I have a wonderful book, Photographs for the Tsar, a collection of photographs by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii, who was commissioned by His Imperial Majesty, Tsar Nicholas II to travel across Russia and take photographs. Mr. Prokudin-Gorskii was a pioneer in colour photography. His commission took place between 1909 and 1915. The photographs are from glass-plate negatives that he carried with him when he went into exile after the Bolshevik travesty. He died in relative obscurity, but the glass-plate negatives were rediscovered and published in Photographcs for the Tsar. They are quite remarkable. These photographs that have been colourised above are just as remarkable because many I have seen in other books in sepia tones or black-and-white and they bring that era of Imperial Russia vibrantly alive.
