Those who loved this film extract would equally love the Sissi trilogy about the courtship and marriage of Elisabeth and Franz Joseph. Romy Schneider, who was only eighteen when the first film was made is absolutely enchanting and beautiful and Karlheinz Böhm who plays Franz Joseph makes him human and shows his deep love for Elisabeth. The actress who plays Franz Joseph's domineering mother, the Archduchess Sophie is very good. The trilogy ends in1867, and takes considerable liberties with history but is beautifully shot in rich colour with lavish production values. For films over sixty years old they are still very enjoyable and capture something of the love between Elisabeth and Franz Joseph before the failure of the marriage and the tragedies that overtook them.

They deserve that lovely meal after working so hard continually. I’m serious, both were awake at 5am doing paper work. Not easy being an emperor, but they do get the best luxury in their off time.
Indeed! They took a lot of attention to details here. When this movie was filmed in the 50s, there were still people around who remembered the old imperial palace protocol in Vienna first hand and I assume that these people were consulted.
Fun fact: the anthem that we hear in the beginning was written by Haydn for the Habsburg emperor in Vienna. The Hohenzollern dynasty had another anthem, which, hohoho, had the same melody as the English still use for their anthem. The Federal Republic of Germany used the Haydn anthem. It was introduced after WWI. The communist GDR of East Germany used a completely new anthem and Austria didn’t want to have anything to do with the old Haydn melody.
It's well known that the British Royal Family,is German,or,after so many years, was German untill Elisabeth, now it's Greek. I assume if Greece wasn't a poor Balkan state, the name of the House would had changed,as with the Hannoverian king George I...
@@kimphilby7999 Except of course, the Greek royal family is as German as the British royal family. The Greek Royal house is that of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and originated from Denmark. After the King of Denmark died without male heirs, the cadet line of SHSG took over. By this time both branches were descended from the German House of Oldenburg. Royal protocol was that no one started eating before the sovereign (in this case Franz Joseph), and everyone had to stop eating once the sovereign stopped. Plus, he was the first one served. Franz Joseph was known for being a fast eater. Even state banquets rarely lasted longer than 20 minutes. If you were at the end of the table (last one served) you probably had one, maybe two, bites before your plate was whisked away. The other aspect of royal meals at that time was food would often arrive cold, as it was such a long way from the kitchen to the grand dining rooms.

When this was made in 1955 it may not yet have been widely known that Wilhelm's left arm was withered and paralyzed. In his life he and his government went to great pains to keep it as hidden as possible and among those who knew, even his eventual enemies such as the British royal family, it was considered ignoble to speak of it.
No, it was widely known. It really wasn't something that could be hidden, especially since he was fond of travelling and appearing in public. And it was even written about during his life time.
The part about the British pretending not to notice is completely wrong. Wilhelm had a terrible personality and when he visited England everybody delighted in trolling him by making pointed glances at his short arm, offering their left hands to shake (which would have forced Willy to reciprocate with his crippled left, which he couldn't). By the end of his visit, Wilhelm was so humiliated and embarrassed that he really went off back home about toppling the British Empire. No, the troll dissing didn't cause the War, but Wilhelm was so unstable mentally that he just couldn't properly handle the power he'd been handed.
@@farmalmta When he paid state visits to England, they went out of their way to please Wilhelm in the name of good relations between the two countries (even though they weren't allied). @@STScott-qo4pw Not true. She actually made at least four trips to France as monarch IIRC. Diplomacy with the French (and improving relations with them) was actually one of Victoria's biggest projects as Queen, she felt that the feud had to end if the British Empire was ever going to reach its full potential (not to mention the fact that both Austria and Russia were also becoming increasingly hostile). Her decision to swap state visits with Napoleon III after he became Emperor in the 1850s nearly caused uproar in Britain, but in the end it proved a very wise move (she also apparently joked that her grandfather George III would be FURIOUS with her, meeting with a Bonaparte). The Anglo-French alliance is in no small part due to Victoria and her determined efforts (along with some wise heads in both governments).
@@thunderbird1921 VRI made FOUR trips to France...?! Holy crud, I thought I knew Her reign very well. I gather I DON'T... The Kaiser will always remain a controversial figure throughout history. Is hard to sympathise a man like him with all his privileges and private education. A man born with a deformed left arm, all he ever wanted was his mother’s love and Empress Fredrick wouldn’t give him that she was to ashamed of him.
My understanding is that William II's mother was prevented from having any role in his upbringing by the ruling Prussian officers, not because she was ashamed of him.
Agent 3017 That is a fairy tale. Actually the injured arm was the fault of a British doctor Victoria had insisted on. She felt British doctors to be better than German ones. @@anna-elisabethbender3123 I’m aware Wilhelm was Queen Victoria’s favourite grandchild he was fond of her and you are right about the facts, I didn’t have the time to get into the details of the circumstances of his birth. He held her responsible for his father’s death when he was dying of cancer and she called upon a British Doctor to help him get better. Tell me if I’m wrong.
@@Agent-cz9rj No, you are not wrong. But still the fact remains that Wilhelm always speaks with love and highest respect about both his parents. The rest was war propaganda.

Under the order of Wilhelm II, Theodor Siebs standardized the German pronunciation in 1898. He released the first Standard German pronouncing dictionary titled "die deutsche Bühnenaussprache". @@liamfoley9614 Franz Joseph was cited saying "I am here to protect my citizens from politicians". The exact description of an emperors' purpose. From Wilhelm it is known that he was on the side of his "Landeskinder" more than once when "evil" capitalists tried to abuse their power.
@@jivenfields No, that only happens in Hollywood movies. Of course I don't know about your family, mine had telephone in 1901, a car by 1910 and in 1907 my greatgrandmother's sister opened the first electrical appliances store in my home town. On school schedules were foreign languages like English and French, which all in my family spoke. Before WWI, Germany had the highest social standards in the world and the population was the wealthiest.
Not sure I'd want to go the "empires of old" as such but there is a certain appeal to the old school feudalism (pre-black death) where you had a King who was top of the social hierarchy but who was reliant on nobles to maintain power. Those nobles in turn would have been dependent on lesser nobles or local landowners. Those landowners would in turn have been reliant on their tenants and workers to have a productive Freeholding. It is my understanding that after the Black Death an inevitable power vacuum ensued which resulted in society becoming overly top heavy (the great Imperial houses and Kingdoms) and the ruling elite becoming more distant from their people. So the French and Russian revolutions were somewhat justified but it is my belief that an urban elite replaced the old Imperial and Royal elite and continues to rule to this day. This elite I believe to be worse and more evil than those old Imperial and Royal houses as rather than having one person being at the top and holding ultimately responsibility and thus being ultimately accountable for the failings as well as taking ultimate credit for victories our present elite are hidden under the veil of democracy and working for "the people". The people actually meaning their family, friends and a large bloc of easily swayed "mob" so show they have "majority" support and thus the "minority" have no moral right to dispute their rule. In the past it was also more common for rulers and nobles to have their power usurped on the field of battle and this acted as a fatal and final judgement on their failings. These days we just have elections which are controlled by electoral commissions appointed by Parliaments which are controlled by political parties which are controlled by well-connected elites which give the majority of people enough food scraps to ensure their support and thus the intellectual and intelligent minority are forced to not just comply but not even imagine rebelling because the majority will inevitably support the elite who feed them the food scraps dressed as "freedom"" thus making armed rebellion a lost cause before its even begun and thus putting real free-thinking people in a worse predicament than in even the most brutal and repressive of Imperial, Royal and Communist regimes.

I think Netflix have tried to replicate this with "The Empress" as well but having seen both I can certainly say that the originals are worth a watch too

King Charles III is descended from Queen Victoria and King Chistian IX of Denmark though both his father and his mother so he's his own cousin. Actually, he is doubly descended since both his father and mother descend from Victoria and Christian.

everything so glamorous, stylish, so much open space, tons of people but not too crowded, looks amazing visually
Looks amazing, but half those people probably left the table hungry.
The Emperor's Waltz is one of my favorites..
why are old austrian films about the empire so popular amongst koreans. This is the third different film where I see many korean comments lol
The Austrians used to have a great Empire similar to the Koreans, now the Austrians and Koreans have been brought down to a Rump State. The Austrians considered themselves Germans for a long time and were overshadowed by their German Brothers, The Koreans once considered Chinese were always overshadowed by the Chinese, and now the Koreans don't consider themselves Chinese and the Austrians don't consider themselves Germans. Its more of a like, "We are in the same situation as the Austrians, the were so cool.". On another Note, Austria will likely loose independence in the Next Global Conflict, World War 3 if you will, the Austrians will see this conflict as a need to loose Neutrality, and Will give up independence and Submit to their German heritage they threw away and took for granted.

That is a fairy tale. Actually the injured arm was the fault of a British doctor Victoria had insisted on. She felt British doctors to be better than German ones. No, that only happens in Hollywood movies.
