  • In 1811 the town of Jacksdale in Nottinghamshire was simply, a farm.
But then came the industry, and the railways, and the people.
By the end of the 1800s, Jacksdale was a Mecca of industry with multiple collieries, ironworks, railways, tramways, and canal wharfs.
Now, in 2024, the industry is all but gone.
I am joined by Phil as we take a walk from the site of the former Pyehill Colliery, down to the active Erewash valley railway lines where we explore the remains of the former Great Northern Railway, that once ran parallel.
We search for a former tramway that went under the railway and into an Ironworks.
There are an incredible amount of remains hiding in the woodland.
We then walk round following the now removed embankment of the Great Northern into the centre of Jacksdale where we find the old Portland canal Wharf and Portland tramway. The tramway once brought coal from the Portland collieries just outside Jacksdale to the Cromford canal.
After a quick search for the remains of an aqueduct, we walk along the Cromford canal until we reach the remains of another Great Northern Railway line that came out of the former Codnor Park Works, to join the original Great Northern line we had followed into Jacksdale.
There are plenty of remains of the industry that quite literally put this small Nottinghamshire village, on the map.

It's amazing with the many canals, viaducts, tram lines and rail lines and how they developed over time to service the local industries. And then how they have made most of it all disappear with new development or farmland..

Hayup Gareth impressed by the cromford canal an the old wharf, if only we could turn back time!
Brilliant film this loads going on, those early co.op,s had them Vienna fingers an some folks just cant get enough, of em.
If they spin that thing up at the place with holes in there cheese, Phil,s return cruise journey maybe by way of paddle steamer! an him being a man of culture that'd probably go down well.
so much rain daaawnn saaafff door grew bigger spent two hours sawing an sanding, then said to the dog let's go outside, is it spring yet? Hard to call with plenty of crazy skies.
Cheers an have a great weekend and beyond!

Just found your fascinating video. I live at Codnor Park and often go jogging along the Canal passing the " We hate Derby" graffiti. Thought about changing it to "Forest" ! If you go across the canal at this point and follow the footpath (which is an old railway line) towards Codnor Park you go past an interesting area where they used to dump the slag waste (a lot of which is still there) from the old Codnor Park ironworks. I wish I could have been in this area when all the industry and railways were working. The noise and smell must have been totally amazing ! Up the Rams !

    Great Video
We’ve been down the Canal here and down The wharf, I even put a video up about the Grey Topper a few months ago.
Jacksdale is proud of its Heritage, you only need to look at their Community Hall and the work finding and restoring the war memorial to see that.
Looking forward to your next venture as I’m working my way through the back list 👍

Interesting walk Gareth/Phil; so much history around there.
Pity you didn't seem to look into the Portsmouth link and HMS Warrior though? HMS Warrior was Britain's first ironclad warship and the deck beams were manufactured by the Butterley Company at the Codnor Park Ironworks. If you visit Warrior in Portsmouth you'll see that the Butterley name is stamped onto the beams.
