Exercises After Scoliosis Correction Surgery Fusion

- Scoliosis correction surgery using fusion of the spine is one of the more common spine surgeries in adolescents. This is indicated when the scoliosis curve progresses past 45 degrees.
Even though this surgery is a very large fusion, many orthopedic surgeons don't refer for physical therapy after this surgery. There are many reasons this might be, but one of the biggest is they don't think it is needed.
The problem with this is that I see patients in my clinic all the time after fusion surgery that are having other issues related to the changes from the surgery. It isn't that the surgery was bad or not indicated, it is just that the body is not used to the new orientation.
If you have had scoliosis correction surgery, please make sure your doctor has cleared you before doing these exercises. Also, these are best done under the supervision of a Physical Therapist trained in scoliosis treatment.

Emerson is adorable. She can be so proud of her success. Thank you, Emerson, for showing us these exercises.
Thank you too!
I had my surgery 5 years ago at the age of 15 and it was a huge success , it lasted 10 hours . I just wanna say to scoliosis patients don’t be ashamed of your body before or even after the surgery and believe the surgery helps a lot it’s a little challenging to keep a flexible body after it but with everyday exercise you can do it 😊.
Great advice! Thank you
Thanks a million, scoliosis is not known in developing countries so this video is able to illustrate them scoliosis surgery isn't terrifying
Thank you for your thoughts!
What a great resource! I had almost an identical scoliosis curve as Emerson when I was 13. But, that was over 20 years ago, and I didn't have these kinds of videos and exercises. I'm so happy there is support and encouragement for these exercises!!
Thanks for sharing!
I had surgery 48 years, yes YEARS ago. I was not give any after surgery directives accept don’t dive or do gymnastics?!😵💫My plan is to start today! I have a granddaughter on the way and I NEED to be the best grandmother I can❣️
@@user-bw5uj8uf6u that is awesome. Thank you for sharing!
I had the scolosis surgery 4 months ago now I am much much better
How was the surgerie would you recommend it?
Good to hear
I'm dealing with the same problems as anot4her commenter: 5 years since surgery at 21 y/o and lately the pain in my lower back and especially shoulders has increased greatly. Sitting at my desk too much and unaffordable gym subscriptions are probably the biggest culprits. Having a set of exercises I can do in a few minutes is very helpful and just using the muscles is already making the pain subside a little in the short term. I am curious to see what it will do in the long run. Thank you Align Therapy and most of all thank you Emerson!
Hope it continues to help. Thanks for sharing!
Wow i get scared to do such because my back feels heavy thank you for the video
Thanks for the comment
I'm sorry, but what does she use on her surgical wound? The wound looks very good. There are hardly any scratches. I'd like to try using it. And thank you for the exercise.
I am not sure what she used but some of my patients use vitamin E.
I had my scoliosis surgery five years ago and lately I’ve been experiencing excruciating back pain. I’m not sure if it’s because of stress, sitting all day in class or lack of physiotherapy but my back feels heavy and uncomfortable, thanks for this video!
You are welcome. Good luck!
Me too
@@ingridramirez4436 thanks for watching!
My daughter had a c-curve (40 degrees to the right) and was operated a couple of years ago at 13 years of age. She had a VBT surgery which enables her to do everything like bending, twisting and even sports just like normal children and Emmerson has been her inspiration ever since she saw this video. But there are a few remnants of that curve which are very minor. Is there still a way to fix that? We are from India.
For a curve that isn't fused that is above and below the fusion, I would do Schroth. If it is within the fusion, it is set.
I was very rude for this video thank you very much, my surgery was two years ago and my pain is still terrible, what do you advise me
I would definitely recommend connecting with someone who has seen a lot of post op patients. Schroth certification would be good.
@@AlignTherapyUtah In my country we do not have diagnosis and treatment, so I will not find this person, even my surgery was in Turkey, thanks for your reply, I am from Algeria by the way
@@kenzarebiai7826 sorry to hear that. It is really hard to treat remotely. I am hoping to have something available online this year. Until then, work on strength and the suggestions in the video.
I am fused t9 to pelvis. I don’t have issues as of now. What is the bad outcome you spoke of?
Not a specific bad outcome. The levels above the fusion can wear out faster. To prevent that, keep your back strong!
I had my surgery less than two months ago my spine (lumbar)was fused from l4 to T10, the surgery took 3 hours and was a success (I’m almost 17 btw )
Please clarify what do u mean by the unfused part will wear out quicker ??
Thanks a lot overall informative video.
Because the fused area doesn't move, there is more stress above and below it. This makes the joints and discs have more wear and stress and they tend to have more degeneration later in life. It happens with all fusions.
I am getting pain when I lift the weight I to got the same operation what should I do? Please reply
I would suggest finding someone specialized in Schroth to help guide you through it. It can be complex and in person treatment is the best.
Can you please reply ? What degree of curvature did Emerson had before surgery?
I'm not actually allowed to share that other than what is in the video. Sorry
What about breathing?
Breathing is definitely a big part of it and would be taught in clinic. Thanks!
Does the scapula always goes on protraction and anterior tilt position on the convex side?
Thanks 🌹
Can you be contacted? I am from Sri Lanka

If I feel pain while doing the exercises, should I stop? I had the surgery 4 years ago
It depends on the kind of pain. Muscle soreness from exercise is fine. Pain right on the spine, not ok.
@AlignTherapyUtah I always feel pain if I go a few hours without lying down and I don't do exercises what should I do?
I had the same surgery can I do any back workouts if it doesn’t bother me?
No brother not at all. At least 1year
I would work with a specialized spine therapist.
@@faizanahmedtanoli it’s been 10 years since my surgery
@@AlignTherapyUtah okay what about of my surgery was years ago?
@@reyy717 it can still help!
I had a surgery 6 years ago and the indented side of my back is still the same, what should I do to get it back to normal?...please help i 'm from sri lanka 😣
I would focus on Schroth breathing exercises
Surgery should be the LAST option. Bodywork, especially for the tight erector spinae, and whichever quadratus lumborum is too tight do wonders to relieve scoliosis.
Sometimes it is necessary with curves that are progressive. Manual therapy can help but PSSE is really the only thing in the research, along with bracing, that helps stop progression.
I’m fused from t2-L5 and it’s been like 2 years and I have chronic back pain on the left side. Idk wtf to do anymore I put bio freeze on my back like 10x a day lol 🫠
Have you tried working with a PT trained in scoliosis specific exercises?
