Carnaval San Francisco kicks off with street party in Mission District

San Francisco kicked off its annual Carnaval celebration on Saturday with a food and music festival occupying seven blocks of Harrison Street in the Mission District. John Ramos reports.

Back in the day, specifically and especially in 1991, San Francisco Carnival was filled with so much more heart and soul than it is today (which is not bad, but not as warm or as heart-centered as it was back then…in my humble opinion, of course).
In 1991, the parade was LIT 🔥 ! We had Orixá Babá with Betho Filho, Katia, Pelé, Claudio, Branca and a few other amazing artists from Bahia Brazil 🇧🇷 as well as a couple of amazing American dancers (including a native-born San Franciscan) leading the group alongside Katia. The bateria were as Bas A** as Olodum (who came up a few weeks later), the Afro-Brazilian choreography was UNparalelled, the costumes were original, the ISH and glorious!!! We SET IT OFF! Thank you Betho, Pelé, Claudio, Branca, Katia for bringing us the rich, soulful sounds and culture of Bahia! 🔥 ♥️ 🙏🏽

It's kind of all over Latin America and the Caribbean. It is estimated that Carnaval (spelled with "av" instead of "iv" in many non-English places) is celebrated in over 220 cities and towns in Mexico.
