly regular basis. So dyes would have chemically changed his hair and any DNA that it held. I always wondered when larry got there to go to prepare Elvis hair for the funeral. He said I didn’t have my dyes with me when he was going to go on tour. Why wouldn’t he have had them?
Wait 2027. His autopsy will be released from his family.
Elvis said once, “they want pieces of you for sovieniers.”
@@gracieg7601 one woman said her ring got caught in his hair and pulled out a bunch by the roots. She’s kept it in a baby food jar. If she has the roots it would work with today’s high sensitivity to test the smallest item for DNA.

Very informative interview. I always suspected that his health problems had more to do with his death than people realized. I wish all the non Elvis fans would read her book so they would know what Elvis went through in his short life because he loved us. I am pre-ordering this book today.
I’ve got the book and I loved it. It helps to understand how and why he died at such a young age. His cousin Billy said he went into his bathroom and took his drugs whatever it was & you didn’t know what he took. He didn’t take anything in front of anyone.

Knowing as much about Elvis as I do, I can categorically state that doing drugs for the sake of getting high went 100% against Elvis' morals, standards and character.
What a man, a truly gifted legend.
He does not deserve the character assassinations inflicted upon him.
What truly baffles me is that Priscilla professes him to be the love of her life yet stands idly by and just let's the vicious lies flow.
I will defend his reputation and legacy every time I come across the degrading ignorance that some display when commenting negative stuff about him.
No one can touch Elvis when it comes to being authentic, sincere, generous and humble.
His ever escalating fame never reached his ego.
We will surely miss him until we are called home ourselves.

Zilla Beaulieu not only 'stands idly by' as vicious lies flow but contributes to them herself in practically all media interviews which unfortunately are never-ending as she plays the part of 'the grieving widow' to the nth degree portraying herself as a manipulated victim!! She is of course nothing of the sort - this untalented woman sees herself as a 'star' yet exists on the talent of her ex husband who divorced her 50 years ago!!! Elvis must be turning in his grave at her greed and the vicious lies which flow from her mouth (and in her ghost-written book) - her ultimate disrespect to this great man was when she wished him 'Happy Birthday' from the podium at Graceland several times at the August 2022 candlelit commemoration, even getting many bewildered fans to echo her birthday wishes..... She is a disgrace.

This book is factual and incredibly correct, better than the stuff that was written 30, 40, 50 years ago. She has got him right! It should be required reading. It should be on the NY Times bestseller list!
Another excellent interview Steve. I was also of this opinion right from the start. I have always said that Elvis died from medical negligence. His problems were never dealt with, just disguised with medications. I will definitely add this book to my collection. Thank you both. 💖
Not negligence. The knowledge of Elvis's health issues was not around then, nor was the treatment. Nowadays, he would have had keyhole surgery to correct the colon, drops in his eyes for the glaucoma rather than tablets, better medication for the high BP, bypass surgery or a pacemaker to enable his heart to function.

“He saw his access to healthcare as ‘success’.” This is a simply devastating statement and one that all US citizens ponder. When you are poor in America, there’s no mercy. You are screwed.
Searching Gladys Love Smith Presley through "find a grave" for the list of her siblings. Gladys died at 46, Her sister Retha died at 46, Her brother Johney Lee died at 46, her brother Tracy died at 49, her brother Travis at 59. Being their parents were first cousins did affect their genes and subsequently Elvis and his twin brother who was stillborn. It's a miracle he survived till 42 years old
He also expressed a concern he had about people forgetting about him musically when he went overseas. He may very well have been more concerned about how his family members would fare without his financial support during that 2 year period after his mother passed. Makes sense💌
I think Elvis's death was also bought on by the stress and the horrific schedule that Col Parker had him on during the Vegas days how could his heart take the damning schedule he was on, also the medication he was on too ,and I do believe there was heart problems in the family, he made a hell of a difference in the music world, was it destined for him to take this path who knows but he has left something for the world ,his Voice ❤️🙏
You still need to read the book and the interview is good but there’s still more in the book that you need to take in.
Elvis’s private life was his own period. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. We fans will do so much for Elvis and are totally dedicated! However in comparison to what this man gave to us does not compare. He left a legacy to his family friends and fans that will last an eternity- and I truly believe he gave his life for this- he was a gift from god, truely an angel sent to earth 😇👼🙏🏻 1935-1977- forever 🌹💔❤️

I'm basically speechless. The content of this really interesting interview blows my mind. My compliments, Steve. I am curious about the reactions to this interview and the book in the Elvis world and beyond.
I have been reading many Elvis books.I try to discern fact from fiction.I came to the conclusion that his nurses and Dr Nick knew why he took meds...his illnesses caused much pain.Elvis was not physically addicted.He was psychologically addicted to some.Also he poured so much adrenalin during his shows he had to take pills to calm down and sleep. Dr. Nick said he was not an addict.Ginger said he was not addicted.If you can take placebos in lieu of sleep pills and not have withdrawal you are not addicted..just phycologically. He had to have pills to live a normal life because of his medical conditions.I am reading a book in which Marty Thacker says Elvis took pills but you couldnt tell because he was never stoned. Also he said Elvis was a happy person.Ginger verifies that.Everybody goes through difficult times.He got over Priscilla.He moved on.Certain other situations did not cause him to be forever unhappy.Rather he was frustrated such as Parker and his music etc.But these things did not overtake the generally happy person he was.I agree with this author on almost everything because I researched these things myself.I was able to mostly separate fact from fiction and arrive at logical conclusions.We Elvis fans have a responsibility to set the record straight about him.A great injustice has been done to such a fine human being.Long live Elvis.

Encourage others not to read or listen to anything from Priscilla.Lisa's book, finalized by Riley, will be out soon.I will read it but I hope Priscilla did not have input.
How did he do all those dance moves and Karate work outs on stage if he was so physically ill when he looked so fit and very athletic ? How did he belt out those powerful ballads with Tonsillitis ? He must of been one unique gifted human being. He did remarkably well to live to 42 being in such poor health his whole life.
He performed often while sick.

A huge portion of the bodies immunity is located in the gut So this explains a lot about EP's health issues! So sad that he wasn't given better health interventions. Nowadays we have Colonic hydrotherapy clinics that specialize in mechanical removal and cleansing and is painless may experience some discomfort!

It’s the British media who put out the worst lies about the death of Elvis. Really humiliating and cruel things about him being fat, his diet and a drug addict. I was overseas at the time and read the tabloids about Elvis. I am American and was shocked as everyone when he died.
I think that a lot of people have to make their excuses to Elvis for all the wrong they said about him. Of course a lot of them have already passed. They have probably already given their excuses directly to him up there! God bless his beautiful soul. 2021
Great interview. Being in the medical field myself, and study genetics, she is definitely right. Elvis also had fatty liver disease, which in itself is a killer and definitely causes you to blow up in weight, fluids, etc.
Yes, Elvis possibly suffered from some form of mental dysfunction too, but that isn't the cause of death, possible did contribute more to his need for more downer type medications, especially in the end. He definitely never truly recovered from his loss of the family unit, so important to a southern man.
Elvis, well, We all know lead the way for us all. I was blessed to be able to see him perform during his life several times.

Yes very good point. And not enough exposure to sunlight, meant almost no Vitamin D.

I was 13 when he died. I had an older relative in her 40s at the time who would crank his music all the way up. I didn’t like it and thought he dressed oddly. Fast forward to Lisa Marie’s death. I always would read about her. She was 9 when Elvis died. I was 9 when my mother died of cancer. So, I related to Lisa Marie losing a parent at the sane age. It’s tough. When Lisa Marie died I started to listen to Elvis Music and watch the old tapes and find out more about him. I found that I really liked his music now (not as much the early stuff). I was also curious about what happened to him. In the movie that Lisa Marie and Priscilla cooperated with, the drug use is depicted and blamed. So it seems they didn’t understand either. I found your interview with this author and also the one with the nurse very informative. It isn’t fair of anyone to judge Elvis. I think the author of Destined to Due Young comes closest to what really happened. I’m 58. I’m old enough to remember how little could be done for alot of conditions back in the 1970s. My mother had breast cancer that they really were not effective dealing with in the early 1970s. For many years even into the 1990s, detection of heart problems was not was it us today. I think. Charlie Hodge, Kathy Westmoreland and others discuss the health problems. Elvis was human with a lot of people depending on him. It seems like he did the best he could to cope with all he had on his plate to deal with. My special needs son suffers from constipation, insomnia and anxiety. It impacts us because it impacts him. I’m glad I rediscovered Elvis. Thank you for your nonjudgmental interviews about him.
Beautiful post Kay, thank you for sharing your experiences with us. My husband died from COPD last year but he also had diabetes and a few other illnesses. He had chronic heart failure and had stents put in to his arteries, a double bypass, and an implanted defibrillator. None of that was around in the 1970's. Not to mention keyhole surgery. Elvis could probably have lived a lot longer if he had been born in the 1950s not the 1930s. But then we wouldn't have had that music..

I got the arthritis I’m only 40 I’ve had it for 5 years now and my digestive system is all messed up unless I eat a certain way. And I started waking up and not sleeping. His problem was genetic. I believe it because I have it too

Interesting perspective on Elvis health problems I think she is right Elvis took drugs to get through ( to self medicate) rather than get wasted. No doubt some of his health problems where inherent but there were other factors as well. It's been said that the glaucoma was the result of all those flash bulbs going off and the stage lights. If you've had a flash go off in front of you it blinds you for a while imagine hundreds going off and also peforming under very strong stage lights. That has to have a damaging effect on your eyes and Elvis very often had to be guided off stage because he couldn't see very well at the end of a show. . It's pretty fair to conclude that Elvis major problem was he couldn't sleep and he had trouble winding down after a show.. a lot his medications were downers to supress the brain activity and he needed uppers to counter the effects. This could also explain why the medications got stronger and he took them more often some feel he was a manic depressive and subject to flashing mood changes.. He also suffered stage fright. So imagine what he went through to go on stage peform to the best of his ability and then to wind down afterwards. Then you have his diet. He came from poverty and grew up with a poor diet. He devolped a taste for salty and fatty foods. He wasn't into fine dining and healthy eating. A treat to him was crispy fried bacon burgers, ice cream, fried peanut butter sandwiches. Tastes good but it didn't do his system much good. So his problems were genetic and environmental and pyschological.
IMO that is.
Also, he had to provide livelihoods for over a 100 people.

No he lived for several minutes before he passed away, it must have been terrible knowing you were dying and nobody to even help you!!!!!
So good i listened twice. Makes a whole lot of sense. He was even more of a gift given what he had to deal with. When he said there was an image and a flesh and blood man to me, it seems he was referring to alot of people wanting to be him yet he knew he had alot of health issues not everything was what it seemed and in fact money wasnt everything as he knew but the image was larger than the man himself so he had to appear strong, its like he said it without saying it explicity. That is really upsetting to think he suffered so much yet gave us all so much, soldiering on the only way he knew he could in that time with the pills. I wonder if his twin Jessie did not survive birth because of these inherited issues? People mock but Gladys knew he was fragile hence the closeness they had. It really is a wonder we had him at all and it would so good to change the narrative of his death in popular culture of the true causes of why he ended up the way he did, as he has been judged shamefully by the shortsighted.

I am totally impressed with this book and what Sally said I find that so interesting and as a 47 yr healthcare worker I also agrees a young man should not die so young unless there were underling health issues this makes a whole lit is sense to me he is still missed but his life contributed a lot of good I have found so much information about Elvis and I have been to Graceland and I still think very highly of this man god bless his soul I truly agree the truth does need to be told thank you for sharing

Reading “Last Train to Memphis” right now and here’s an excerpt of an Elvis meal directly from the book: “ I don’t feel like I’m property, “Elvis told columnist Joe Hyams, while lunching alone in his dressing room on a bowl of gravy, a bowl of mashed potatoes, nine slices of well-done bacon, two pints of milk, a large glass of tomato juice lettuce salad, six slices of bread and four pats of butter.”
And this is his need-to-be-in-shape-for-the-film-diet. Combine that with all the drugs he was taking and you’ve got a colon catastrophe. And more.

I heard that he never ate fried peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwiches. It was a myth that got started and just never stopped.
He did eat peanut butter and banana sandwiches and he ate bacon but not together.
One of the cooks at Graceland wrote a lovely book about her time working for Elvis. She wrote about the time he asked her to make the fried PBB sandwiches and she got it wrong. He came down to the kitchen and showed her. Toast two slices of bread, spread peanut butter and mashed banana on one slice; put the other slice over the top, and fry the sandwich in one stick of butter. I don't know what a stick of butter is but I believe it is quite a lot. He had the bacon on the side, not in the sandwich.

Is the drugs and weight issues, which she talks about everything and she investigated all the issues and health problems!!! Elvis was not a drug addict, he was a human in horrible pain and suffered in silence! I jus love the truth that was told her and properly investigated!!!
