Sadly, many doctors have patients believing they can return to unrestricted activity 6 weeks after spine surgery. Glad that Dr. Cyr is much more honest and explains why recovery from spine surgery actually takes MUCH longer.

Exactly. Thankfully my surgeon was realistic in his approach to my recovery. Did not start physical therapy until after 12 weeks.

My 12 year old had a bilateral single fusion L5 to s1 due to pars defect. She walked everyday everywhere then bad days she did treadmill. She is an athlete and at 3 months began low impact pt. Now at 4 month mark she is slowly starting back to volleyball at 50% - no serving or diving. Also beginning back to softball slowly. She’s doing amazing.
Maybe youth is on her side. I agree Dr does great job explaining.

First and foremost, it is extremely important to get a second opinion before you EVER agree to surgery. This is permanent, there is no going back. With that said, I learned the hard way. My PCP at the time and the surgeon he sent me to didn't give me a single alternative. I walked in to the office and was immediately told I needed surgery. It was scheduled and the Dr. did not see me again until the day of. The only other "consultation" I was given was from an assistant at his office, but it was left up to me to ask questions. Currently, I may be one of the worse case scenarios of what can happen if things are not done properly. I had a "true" 360 deg fusion at L5-S1. True meaning that I had it done anterior ( going in through the front ) and posterior ( flipping over and through the back ). 6 months after the initial surgery, I had to have an additional surgery because two screws were too long ( one was 5mm beyond the vertebra ) and one was loose. During those 6 months I was treated horribly by the doctors office. When I would go in and he would ask how I was, I said horrible. I felt decent for about the first 6 weeks, but then started to have radiating pain through my low back and legs. He insisted everything was "fine" and it couldn't be anything that he had done. I was scoffed at several times and when I got another MRI and it was reported about the screws being too long, he was pretty pissed at me. He said he would fix it "if he had too"! After that I vowed to get a different Dr. I spent 4 years looking for someone who wanted to, actually, make me feel better. It is surprising at how many doctors will not even touch you once they see the mess. I had to find not only a good surgeon, but goo pain management. It was essential to me even being able to walk. I have had 5 surgeries. I honestly thought I was headed for a wheelchair. The last one, they had to relieve the nerved at L4 because the stenosis was so bad. I doubt I am done with surgeries, but I can at least have some confidence in my medical team that I will be guided along well. I regret not doing my homework in the beginning so please, please, please ask a lot of questions and get multiple opinions.

I agree. I have had two fusions. I was never told by either surgeons or Pt's not to do flexion or extensios; neither to minimize my bending. The amount of damage physical therapists cause attempting to rehab people with spinal cord fusions is unbelievable. How hard can it be to train PTs to rehab patients with fusions. All back pain patients get the same exercises..

    • @sbkir
      @sbkir 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

And the amount of damage they do to patients (me) when have an unstable spine before surgery trying to "heal" you. There is no healing a 51 degree and a 36 degree curve with stenosis and slipping of the disc and congenital birth defects. Now, I have to deal with this or have surgery (big reconstructive surgery).

I’m so grateful to have had you as my surgeon.
As ancy as I’m getting to wanting to drive or have things go back to normal ( surgery’s only been a month ago) I want this to be a Success so I’ll focus on being patient with myself and giving myself grace and time to properly heal.
I know I’ll be able to start therapy and working on range of motion after I’ve healed more andi can’t wait for that day. For now, I’ll walk. Hopefully in time we can then start work on the rest of my spine but I can already feel a huge reduction in pain.
Every single day of my life I was in debilitating pain in my cranial area and thoracic area, and it’s gone. It’s crazy. I’m glad my father was able to see for himself the surgery was a success. ❤❤
Hopefully in time we will attack the thoracic, lumber and sacral vertebrae but I’m 110% pleased thus far. You gave me my life back.
If anyone is considering surgery, make the trip to Houston, he’s the best at what he does and I’m not the only one saying that.

I'm 72. Had s1-L5 fusion in February. Started walking in the hospital. Was in five days. Continued walking a lot. At 7 weeks my doc said I could resume swimming laps which I did. I asked him when I could golf and he said I could hit a small bucket at the range, but I'd feel it afterwards. Finally at four months I felt really good, stable, pain was minimal. I felt great for a week so I played 18 holes of golf. Shot 77 and it felt pretty good. At home I started mowing the lawn, cutting branches, just getting back to normal. Golfed again. Started to feel more pain. Swam a couple of days in a row and wow pain kicked in. Good news is I can walk two flights of stairs without grabbing the railing. Bad news is I think I tried too much too soon, who knows? I got none of the kind of advice this video conveys. If I'd seen it I may not have tried golfing and lifting even the relatively small amount of weight I had to do when cleaning up the yard and basement. Now I'm just hoping I didn't screw up my surgery somehow, as I have that burning feeling in my legs again, which had gone away. Thanks for letting me vent. Feeling frustrated in Boston.

Had my third surgery on my L5S1 on 12/13/21. Full lumbar fusion. It was the third surgery on this disc. Initial injury was in Nov 2011, and finally had a discectomy 2 months later. L4L5 suddenly is messed up less than 2mo later, and I had an XLIF. 11mo later, my L5S1 is ruptured again. Took 6 years to find a doc who'd work on me. The most ridiculous was an Ortho at Tufts in Boston said he didn't think it was in need of surgery. Revision discectomy in April of 2018. Failed injections many times, with one being a screw up by the doc, leaving my left hip and thigh with painful neuropathy. Fell late 2021, and boom, I need another surgery on L5S1. That was the full fusion. Scheduled for PT eval 7 weeks out. I have a history of long, painful recoveries and have been disabled since the injury unfortunately. I've never gotten to a place in PT where I feel stronger. It's always a situation where I'm in more pain chronically. Depression adds in that wrench that limits my mobility. Not a fun situation.

4/6 I had laminoplasty of cervical spine. Since , I have more numbness in my leg(when I walk) numbness in my arms and pain in my hands as well as very weak. (normal?)I also have pain in my lower back. It’s been almost 6 weeks and I still have trouble holding my head up to eat dinner. Surgeon says we will meet in another week and an X-ray will be done ( why not ct or mri?)I’m concerned if surgery worked and what determines surgery through the back or front?? I have met several people who all had surgery through the front and went back to work within one week.

Having spine surgery is a serious surgery. 50% of it success depends on the patients doing their own research as much as possible and asking questions to a point of being label nuisance. Don't forget you are not the only patient your doctor is dealing with so, read about your issues and ask questions. Get your house in order before going, get your bone stimulator belt ready, the right food that promotes bones growth an lots of walking around when back from hospital. Don't leave everything to your physical therapy, help by letting them know your fears an take it slowly.

I was almost 63 last year 2022 and will be 64 soon after my one year post opp date.
I was instructed to discontinue Meloxicam prior to surgery.
Does Meloxicam interfere with bone fusion?
Currently I don’t have evidence of bone fusion six months after surgery. I am currently 10 months post opp.
My arthritis in my hands and toes has become significantly inflamed since stopping the Meloxicam so naturally I’d like to resume taking Meloxicam however I’ve been told I shouldn’t until there is confirmation of bone fusion and maturation but again arthritis is taking a toll on my hands and toes.
I was prescribed an Orthofix bone stimulator that I received at approximately the 7 month post opp time frame likely because there wasn’t evidence of bone maturation on a CT that was performed a couple weeks prior to my return Dr. Visit on March 3rd 2023.
Thanks in advance for any input!

She can walk now but still hasn't regained her strength in her legs and at times still feels weak and is experiencing dizziness and headaches. The Dr. who took over her case after the surgery says he could not do anything for her. My mom still is in pain; she is not the same Grandma who played basketball with her grandson's and no longer could drive herself places. She can not turn her neck completely without turning her entire body to see you talking to her. She cannot get any insurance, and living in NYC, that's ridiculous. Can you please let me know some types of exercise so I can help her? I would really appreciate it

I’ve had 3 fusions t9 to pelvis. First revision was done incorrectly and he did not align my spine correctly. Second revision was for two broken rods (I wonder what the TRUE hardware failure rate is but we will never know). The most important thing is to find a good surgeon. A degree doesn’t equate to skill, experience doesn’t equate to skill. Exercise is your best friend. The more you sit, the more it will hurt.

Very helpful video, thank you for making it and sharing it. I’m not quite a week out of surgery, laminectomy at L4, L5 without fusion. As a dancer many moons ago, naturally, I want to stretch, and also, correct my posture. I’ve gained a lot of weight prior to surgery, from being immobile and stress eating because I couldn’t do anything. My surgeon and I spoke briefly about physical therapy and decided on aquatic therapy beginning with core exercises, once he says I’m ready. What would you recommend for obtaining good posture and what specific stretching exercises would you recommend? Thanks so much for any help you would extend me. Follow up for after surgery is about about one week away, and I want to be prepared with some ideas. Thank you again!
