That was pretty much the normal voice acting and story for games of the time. I think you guys have just been spoiled by Hollywood levels of production in games. Far Cry 1 is still the best of the Far Cry games. For me anyway. Although, Far Cry 3 was pretty awesome.
Agreed, I still think it is the best in the series! I miss the time of semi-open world levels, where they don't reuse the same areas again and again and again and again.....
I finished this on expert, four times. love the shit out of this game. Why? Idk. I think it's a mix of AI that actually shoots back, and the care with which you need to navigate the levels. You can't just run in like an meathead and gun down scores of enemies. You actually have to be careful. Ammo management, health management, everything matters, or by the end of the level, you'll be on your last 10 AR bullets and a smidge of health. And believe me, it takes grit to finish the levels when in such a situation. I just played Far Cry 3, and I quit 20% in due to the ease of taking down enemies. It's just not challenging enough. It feels like they are designed to be beaten by me, whereas Far Cry 1 , it feels like I'm fighting for my life. I love having one foot in hell when I play video games. I can't get that shit in real life after all.
I agree, i love far cry 1 just like you do, i speed runned it on realistic in just 67 minutes BUT, stamina management is ass, and the enemys can shoot you very accurate in camps, just like the first level, and fort (when you need to take that card to destroy that armory) and etc. I love the game but the AI did a terrible job with tenners and camps..the enemy shoots you 100% accuratr throught that and you can t even see it...

I'm a military guy. I enjoyed the beginning of Far Cry 1, but just like with Crysis, when the aliens and weird experiments appeared, I stopped playing it. My favorite is actually Far Cry 2, as it is completely different from Far Cry 1. It's basically a simulation, and you have to like that kind of thing to enjoy it. But in saying that, and out of all the Far Cry games that I have played, three is the best. Because it was the original formula before it got copied so many times, like with the Assassin's Creed series. In other words, it is fine if you have not played past installments, but if you did, you're basically treading the same water.
the cheesy and highly gameplay driven story with bad voice acting is a feature, not a bug imo.... Dang the gameplay in this game. you gotta hide or get shot at from 2 miles away sometimes, the ai is nuts
Very interesting watching a 2023 take on the OG FarCry. Back in the day we were baffled by the sheer amount of foliage! It set the standard that was picked up in Crysis in 2008. But: For us old school gamers coming from Half Life and Quake, we never saw the damn enemies hiding in the bushes :) I set the game down once the Aliens hit, because I couldn't cope. I still have nightmares about that experience and it was at that point where I thought: there can be too much realism in games. Edit: really like the TH-cam Thumbnail you got going here 😄
I was just playing Farcry 6 and looking at the shorelines and river banks the water is just a hard edged line at a distance. Came to a Farcry 1 video just to make sure I wasn't misremembering the water in Farcry 1 being better. It legitimately was better in FC1.
5:34 - See this is one of the most infuriating sections of FC1 if you play the steam 1.40 version, because you have to climb up a ladder to get where you are now, and as you do, a helicopter with a minigun spawns in front of you, and theres a guy with a mounted minigun behind you. This game is very clunky with ladders and stairs, and getting off ladders can be very finnicky, meanwhile you have 2 miniguns instantly pelting you with 100% accuracy from both sides. It doesnt help either that the ladder takes you to a completely exposed position. Most attempts they would kill me before I even got off the ladder. Is it doable? Sure, I got through it eventually. But I never felt like it had anything to do with my strategy or skills, I just had to try until I the game decided to let me off the ladder fast enough and the 2 minigunners didnt start shooting the instant my head was above ground, and I actually made it behind some crates where I could fight one of them at a time. To me, a game that essentially forces you into save scumming until you get the result you need is not hard, its random. Any indoors section is a joke compared to this, because you can just bait the enemies into coming through the same door over and over while waiting for them on the other side. Meanwhile this bug (and yes it is a bug) has a sniper with 100% perception and 100% accuracy kill you 5 times from outside render distance until you semi-figure out where he is and bypass it. I get that you might enjoy this, but comparing it to Elden Ring is really weird to me because 1: Elden Ring was made to be difficult and when the game kicks your ass, you actually get the feeling that you need to do better, and 2: This is not what Far Cry 1 was like until the 1.40 patch broke the game. Theres an unofficial 1.41 patch that fixes this, the GoG version has a patch that somewhat fixes it, and the FCAM mod tones it down a bit too. Other than that, downgrading to version 1.33 is the "real" FC1 experience, thats what the game was meant to be like. In that version you can still get some equalent of the same difficulty by setting it to the hardest setting, but in the broken version there is pretty much no difference between the easiest and hardest difficulties
