  • HP's 17" ENVY at its current price is a great device for the right person or family. Does it suit you? You're about to find out.
The link below is to the HP Store.

This is tied to me and helps grow the channel financially with a small kickback from HP as well as lets them know if i'm worth their time as a reviewer. Integrity is key so if you don't like the laptop, returning it means I didn't do a good job for you and there's ZERO compensation which is how it should be.
For you benchmarkers out there, the CPU was good fr 1100 in CB20. I've always had a soft spot for efficiency so I like this intel 10nm processor.
Temps rarely hit 70c on the CPU and that was typically only after unlocking the GPU thermals. At that point the GPU would hit 80c at the max. Ambient temp of 74F.
XTU will not load with this CPU as it's currently not compatible and ThrottleStop modifications to the wattage and voltage do not comply.
To the touch that laptop as a whole was way cooler than anything else I've used in recent memory.
Bottom panel removal requires the rubber feet removed to reveal phillips head screws as well as two exposed T5 screws near the from. It's easy and I didn't come close to damaging the rubber feet strips. I suppose I could offer a video showing how to do this as one doesn't seem to exist but it's actually really easy to do so i'm not sure if this is a waste of time. The cooler is large for the hardware and has two fans. It's overkill to be honest but I like it this way.
I really enjoyed using this laptop. it was easy to use, very quiet, built too good for its price and the display was pretty. There's a lot to like on the base model shown in this video and I hope you like it!

Hey Bob. Thanks for the awesome review. It is very convenient to have a unit in the house for the family. I really like the recent price to performance ratio that HP has got going on. I've had 4 HP laptops over the course of over 8 years, and other than a couple of battery replacements, they are all still fully functional.

I currently own an HP 17" Envy that is many years old. I had replaced the HDD with a 500GB SSD and because it has an i7 CPU, 16GB ram and Nvidia 2GB Video card, it works pretty well for my needs. This seems like a good laptop for a nice price. I would probably like to move up to the 4K Video since I watch a lot of videos and real 4K is incredible! Thanks for the video.

Great Review. I got my wife the 2019 Envy 13, and the display (400 Nit), speakers (the best ever), keyboard, build is great for the price. Sips just 1.5 watts total at idle! 10 hours youtube streaming at Max brightness. Only gripe is the plastic trackpad.

Looks like a very good and flexible work laptop.
With up to 32gb ram, ssd, ok graphics card, 17inch screen, nice keyboard with num pad, and quiet ( a very underatted feature ) it would be great for AutoCad and other office applications where built in graphics aren't sufficient. With some light fortnite on the side after hours.
If there was an AMD in there we'd be raving about this.

Hey, Bob, have you heard anything about the Omen 2020 17 inch? So far HP have released the 15 inch Omen 2020, and, obviously, the Env 17ty, but I'm still on the edge of my seat about the 17 inch Omen, since I was about to buy the 2019 one, but better cooling + potential AMD CPU in the 2020 one sound thrilling, although I'm interested in RTX 2070 and it might only get paired with Intels?

Hey Bob great review, I want to add some my review experience of this like laptop.
I have the 15' pavilion with same chassis style ,keyboard mousepad ... (15-cw00xx).
I have it like 2 years with the ryzen apu 2500u , I can say it's a very good laptop all around, I bought it like 550€ at media markt Belgium, great price ! , so the screen is very good 1080p 60Hz ips matte +/- 250nits, keyboard amazing, webcam amazing ,mic amazing , speakers very good for the size of it specially tweaked by bang and olufsen, I tried it generic windows but it sound dull lmao. Just 3 downsides , 1 :mousepad is plastic and the plastic silver paint did come out at the edge of the mousepad (harsh use I guess ), 2 : Well I do game on it while pumping up the tdp(manually "ryzenadj" )but it has a mediocre thermal solution, enough for stock tdp tho. 3 : it has nvme ssd drive "stock version" i wanted to add normal ssd ,there is a place next to battery for additional ssd but laptop came without Instal bracket nor the necessary cable to connect with the motherboard. Have to buy separate for like 60 ish € ....
Just last thing tearing apart of this laptop for the first time is a pain in the a$$ hidden screws all over the place...
Well I guess I'll pass it down to my little sister when I will buy a gaming laptop, If it still survives 😂😂😂

No doubt about tearing it down I talked about that in the description and I have a bunch of footage of it should I need to make a video. Once you realize the screws are under the rubber feet texted pretty easy.

imagine this with ryzen 7 4600 H, i think it would be a 100$ less, and maybe same or better performance, it would be perfect for me.

Ryzen 7 of any variant with integrated graphics, and HP would have the nerve to spec a worse display screen than the intel variant smh.

imagine if they made 4 core 8 threads with good IGPU it wouldnt even need a GPU and had thunderbolt o wait its AMD........gna have to wait till USB4....which is probably why they didnt bolster the IGPU.....currently bc no thunderbolt option for external GPU+ryzen......aka The dream with a 2-3 heat pipe 2 fan setup with no heat wasted on a GPU die......well well....

I bought a maxed out one 4 years ago it's still decent. I actually gamed on it a lot more than I should have.... I bought it because I didn't have the room for a PC in my apartment and I was working from home more often

I have the 8th gen version of it and I have a problem (and I heard of other people too) with the microphone. I'm on skype and on the other side they can't really hear me. It was quiet in the room but it sounds like there is a background noise going on. I don't know how to fix this problem. Otherwise I love my laptop. Upgraded some stuff inside, ssd, hdd, ram and it runs super, sound is pretty good.

If you think this 320 nit screen is dim you should compare next to the tier down of screens that are on most of the 15.6 inch envys,, this one is wayyyy brighter,, i did a comparison with this same laptop to my other 15.6" envy x360 10th gen i7 spec'd laptop 1080p,, whoaaa,, who knew 100 extra nits would be such a difference..Also the colors on most of 15.6" envys are very flat,, this one has much more saturated colors

I need a family laptop; understanding this is NOT a gaming laptop, can it handle Fortnite @ at 60mhz or close to it? Our foster kiddos all play it & I simply don’t want to build another rig with the continued supply chain disruptions and the pricing instability. Any input is greatly appreciated! Be safe, thanks for the hard work you put into your reviews.

Thanks. I have the 15" from a few weeks ago, maxxed out everything, and it's pretty amazing for what you said (not family laptop, but it can run some business programs, design, even video editing pretty well). Also it's funny when I'm carrying it and someone thinks "ultraportable!" and tries to pick it up 😂 *The* unforgivable (and I'm using my old Toshiba now because ...the old Toshibas are great) is that LARGE INCH-THICK BOTTOM OF THE DISPLAY that ruins my experience. What the H*II is that even supposed to BE?! UGH! The bezel's okay, but the "HP branding LANDING STRIP" is ...not. It's not okay. There are other foibles (no numlock light on keypad when numlock's on; *function keys are just for "media"* and nitpicky things), but it's fast, the thermals are great (wish the 15" had the 17" lid design - I prop it up at a desk)... but I doubt I'll buy HP again with that ridiculous looking OVER-1" awful evil bottom strip on the display. 😱
