It's not only the hours of content, many of them are also fun games to replay. I do at least one playthrough per year of the GBA Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy games, and I'm always on the lookout for cool new romhacks like the FFTA one that makes monsters your only playable units (it's called Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced Battle for anyone interested). They're just so cozy to go back to.
My username was "Einherjar" on a public chatroom and this random person said "Riviera: The Promised Land is such a good game" so I married her 7 years ago... but my username was actually inspired by Valkyrie Profile...
OMG YES. MOAR. MOAR of these!!! GBA, Super Nintendo... I'm here for any and all of these videos. 45 mins too?!?! This is like a late Christmas gift. I love these games! I was the oldest of 4 siblings so my first 3 consoles (NES, SNES, and PS1) came from my mom finding them at yard sales. Theyd always come with a huge dusty box of obscure games. And Im so glad they did because it introduced me to RPGs and JRPGs and a hundred other games that I never wouldve found otherwise. This video is like looking through a box of these again. You're the best and have made my entire month with this video.
I hugely appreciate this comment haha. I’m planning on making more of these in the future but I have other videos like this as well if you don’t wanna wait.
@pixaafterdark9915 subbed and binging as we speak!. Love the content! You've done an excellent job so far improving your channel and quality of videos, esp for only being 18. I'm genuinely happy af to see the younger generations appreciating the older games and systems. It actually warms my little heart.
Happy to see you spoke about Tactics Ogre Knight of Lodis. I played this game when I was a child and it was one of the first games that showed me a dark story and I love it.
That reflection on your lazy summer was really thoughtful and made me feel nostalgic. I like this video for not being afraid of getting serious from time to time!
I have so much nostalgia for Sword of Mana. I remember playing it as a teen while waiting at the orthodontist. To this day I've never beat it, but always adored it. Literally the first mana game I think of when the series comes up.
Was my first mana game and sparked a mana obsession that lasted through my teen years. Sword, then hunted down legend of mana, sunk like 1k hrs into legend, then got into emulation, seiken densetsu 3 with the english translation patch, played that for months. Lost me when the ps2 entry came out. Was so hyped for it but never got around to getting it. Heard it sucked anyways. Easily one of my biggest series ever played. Up there with resident evil
The sprites aren't compressed for Riveria, the GBA sprites are just presented as is while the PSP sprites have a smoothing filter applied on them which usually makes things look a lot less detailed and also isn't the intended look so it can look wrong in a lot of cases since they were made to look as the sprites originally were.
Bro as someone who grew up playing GBA RPGs back when I was a teen in the 2000s, I HAAAATTEEE how the make UIs in PC ports. Like, I don't understand why they don't realize that the crisp and bubbling neo look clashes horrible with the pixel art. Pixel art requires pixel UI and I stand by that.
I played Shining Soul 2 with my best friend back when we were kids. And lemme tell you, it's a STELLAR co-op game. I really feel like it's 10x better playing co-op.
Thanks for bringing up Magical Vacation~ The game doesn't have many eyes on it, but those who do love it dearly~ Sorry to hear it wasn't a home run, but you gave it a chance, so many cheers to ya!
Played Harry Potter 3 on gba back in the day, and i loved playing this game sooo much. Beat it multiple times exploring every nook and cranny and collecting everything, bringing my Party to Lv99. Game's got it all.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is such a comfort game. Especially the way it starts, ugh. If I could go back in time and feel the way I felt for the first time all over again... EDIT: Oh snap @1:16 you show it haha, awesome! EDIT 2: If you like Strategy RPG's, and the Shining Games, theres a whole buttload of them. Shining Force 2 is by far my fave (its on the Sega Genesis), and Shining Force 1 got a remake on.... I believe its the GBA? Might've been the DS.
Holy smokes. I have been trying to remember the name of the Demi Kids game for months now! When you flashed it on the screen showing the scale from Cozy -> Obscure I was so stoked! Looking forward to seeing some gems in this video, and looking forward to grinding through Demi Kids again!
Been sick in bed for 5 days now binging video game reviews, your videos are by far the best, so fun to watch, well made, and hilarious. You’re the BEST. Peace and love
really enjoyed the personality that shines through in the vid, rather than it just being a review. it made it feel like a long convo with a friend, made the vid much more cozy!
Renting GBA games through GameFly and playing them on my Gameboy Micro on break helped me get through my 12 hour shifts back when I still did factory work.
Excuse me, LotR is NOT a cult classic. It is however A Classic. That's all. Great video btw, subbed the moment I realized you actually played the games (given you rushed some of them) instead of just reading it off articles on the internet and giving a very vague description of a game like other RPG channels here do. A little advice though, you're only 18 and is still pretty young. Try not to rush through your backlog cause you'll probably only get a half-baked experience, thus a half-baked opinion on a game. It'll also burn you out faster, really. If you think you're not having enough time with your backlog, I suggest you drop some of them entirely. Quality over quantity and all that. Don't feel like you're missing out, because honestly you prolly aren't. Have fun! Looking forward to more vids from you!
My coziest GBA RPG is Fire Emblem! I love that the character portraits perfectly encapsulate their personalities. And I think it has possibly the best writing of any game I've played.
Here I am, subscribing to someone closer in age to my kids than myself. Lot of the games you cover are from my childhood and I just love hearing people talk about them
Riviera the Promised Land is one of my all time favorite games and it saddens me that it largely gets overlooked and forgotten. So I was really happy when you brought it up in this video. Riviera just has such a comfy vibe. The game play is also pretty relaxing and borderline hypnotic. There is also a "sequel" called Yggdra Union which is also on the GBA. That game is one of the hardest games I've ever played, especially the GBA port which is merciless.
The Breath of Fire GBA Port does not only increase walking speed, it doubled the amount of exp received and tripled the exp recieved, making the game less way less grindy. It also added some small cutscenes and added the flee option. That makes it very worth it.
This is seriously perfect timing! Thank you! (I want to play a Final Fantasy-esque RPG, but those alternatives tend to have experimental/wonky gameplay systems….)

Shining Soul is such an oddity, mixing Shining Force's world with classic Phantasy Star Online gameplay. Such an oddity. XD Also, F*** YEAH TOMATO ADVENTURE! :D
I liked the video , and I know it’s a universal experience to feel old at 18, but as a 25 year old I feel like the crypt keeper listening to you call yourself old
The sword of mana bit made me cry. I felt that SO MUCH! I moved a lot, (40+ yimes in my life), and felt lonely for most if my life. Playing Sword of Mana and other gba rpgs... It felt like it so much.
Lazy days were the best. I have a simple memory of vacation from school that I sometimes think of. Waking up early making a bowl of frosted shredded wheat. Then, sitting down to play FF Mystic Quest, & being so happy to know I had hours to myself to play all I wanted.
Awesome vid, i definitely haven't heard of a couple of these, thanks! Though it's a bit outside the scope of this vid, since you mentioned enjoying tactical rpgs (and grinds), i'll drop a rec for Disgaea DS. That game is still one of the best of the genre, imo. Well, thanks again!
Final Fantasy 1 & 2, Sword of Mana, Legacy of Goku1 & 2, Final Fantasy VI, Mother3, Zelda Minish Cap are some of the Advance games I've played a lot in the last couple years!! Oh yeah, & Breath of Fire also!! Fire Emblem & Superstar Saga.
I love the gba so much, it was my childhood (ds didn’t come out until I was pretty much in high school) I’m 32 this year with a whole ass family of my own, rarely making time for the switch or ps5 but I am making time for an anbernic rg34xx and playing gba
I played a bunch of SMT, but I'm just now getting into persona. I'm still not sold on persona, but we'll see. P4 golden is only an 80 hour game... Great video though, good games and good vibes
dude!! shining soul 2 was everything to me growing up, i used to play all day with my friends via emulator coop, but we coudnt save so we play diferent classes and it was a blast!!!!
My favorite, Underrated, and obscure GBA game is Car Battler Joe. It has quite a following and getting a physical copy is quite expensive. But I highly recommend it. Its an RPG with Car building and car battle mechanics.
The best version of Lunar that you can play is for the PSP, it retains the beautiful animations while also having probably the best art out of any of the other ports.
Hey, Pixa! Came from a r/NewTubers post. I love how you do your videos, keep going! Leaving a sub~ I'm still figuring out how my channel will be, I created it this year, and you are inspiring.
Yggdra Union deserves to be in this list. Back when I played it, I have zero idea on what kind of game it is. I stick to it until few chapters till I realized the resemblance with Riviera. The emphasis on limitation yet very open to a bunch of strategizing, it easily became one of the best game I have ever played.
Surprised about Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban! I’ll admit I haven’t played it but I adores the GBC ones from that developer, and this one looked so similar. I’ll still probably load it up sometime but my expectations will be lowered a bit.
There are so many great GBA games I've only discovered in recent years that I wish I'd known about in 2005. All I used my GBA for was playing Friends of Mineral Town and Super Mario World 3, lol.
Yes, the GBA sound engine is perfection. I think I have to play Riviera. It looks amazing. I didn't know they made a Mana game for GBA either. Secret is an all-time fav for me... And the rest.
...I appreciate the liberal use of SoM music. That is probably why I won't like the GBA Mana game. The music is why I go back over and over to the SNES game.
I remember Summon Night! Iirc you can summon different kind of allies or something, I went with the robot guy. Never finished the game (which is something I do often)
I also got the robot in my first playthrough. Then in the second playthrough playing as the girl protagonist I got the female spirit. The yuri vibes were strong. It's a great game worth finishing if you're ever in the mood for it. I only wish there were alternative ways to get enemy recipes for the completionist in me because it's quite boring just sitting there until their weapons break.
This was a kinda fun video -- makes me wanna pull out by 3DS and play a few of these. Just one nitpick, tho (of a seriously unimportant nature): the phrase "cult classic" refers to something that is only appreciated by a kinda small or select audience, a "cult". LOTR, being arguably the single most successful work of fiction in the English language, probably cannot be called a "cult classic". That made me lol But great video; this comment is mostly for engagement, not criticism
Hey, I just found your channel, just watch this video, and I understand that you're 18, but I found it very endearing that all the games you're talking about our games that I grew up fixating on in different ways for sort of similar reasons. Hope life treats you well, you got yourself a new subscriber for what it's worth, and if you want some life advice, don't join the military
Wait, does Magical Vacation have a full fan translation now? The sequel (Magical Starsign on the DS) was officially localized, and I enjoyed what I played of it. I actually thought I remembered Pistachio being a character, but I double checked and he's only mentioned as a professor at the academy. Miss Madeline does reapppear, with the story revolving around her going missing and the protags going to search for her.
GBA as the best RPG system? Im actually not mad at that take lol. I grew upon on SNES and PS1 so I believe their better, but damn if GBA didn't have alot of the best, I think it and the switch are a solid 3rd and 4th for me, great video!
Shining Soul is a game that I would have bought back in the day just for the cover artwork. Also, i remember my lonelysummer. It involved a lot of swimming and super Mario Sunshine.
Great video, and even greater editing. I have a few newly made GBC and GBA games for you if you're interested. Dragonyhm and Zephyr's Pass for the GBC and Kien for the GBA.
i'm sorry to hear that. I've tried creating my own subtitles but just don't have the time/resources. If it helps, TH-cam subtitles have gotten a lot better and they seem to be pretty accurate to what I'm saying.
I started playing Magical Vacation last year, its been really great, I love the gameplay and the characters, but I think the game will get pretty dark later on, so I hope I dont get too anxious by it.
@@mikigzaielart hey, thanks for the interest. We stopped working on it a while ago but the creator is working to revive it. We had a playable prototype but I’m unable to find it sadly.
After doing my research I now realize how mad people will get that I know what Persona is but not SMT.
As punishment for this crime, you must conduct a multiple hours deep dive into the SMT series and its spin-offs.
@ZephynirI agree
You have the benefit of learning this early in your TH-cam journey
its okay bro, you're like 12. Most of those games are older than you.
You now have to play Ronde to lose your mind
I'm always impressed thinking about how they fit so many hours of vibes into just a few megabytes
It's not only the hours of content, many of them are also fun games to replay. They're just so cozy to go back to.
For the unaware, Magical Vacation is the first game in its series. It got a sequel on the DS.
It's called Magical Starsign. And it's quite good too!
My username was "Einherjar" on a public chatroom and this random person said "Riviera: The Promised Land is such a good game" so I married her 7 years ago... but my username was actually inspired by Valkyrie Profile...
That is an insane story and I’m so glad you commented this. Best thing I’ve ever read.
Best comment I've read.
I replied to a girl’s instagram story saying she looked like Reinhard from Legend of the Galactic Heroes. We’re engaged now.
Does that count as catfishing 😂
That’s crazy, s tier games as well. Ggs

you should watch hazel's video "cozy anime rpgs" as well
Happy to see you spoke about Tactics Ogre Knight of Lodis. I played this game when I was a child and it was one of the first games that showed me a dark story and I love it.
The algorithm has blessed you. I've been expanding my GBA collection recently, and this video was a banger. Appreciate the recommendations.
The algorithm brought me here. I hope to see more GBA videos in the future!
That reflection on your lazy summer was really thoughtful and made me feel nostalgic. I like this video for not being afraid of getting serious from time to time!
I knew your next vid was gonna be fire. Great video man.
I have so much nostalgia for Sword of Mana. I remember playing it as a teen while waiting at the orthodontist. To this day I've never beat it, but always adored it. Literally the first mana game I think of when the series comes up.

really enjoyed the personality that shines through in the vid, rather than it just being a review. it made it feel like a long convo with a friend, made the vid much more cozy!
While I wanna cook you for some of these hot takes, I really enjoyed this video and it has great picks! Subbed.
Thank you for validating my nostalgia for the GBA, young man.
Renting GBA games through GameFly and playing them on my Gameboy Micro on break helped me get through my 12 hour shifts back when I still did factory work.
I respect the hard work brother. Glad you could enjoy these games.
Excuse me, LotR is NOT a cult classic. It is however A Classic. That's all. 10/10 video, loved it! keep em comin friend :))
LoTR trilogy wins 17 Oscars, is now a “cult classic”. Now I feel old.

I like to put this video on before going to sleep, thank u, it's very relaxing
Awesome! As a 36 year old I’m rediscovering GBA games and it’s so much fun!! Thnx for the list !
Last day of 2024 and it brings such a banger of a video.
Very grateful this popped up
The Breath of Fire GBA Port does not only increase walking speed, it doubled the amount of exp received and tripled the exp recieved, making the game less way less grindy. It also added some small cutscenes and added the flee option. That makes it very worth it.
Nice vid bro.. 😊
I remember playing most of these games due to boredom.. it's somewhat nostalgic seeing someone reviewing this old games.. 😅
This is seriously perfect timing! Thank you!
(I want to play a Final Fantasy-esque RPG,
but those alternatives tend to have experimental/wonky gameplay systems….)
For those wanting to play FF1, FF2 and FF4, the GBA is actually not the best way to play them anymore. You actually have 2 choices
FF1
- For the Spell-charge magic system gameplay: Either Wonderswan Colour, PS1 or Pixel Remaster versions will work, since they all have the same content and fixed the majority of the bugs plaguing the NES original. I think the WSC and PS1 versions look better than the Pixel Remaster personally, but in terms of content they all offer the same.
- For the MP-magic system gameplay: The PSP version is the only one that has all the content in one package, and easily looks the best with its beautiful higher resolution pixel art. The PSP release added a new exclusive dungeon called the Labyrinth of Time, and it still has all the additional content from the GBA version too, so you can do one playthrough on the PSP edition and see everything.
FF2
- PSP version easily, same deal with the graphics, but also has all the extra content FF2 ever got in one go. This time the PSP exclusive added dungeons came in the form of the Arcane Labyrinth.
FF4
- PSP version easily, as it has all the GBA bonus content as well as both sequels in one package.
So.. psp version all the way, thanks
YES!! I'm playing Leg of Goku II and I'm so glad it's featured here. I wish there were more Dragon Ball RPG games in this style
Same. I was hoping Kakarot would be like LoG 2 and 3/ Buu's Fury. Sadly Kakarot disappointed me
This was very well done, thank you!
Instant sub. Love the content, love your vibe, keep doin what your doin.
You my good sir have got a new subscriber, I’m digging the vibes of these games and you’re whole vibe!
Excellent video! I downloaded all of these to my rg35xx sp, subbed and looking forward to more!
Dude I didn’t expect much from this video but editing and production my man 👌 good stuff ur channel gunna pop off
omg thank you! I played a lot of Riviera back in the day, but never beat it. I hadnt been able to recall the name!
Your line of inquiry and whole approach here is top notch. So much prep work is evident, but it’s a great way to end 2024.
Very funny 🤣
Loved every second of it
Love your narration style :) have a sub!

Immaculate vibes from the video again. Well done good sir
I remember playing shining soul 2 and boy that game has a looot of class options

It's a great game, bro !!!

im a huge tomato adventure fan, and followed most of the localization for the english version. i had no idea there was an unreleased GBC version!
This young fella gets it. Hey, you’d probably really dig Bitmap Books’ new Pixel Book on the GBA.

Just one nitpick, tho (of a seriously unimportant nature): the phrase "cult classic" refers to something that is only appreciated by a kinda small or select audience, a "cult". LOTR, being arguably the single most successful work of fiction in the English language, probably cannot be called a "cult classic". That made me lol
But great video; this comment is mostly for engagement, not criticism
@@gregmark1688 LOL I’ve been using the phrase “cult classic” wrong for years. Thanks for the correction.
I think i found someone who also got into a huge RPG backlog 😍
Great video! But you have to right your Shin Megami Tensei wrongs, NOW.
Or when you get the time, you know.
It's funny you mention that because i'm binging Atlus games right now. Wait a couple years and i'll redeem myself.
@ Thanks for commenting so fast lol. Yeah, I just bought Persona 3,4, and 5 on my ps4, so I can play them for the first time LEGALLY, you know.
I very been in the GBA games rabbit hole for a month now
It feels cozy
I really needed this!
Shining Soul 2 GOBLIN FORT OST is the most beautiful thing I’ve heard in my entire life bruh
Its so relatable to love games but never beat them lol
GBA as the best RPG system? Im actually not mad at that take lol. I grew upon on SNES and PS1 so I believe their better, but damn if GBA didn't have alot of the best, I think it and the switch are a solid 3rd and 4th for me, great video!
I'm the one prisoner of azkaban fan and I just want to say I collected all the cards in that game pre internet
Shining Soul is a game that I would have bought back in the day just for the cover artwork. Also, i remember my lonelysummer. It involved a lot of swimming and super Mario Sunshine.
Sir you have great tastes. Atlus games plus hylics. Also yeah ff5 is great. FYI i have played that Harry Potter rpg.
Baldurs Gate for the GBA is a gem too
I still play,
Shining Soul 2
Final Fantasy 4,5,6 Advance
Summon Night SwordCraft Story 1 and 2
At times, still had fun.
Watching this video and having two already loaded in my EmuDeck... and then looking up shining soul 1 and 2 like oooooh 😅
Great video, and even greater editing. I have a few newly made GBC and GBA games for you if you're interested. Dragonyhm and Zephyr's Pass for the GBC and Kien for the GBA.
Oh yeah I’ve been following Dragonhym for a while but Zephyr’s pass looks new. I love them both lol.
nuuu i forgot how much i loved your videos! now that i'm disabled and the subtitles sucks on youtube idk if i can continue to watch you!
i'm sorry to hear that. I've tried creating my own subtitles but just don't have the time/resources. If it helps, TH-cam subtitles have gotten a lot better and they seem to be pretty accurate to what I'm saying.
cool to see some SNK pixel art here and there
I started playing Magical Vacation last year, its been really great, I love the gameplay and the characters, but I think the game will get pretty dark later on, so I hope I dont get too anxious by it.
Where can I get my hands on that Earthbound fan game you mentioned? Would be cool to see your creations in that game :) Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
@@mikigzaielart hey, thanks for the interest. We stopped working on it a while ago but the creator is working to revive it. We had a playable prototype but I’m unable to find it sadly.
