Odenkirk wrote the Matt Foley character however Chris Farley brought him to life. Without Chris, Matt Foley would be just a character description on a page. The performance makes any character, not the description of said character.
Farley's comedic timing is what is probably his most underrated asset. Just look at how absolutely perfect he was at 1:35. They probably didn't event rehearse this, either because Chris was such a good improvisational actor.
How is anything about Chris Farley "underrated"? What is that, some new word you learned yesterday and now you're compelled to find new ways to use it, appropriate or not? Did you look it up first? Do you ever think about what you're saying before you say it? Do you think you're the only person who noticed Farley's timing along with the rest of his skills? Underrated? Farley was a beloved, talented, unique, and renowned comic. "Comedic timing" is what makes any good comic, great comics ALL have great comedic timing, you can't separate that trait from the rest of the talent because without it you don't have any talent at all. Are you the only person on the planet that doesn't get that the rest of us are well aware of Farley's comedic timing along with the rest of his skills? I think your grasp of the English language is overrated. Your comment is absurd and an insult to Farley's legacy.
He appeared perfectly timed at 1:35 largely because Max is a top drummer and able to respond instantly to any cue like the one when Chris points at the spot you're referring to. Max has to catch every cue that Bruce Springsteen gives him all night for 4 hours a night, every gesture. They do in fact rehearse these beforehand. I've been to a Conan show. I'm also in the music/entertainment business (45 years). Much of this is improv, but Max was on high alert for his own cues.
It's crazy to think I watched Chris Farley as a kid and now I'm almost older than he was when he died... such a sad end for someone so funny, Matt Foley always gets a laugh no matter how many times I've seen Farley do it
I've got him by 8 years and it doesn't seem like that long ago I was watching that special cast of snl. Then of course Tommy boy hit. I actually have it on my phone SD card now. He was something special for sure.
The Chevy Chase Show was his short lived talk show that lasted from September 7, 1993 to October 15, 1993. This Conan clip aired 3 days later on October 18, 1993.
Dennis Miller (1992), Chevy Chase (1993), Jon Stewart (1994-95), Keenan Ivory Wayans (1997), Magic Johnson (1998). The '90s were full of failed late-night celebrity talk shows.
I don't know if I would really count Jon Stewart as fail because he went right from his show to hosting the daily show I looked it up kind of crazy he did 2593 episodes According to IMDB
Truly there will never be anybody as funny and if witty as Chris Farley in my lifetime. I grew up watching this man and his loss to this day still sting. Thankfully we still have clips of him and his movies. Chris Farley is gone too soon but he will never be forgotten.
Seeing Farley say this about his size and knowing he felt like it was the only reason people liked him breaks my heart. He had real comedic talent and some of the very best comedians did physical comedy, just see Lucille Ball, Jim Carrey and Kramer himself, Michael Richards. It's not as easy as they make it seem.
I watched an episode of "Dark Side of Comedy" about Chris Farley a while back. He was a brilliant comedic talent, but his life was very sad. I'm a big guy myself and watching this, I see the insecurity behind the jokes and I can relate. My heart aches for him.
I feel the same way. Seeing this video is very uncomfortable. Mr. Farley clearly was an extremely talented performer who knew exactly how to make an audience roar with laughter. But it is also just as clear that he was very ambivalent about that comedy. I think he craved the laughter and the attention, but also felt shame at the manner in which he got that laughter. The downward eyes while saying things like "how dumb I am" and "hose tubby off" betrays his inner thoughts.
One of the funniest guys of all time, but you can sense he is not at peace with himself especially during the sitdown part of the show. I think Chris felt he had to be " on" all the time to feel accepted by others, even though he was already loved by millions of fans.

Chris Farley's 'Matt Foley' character was perhaps one of the few comedic acts (back in the day) that actually made me *_'laugh-out-loud';_* his originality was incomparable, and he was truly a class act in his own right. I actually find myself missing and relating to Chris in a unique sort of way, as - fully understanding the idea of [mock] character-creation/impersonation in my younger years - I had that same [natural] ability to make others (friends/family) laugh, simply through [observed] imitation of stereotypical 'stock characters'; but unlike Farley, never got serious with the idea ... I'm sure Farley's iconic comic uniqueness and greatness will live on for many - including those aspiring future comics - years to come. _'Cheers!'_ Thanks for posting!
Gosh, I will forever love that dude! He must have bent the laws of physics every time he did a cartwheel with such ease. I feel blessed by having lived at the same time as Mr. Farley.
It's kind of striking how green Conan is. Interviewing someone when you have to stick to time and probably questions they were already asked and make it seem like a natural conversation is far from the easiest thing in the world and you can see how it seems like he's sticking closer to a script and he's a little tentative when asking questions. Now he's considered one of the greats and even has a podcast that is all interview. What a difference 30 years makes.

I'm so honored to play Matt, probably my best role in a show so far. Chris Farley was such a great actor, he knew just how to act when he needed to. I can tell how good at improv he is with this, too.
It’s remarkable Chris didn’t have a heart attack doing some of these performances. Overdose aside, there’s no way he would have made it past his late 40s in that physical condition.
