Amazing looking at this historical footage and what took place at the centre of the square back in June 1910 as the city square still looks exactly the same in 2024. I would imagine that it must be the very last time any members of the imperial family in office visited St Polten. The abolition of the Habsbury monarchy in 1918 insisted by Woodrow Wilson was a mistake as it created so much instability in central and Eastern Europe in the following decades with its impact still being felt today.
Don't forget Georges Clémenceau, the President of the France, socialist who will the fall of the empire, by hate of the Habsbourg and by ideology, and going to the Second War !
@@Jacqueline-ec6zh One of the problems facing the Habsbury was that Franz Josef stayed on the throne for so long - he was actually known as the 'Stone Idol' by historians and he ran the empire with a mentality of an 18th century gentleman under the belief that it was his divine right to rule and at the same time, Europe was going through a rapid economic and political transformation as an inevitable consequences of the industrial revolution! Franz Josef also never really quite understood the 'Eastern Question' on Bosnia and Herzegovina which was former Turkish land under the care of Austria-Hungary after the collapse of the Ottoman control in the Balkans. The annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina - a decision very much supported by Franz Josef himself was a massive mistake as he saw it as a right of conquest but the harsh reality was that these two provinces were politically highly unstable with strong sense of national identity (just like Hungary). Having it annexed by right of conquest was like setting off the gun powder which finally led to a massive explosion. Had the Habsbury survived the war, I think Hungary would still go her own way soon or later but there was a good chance the rest would have form a much looser union with the Habsbury being at the centre as constitutional monarchy - a bit like the UK.
Those old mornarchies disappeared because they refused to change with the times. Stuck in their old ways and traditions. The younger generations of rulers such as Emperor Karl could have brought the monarchy into the 20th Century, but by the time he came to power it was too late. Franz Joseph was responsible for the fall of the Habsburgs. A good man probably but he was a 19th Century ruler living in a 20th Century world.
I’m an American of German descent. I had some ancestors who lived in Austria-Hungary too and as a lover of world history, I am so glad I was recommended this gem.
Thank you for this clip! That young girl probably told people for the rest of her life that she met and presented flowers to the Emperor. The world would be better governed if the monarchies were restored.
Yes, they were such a shining success, weren't they? Autocratic, corrupt, & inept. Oh but wait! I could be describing someone who currently dreams of many feathers in his cap.
Days in between wars - look how many wars Austrian monarchy during this emperor's ruling has fought ! And read what in the same town - my hometown - only some hundred meters away from this beautiful pictures at that time took place: Thousands of poor exploited factory workers died of hunger and tuberculosis. But sure, this video is very nice !
Wonderful! A Sovereign can be a gloriously unifying figure because they are above the vulgar polemics of party politics, that’s why I am so grateful to be living in a Constitutional Monarchy (the UK) which as a consequence provides political stability, no matter what insults the politicians throw at each other . Republics demonstrably fail to do this. Bring back Emperors of Austria!
As Francis Joseph said in 1910 when he was asked why with 80 yo he don't want to resign: I can't let my peoples to the politicians Several years we all understood with Renner dollfuss and Hitler what happens If unqualified politicians are in responsability.
@ Well said. Unlike politicians, anointed sovereigns have a responsibility to their people sanctioned by God and should never abdicate as God alone has the right to remove them from their office, by death. The modern world has almost no understanding of the sacred nature of their service and thinks of monarchs in the same way as a CEO of a company who can simply resign at any time. This attitude is deeply sad and impoverishing.
@@albertsmyth9616 That's great if the monarchs are responsible. But when a monarchy so often finds itself led by narcissistic dead weights like Henry VIII or Louis XV or Wilhelm II or Ivan the Terrible, those nations are stuck for decades and decades and decades with incompetence and tyranny - with no way out other than revolution or assassination. As for the idea that god sanctions such lunacy, god is either a criminal or a fiction.
@@albertsmyth9616 Apparently the majority of the earth's population no longer believe this. There is no perfect form of government but most folks believe they should at least have a say in how to live their lives. Seems reasonable, n'est-ce pas?

Love the feathers. No one can do pomp and ceremony like the Austrians Hungarians and such a quaint way.
Very nice video of the famous
people in our history 👍🇵🇭
Thanks for this film 😊
Just think, all those people are dead. Their pompe, ambitions, feathers, all gone to dustbin of history.

How absolutely beautiful. The world of yesterday.
Yes, the old world that went down in flames and thunder 1914-1918.
Thank you for a glimpse of a time long gone.
Thank you for showing this video when the world was not as utterly insane as it is TODAY
Not yet anyway but Four years later 1914 Insanity began
Very touching and thinking about that four years later the total disaster of WWI destroyed everything and changed the face of the world forever.

My grandparents were Austro Ungarian and very happy untill they were forced to join another country and German was not even their mother tongue.
Awesome. Great video. Croatia 🇭🇷 better off with Austrian Empire. Brilliant Fraz Joseph Kasier.
Everyone looks shorter than I imagined.

Because a Haydn tune was the basis for both the Austrian Kaiserhymn & the Germany's present-day anthem.

Franz Joseph was not a kaiser and the music that Is in the video Is not osterraich imny !
He was an emperior.
