The Walk - EP 159 - The Largest Explosion In History - The Destruction Of RAF Fauld - Staffordshire
During the Second World War, RAF Fauld in Staffordshire was used as an enormous bomb storage facility. The MOD had taken over the underground mining tunnels, to be used in the war effort.
But on Monday 27th November 1944, something truly horrific happened. The missiles, and bombs in the underground tunnels exploded.
It was the largest explosion in British history, and the largest non nuclear explosion in the world.
90 people lost their lives that day, but their deaths were kept secret, as the government didn't want the enemy to know what had happened.
I am joined by Phil, and by Ande, and we explore what is left of the site, including railways, tunnels, and bunkers, before making our way to the epicentre of the explosion.
Fauld crater is 30 metres deep, and 300 metres wide, and still contains unexploded bombs, that have lay dormant for 80 years.

What a result this walk turned out to be! I am joined once again by Phil, Ande and Jake, and we're trekking the Caldon Canal in Staffordshire. We start off in Leek, and follow the 1800 Leek arm of the canal down to the stunning Hazlehurst aqueduct, and Hazelhurst Junction. Hello, and welcome to another explore! I'm back visiting my childhood home of the Isle of Wight, and I'm here to explore the very last medieval lighthouse in the United Kingdom. Hello Gareth my father was a linen service manager that covered hospitals in this area, he found all manner of discrepancies in patients numbers especially when transferred from place to place the last location often records disappeared and only if written in to visiting book or other such thing did you get a total number of residences, the requirement to know was to be able to cope with volumes of laundry, it was a very similar story in many areas of his career whereby area health authorities where fudging numbers, likewise the dates of buildings often don’t add up, especially in respect of asylums not allways but certainly sometimes, the repurposed stately homes or estates where quite common for asylums and mental hospitals.often unsuitabley so, even when claimed built for! This complex looks like a grand college campus how bizarre if its purpose built with several quite similar in England probably worth a look at the available plans for the same architect?! All the wars was a driver and also those who didn’t toe the line of the narrative is the overall findings of many researchers worldwide. In the first photo aerial view at 1.58 ish there’s a big circle in the background like a walled pond? Circuit board earth comes to mind turn a high energy location in to a low low by adding trauma and upset, it’s got all the look of the old world with grand towers and cupolas big halls and main entrances with clocktowers. Cheers

Hayup Gareth there’s so much going on in this one how many layers of canals railways and rivers, brilliant that Peter let you look around it’s a response to your collective enthusiasm, the wheel circumference and how many revolutions per minute you may be able to work out the theoretical water flow speed, it varies wheel width and chute width depth, so it won’t relate to river speed. Taxes on bricks for number off then size perhaps that’s why the pyramids and balbeck are so big? They did the window tax of course and the lesser known door tax, there was even a concrete or lime mortar floor tax seen evidence of that in post 1930s wooden garages they buried the concrete floors as it reduced the rates or rateable value, may have been 1953 or thereabouts when business rates became overlayed on to house. either way if you complained to much or to vividly you where offered a stay at one of them hospitals for the alternative minded. fantastic episode, Cheers

The line from Langley Mill beyond Cromford Road to Brinsley and to Watnall / Moorgreen was not MR it was the Barber Walker Colliery Railway later NCB, it picked the MR up again south of Watnall

Thanks for another journey into the past Gareth and the guys . It seems there is so much history that is not exactly hidden , but not really spoken about too much either. My mind is working overtime wondering why so much coal was needed for an "asylum", Keep on truckin' and have a great new year 👍👍

I was down at Marlpool station this morning, 04/01/2025, with my dog. The water that you could see from the top of the embankment was covering the footpath proper, which in turn was part of the trackbed from Heanor back to Ilkeston. A lot of the water is what' been drained from the fields on your right as you're walking towards Marlpool station. There are about 4 or 5 trees down after the storms recently making access difficult but not impossible now. There is a small group of volunteers working on clearing years of leaves and soil from parts of the platform surfaces, revealing the out lines of the station buildings. I'm a first time visitor to your channel and enjoyed this video. I have now subscribed.
