5. If you were adopted by someone who was an Irish citizen, or eligible to be an Irish citizen, before 1996 you are automatically an Irish citizen regardless of where you were born. Your citizenship starts from the date you were adopted, which means that any children you have are also eligible for citizenship. Last year over 1000 people got citizenship through this route.

Question of clarification. If you can apply for Irish citizenship if "one or both of your parents was entitled to live on the Island of Ireland (Eire/NI) without restriction", does this mean if your parents were British citizens ,and so fit the definition of entitled to live on the Isle of Ireland without restriction; in this case NI, one can apply for Irish citizenship? This implies most of the UK can apply for Irish citizenship? Very curious.
It’s not only about a parent being entitled to live there, that’s just one of the necessary stipulations. It only implies it when you take that one rule out of context.

Skatz I am in the process of applying for my Irish passport because my Dad was born in Northern Ireland. I have watched quite few of your videos but don’t know how to apply for a passport for my English wife. Does she apply as a spouse of the holder of a Irish passport once I get mine
She can only do that if she’s been living with you in Ireland for a few years. But only one of you needs an EU passport for you to both be able to move to Spain.

This is a bit confusing, or I am just slow. 😕 Can you help me sort this out? My father was born in Ireland but immigrated to Canada with his family as a child. I was born and raised in Canada but now live in the USA as my husband is American. I am still a Canadian with a Canadian passport. My father did not become a Canadian citizen until he was ready for retirement age to collect his Canadian pension. He passed in 2002. So, if I understand this correctly, this makes me an automatic Irish citizen; therefore, I do not have to register on the Foreign Birth Register, I get to pass go and apply for an Irish passport?? Thanks!! Confused🤔
Nothing confusing there at all. The only statement you need is ‘My father was born in Ireland’. That means you can simply apply for your Irish passport. You’ll need your father’s birth certificate to prove he’s Irish, and your birth certificate with his name on it to prove lineage.
Hello, the online application asks me to send my British passport or a copy of my driving licence signed by a notary. I haven't filled it out yet but if the online application asks for an uploaded copy of my passport, why do I need to send my physical passport to them as part of the supporting documents?

That doesn’t make sense you’re right. Personally I’d just get a notary to sort out a copy of your driving licence if I were you. I didn’t send my UK passport when I did it.

If you have an Irish parent or grandparent it’s easy enough, or if you are a resident here it’s possible too. There’s no Golden Visa in Ireland so sorry it’s nothing to do with money.

No, but if they go and live together in Ireland for a few years the spouse can apply for citizenship that way.

My grandfather was born in Ireland so I can apply. My son wants to apply as well but he has missed it by one generation as it is his great grandfather. Can anyone advise. He lives in UK but wants to travel in Europe. Irish passport would help
Sadly he’s not entitled to an Irish passport, but if all he wants to do is travel around to gain life experience then I would suggest finding out which countries are in or out of the Schengen Area, and move in and out of them. Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, Serbia, Montenegro and more are outside the area. He can still spend 3 months at a time in the EU and use a Schengen calculator to make sure he doesn’t overstay. The world is his oyster if he has enough cash.

Perhaps if he had spent more time on research and less time mocking Irish people in his video he might then be able to supply the correct advice to people. Please do your own research rather than depend on him. About one third of his advice is incorrect.

So your son’s grandmother is Irish?
If so it’s a longer process of applying to be on the Foreign Births Register, then once he has the certificate he can apply for the passport

it can be a long process to get Irish citizenship. You can only apply after you’ve lived there for at least 5 years, then it could be another 2 years to get approved and granted.
If your intention is to move to Spain, why not go directly there. Whether it’s Spain or Ireland you’ll need a visa and the funds to make it possible.

Naturalisation is the only route to take if you have no recent ancestors. You’d need to live in Ireland for at least 5 years before you can apply and it can take 18-24 months before you have your passport.

This is all very interesting and like Eileen said also very confusing at the same time. So if i understand this correctly, my mother was born in Dublin 1931. she is still alive but has not lived in Ireland since around 1950. she does not have a Irish passport or any passport now. she did have a UK passport up to about 20 years ago. I was born in the UK, but I am still classed as an Irish citizen. All I need to do is apply for a Irish passport and have my mothers and my birth certificates. If this is correct, I'll get to work on it. Bless you. :)
Yeah. It’s actually more simple than that. Your mother was born in Ireland, that makes you an Irish citizen too so you can apply for a passport, regardless of whether she has a passport or not.
You just need to provide her birth certificate, your birth certificate, and if her surname is different on your birth certificate to hers, then her marriage certificate.

Someone married to an Irish citizen can apply if living on the Island of Ireland but I don’t see anything in the rules about other residents of the north.
@@youtoospain NI is also the state since the 1998 GFA, anyone born in or naturalised in NI can get an Irish passport, in fact it is quicker to get an Irish passport in Belfast than it is in Ireland.
