Here's A COMPLETE Tour Of My 1977 Mack CF-600 FIRETRUCK

- I bought a 1977 Mack CF-600 from the Arcadia, KS fire department for $3,000. This old truck must have been mind blowing when it was new and it's still wildly cool today. From the huge 6 cylinder Mack diesel engine to the PTO driven pump the drivetrain still puts in work. The emergency lighting and sirens still hang with the new stuff. And there's enough storage to move out of a small apartment. We're going on a complete tour of the fire engine and showing you everything you need to know about it.

The Gold Bulldog represents the fact the truck is built completely of Mack components from chassis to drivetrain and body
And since it has the ENDT-engine, the engine is acctually a Scania engine
@@megu_weeb mack is owned by volvo trucks isn't it? So we have come full circle
@@fritsmolenaar05 scania is Saab. Don't know what engines volvo trucks run. Probably volvo made.
No , his is a Maxidyne motor. Dont know which one though.
@@geraldlafleur7776 probably a 350 mack to run the pump. they take a pile of power.
I can't believe this is $3k. What a classic Mack, just beautiful. You can go to any car show with that and everyone will want to see it.
And climb all over it. The kids and the kids-at-heart.
Also try to get Historic plates for it. Insurance for it will be cheaper.
It kind of makes sense why it's that cheap, it's at the end of it's life as a fire truck, so very few departments would want to rely on it being in service. And selling it to a 3rd party, there's not much the average person can do with it short of chopping it to heck or putting a new body on it. It's a shame, but there's really not much use for old fire trucks like that.
@@Tracert-mc1hu there may be old small.towns with volunteer FDs that could still make use of it, but yeah I agree that is why it is so cheap. If Mack built a truck with materials, style, and quality of this unit today, I imagine the cost would be astronomical.
Not many people can afford the space to keep them.
I think we have the original Streamlight that goes with that mount, I would have to look in storage, If so, you can have it when you get the Title. I do think it needs a new battery though. We had others we would grab before calls so we never used that as it was always a backup if those went down. If you have any questions at all, you have my number, feel free to call and ask!
I have yet to meet a Streamlight boxlight that didnt need a battery! Lol
@@keithmack2368 So true LOL, In the future we want to upgrade to the new LED Streamlights, but for now the old girls work just fine!
Luckily, the batteries are available, cheap, and dead simple to replace. You can get new ones for less than 20 bucks on Amazon. Just be sure to get the right size tab connectors on the top. The same battery is used in emergency lights and computer UPS systems, but can have a wide or narrow tab.
@@porcelainthunder2213 a quick search on Streamlight’s parts site shows that they still sell the battery for the Firebox/Litebox series as well as all the major parts to completely overhaul one!
JR should make a Watch JR go tee shirt with the Arcadia fire rescue image on the back, or vise versa. Like on the truck. Than donate some money off the sales of the tee's to them. Just an Idea. What do you guys think?
I’d buy one 👍
Great idea
I was thinking same thing !
This needs to happen.
great idea
Some people have fire extinguishers, JR has a fire truck.
That this is Beautiful! I could stare at it all day. It looks like it was cleaned and polished often. What a steal for $3k
JR is gonna go buy a P71 next and then tell the city he doesn't need to pay taxes anymore.
WatchJR... become his own Township! :)
I'm pretty sure he knows a Florida Man who might own a P71? OK, maybe 20 or 30 of them? 🤔 😅

Love the Mack CF cab engines... My old station had two of them... Both open back, not closed back, cabs... And I rode the beavertail on both many times... Lots of fun!
The Coolest Purchase yet. A1. Please keep this. Not for me but firefighters love when people save the historic pieces. Seriously puts tears in there eyes. Keep it a museum piece or use it for modern day. Enjoy it either way.
The fog lights are Per-Lux and yes you can buy any piece of them at just about any truck stop ,truck dealer ,and some auto parts stores
Clps or clips , clearence and parking lights
Turn rm into. Led Conversion so much for power save
I think you need to find a local track and start a TG style Lap Time Leaderboard with all these projects you have. And I mean everything. Hoverboard, aztec, firetruck, forklift, that girls car you did an oil change and pad slap on, bronco, C5, MCs. EVERYTHING.
I was a driver engineer from that era. New engines of that era went new for $ 70 to 80k. I drove a pretty well optioned American LaFrance 1250 gpm. The pump on this truck does not run on a pto. There is a pump transfer case built into the bottom of the pump.. To use most of these you would set the trucks parking brakes. Then put transmission in neutral . Then select pump position on the pump selector in the cab. This would disengage the driveshaft from the transfer case to the trucks rear axle. And engage a gear train internal to the pump to drive the pump. The trucks transmission would the be placed into whatever gear selection required by the manufacturer and the transmission would lock in that gear. The driveshaft from the transmission to the pump would run the pump but was disconnected from the trucks rear axle when pumping. Be careful not to run the pump dry as you will damage it with no water. Hopefully you can find some hose and get it pumping. There are clubs that get together with antique trucks, some much older than yours. They show them off and pump them at events they call musters.
That was built in Allentown, PA. The MACK CF was a workhorse of a fire truck. It is built like a tank. The Federal Q2 on the front bumper takes an enormous amount of amperage to run FYI.
That unit originally had an open cab and was converted to a 4 Door. Let me know if you have any pump operation questions, I am a firefighter in New Jersey with a lot of experience on pumps. Looks like it is a 1500 gpm pump with a 500 or 750 gallon onboard tank.
Yup, I was told it's a 750! I can't wait to fix the Q2 💯
@@WatchJRGo If you want a pump primer on how to, let me know. I can also help you find some accessories like ladders and hose. Awesome buy!
750 Gallon Tank, and 1000 GPM Waterous Pump.
Some nomenclature pointers: The hard rubber hose on the reel we called a booster line. Maybe discharge 5 or labeled booster. VERY handy because it can be charged (pressurized) on the reel and great for small fires, dumpsters, grass fires etc. Scrounge up an adjustable fog nozzle for that and you can use it too! The packings in the pump dont like to be dried out but the pump cant be wet and frozen either. Read up on the pump so that it does not get damaged. My memory tells me that Mack used HALE pumps. Mack was a rare fire engine manufacturer in that they built the whole truck save for maybe the pump itself.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood. Best wishes from Toronto, Canada.
That truck will be great for local parades, if that's your thing. Or car shows, truck shows, local school events...very cool truck.
American Beauty/Work of Art. Please keep it for Parades / Movie Rentals.
ceramic coat it for that lasting shine to top it off.
this was going to be my suggestion as well. film industry uses era-appropriate vehicles often. that with a mix of show/parade appearances, you could offset costs; possibly even make a little profit.
What I love about Firetrucks is they're always well taken care of and even 40 years later they're still bright and shiney.
Hey if your interested I have radios nozzles 2 1/2 and 1 3/4 and a SCBA I have in storage let me know if you want anything.
You need to drain out all the water from the hoses and tanks. Or run some rv antifreeze thru the system so it doesn't freeze up in the cold weather and while driving it. You'll blow out or crack the pump and castings if you don't.
Here in Germany we drain the pump whenever it is not in use for exactly that reason. The tank however is less critical for several reasons. If your garage is heated (which it usually is for fire stations here) it won't freeze while it is in there. Out there it would take quite a while for this amount of water to cool down and freeze, and last but not least other than the pump, the tank usually has some air between the water level and its ceiling, leaving room for expansion. But draining the pump is essential if there is a risk of freezing, I agree. :-)
Interior is clean.... "Never Smoked In"
My dad started his career as a firefighter in a truck not too dissimilar to this, cool to see all the ins and outs of it!
first time I've seen the word dissimilar.
@@dylanlam6430 .... Yeah, but I've come across words like that before ;
My volunteer department use to have a old mack cf we bought brand new. It currently still in Virginia and being used with its 3rd department still running strong
This would truly define the expression, "I feel like I was hit by a Mack truck." This is a Mack through and through. The Mack Daddy.
Mack Daddy is the most American thing I ever heard.
JR at the DMV: "Yeah, I need to register my fire truck?"
With that many vehicles, Kansas DMV comes to JR..😀
Love the old Mack trucks! My grandfather worked for them for many years turning crankshafts on a lathe.
In Hagerstown?
That truck was originally serving the town I grew up in, Sun Prairie. Arcadia is just a few hours away, it makes sense they picked it up, just amazing how long it remained in service.
Definitely a parade truck and car show truck sweet firetruck brings out the little kid in all of us!!
I’m a big fan of anything built in 1977 ‘‘twas a very good year 🚒🇺🇸
Me too. Born in 77 but was technically "built" in 76😀
@@longjohn77😂
This might be the best purchase you have made since starting your channel.
I like how you have the original fire logo
You should run that in the local parade this summer It be cool
The truck has always had a 12 volt electrical. Originally it used 2 6 volt batteries in series to equal 12 volts.
I hope we get to see a video or two of you driving this in a few parades this summer.
It is nice to see the old Mack Fire Engine. Your "new" Fire Engine that was built in 1977 was refurbished by Custom Fire Apparatus in Osceola Wisconsin in 1989.
When the engine was in 1977 by Mack it looked different. The cab rear area was open with a gate on each side to get in and out of. The pump panel was set up differently. The rear box was also different.
In 1989, Custom Fire rebuilt the whole truck. They started with taking the whole rear box off and putting a new box and water tank on. Next, they rebuilt the 1000 gpm mid shaft Waterous pump, the pump is a mid shaft not a pto. Finally, they enclosed the rear crew cab. NFPA had made the rule that any new or refurbished fire engine, truck, or other fire apparatus must have enclosed crew cab.
If you want some information about your engine, you should contact Custom Fire.
The Arcadia Fire Dep't certainly took good care of it and maintained it well.
That enemergency engine stop in diesel engine is normally air flap to cut out air. Diesel engine can run away with its own engine oil, so fuel cutout wont help.
I was a firefighter for 31 years we had 8 of these MACKS when I got on the job drove them quite a bit tour rig has a bunch of upgrades nice purchase! ENJOY !!!
CL LPS is Clearance Lamps. Basically parking and the cool Bullet Lights are on that switch. Former trucker here and that was one of my first questions when I started driving trucks.
Was gonna say the gold bulldog means it has an entire Mack drivetrain 👍🏻 Bulletproof!
You scored with that truck! It is beautiful!
Thank you to all the men that fought fires and saved lives and kept that truck running so well. Bet the oil levels and grease fittings were well maintained. The men that ran that truck truly served their community and risked injuries large and small every day.
From a Former CF operator.......The gold bulldog means it has a Maxidyne motor. (Mack’s superior motor). The horn ring shows who the rig was originally built for. The clps switch is for the clearance lamps. The reservoir for the windshield washer is in the passenger side cab door-it may be empty. There are plates on the body just past the pump panel that say Custom Fire. That indicates the chassis and pump were built by Mack, but the body was built by Custom Fire. Get rid of that AFFF foam. It’s a known carcinogen. The controls for motor shutdown in the cab are air shut offs, not fuel. Mack commonly used air shut offs for many years in their trucks. The air connect is a quick (and easier) fix for a leak in the air system. Its not something Mack would install, but it works. Its a sweet truck that will run for long time with a little tlc. Have fun
The "Custom Fire" plates were added when the truck was redone by the company that did the work. This was when the pump was replaced, auto transmission added and the color coded labels were added to the pump panels and the jump seats that had mounts for the SCBA's. All these features were commonly added to fire engines in the late 80's - early 90's.
@@tomwilkeson2419 Were the jump seats open and then enclosed during refurb as well?
@@greymansion1 I am not familiar with this engine but was speaking from being a firefighter in the early 90's and seeing the big push to auto transmissions in emergency vehicles that took place then. I think you might be right about the cab. Many were converted during the same time.
OMG! That IS the truck my grandfather had driven from Pennsylvania. He was part of the Sun Prairie fire department. He and the assistant chief flew out there to the factory and drove it back themselves. She was one of a new generation of firetrucks that grandpa showed my dad back when he was in high school.
Be cool to learn everything about it, thanks for continuing with the story and now you have the ultimate big boy toy.
I worked at KME for about 10 years so I'm trying to remember some of the little things from years past, like the Unity spot lights always had trouble with the handles.
You need to get the hoses for the pumper. Rigid ones for the side and canvas ones for the back.
Yeah get that pump lubed and see if it works
@@rsprockets7846 Oh that pump works great, It will pump it's ass off!
The pump is not PTO driven. It is driven through a transfer case. The input to the pump is a driveshaft directly connected to the transmission output shaft. In "Road" condition, the transfer case supplies all engine power to the rear axle. In "Pump" condition, all of the engine power it supplied to the pump rather than the rear end. PTOs back then could not handle the full engine power. Modern PTOs can handle 1250 GPM pumps and possibly even 1500 pumps by now.
Dude, ha ha ha, about that flashlight, YOU bought a firetruck . . . who's gonna tell you ANYTHING! Can't wait to hear the fixed siren. Thanks for the fun! BTW all new hose up top is about $1800, not as much as I thought.
The Gold Bulldog is a symbol for mack engine and silver dog is a vendor engine from what I remember. These Macks were workhorses for FDNY well into 911.
I absolutely love the Mack fire engine! I ride old Suzuki, my wife did too until Monday. Bad wreck but she is doing OK. Broken knee for sure. No head issues, she wore her helmet.
Love that the head panel in the top of the fire truck looks like the panel in your grandpa's Ford!
Very nice. I fought many fires from a similar 1970 CF600 that had been FDNY from Staten Island. We bought it when FDNY retired it and redid the bodywork. Made the tank smaller and put a hydraulic reel in the back that carried 1500 ft of 4 inch supply hose. It was our water supply engine.Have fun with yours.
You should badge (wrap) this firetruck and make it the official advertising vehicle of the WatchJRGo TH-cam channel.
100%
No wrap leave old Graphics but get a red magnetic cover for old cd logo with something. Jr
*And I now find myself watching every firetruck video.*
One of the coolest things I have ever seen. Love it!!
Your local fire house may have some old fire hose they may give you.
Brings me back... First engine I drove as a rookie in 1985. Our CF-600 was a reserve engine at the time. It had a non-synchro manual transmission so you had to double clutch and match rpms to shift. It was a V-6. When you got the hang of it, with the short wheelbase, it was so cool to drive. When I was an engineer, I had the experience of pumping with it (and other pumpers) to Chicago FD’s Big John deluge gun, 6-7-1, at the East Chicago tire fire in 1994 th-cam.com/video/W7KyNUt7RwU/w-d-xo.html . We later donated the rig to the Hall of Flame fire museum in Phoenix. It was fully restored in 2004 by the museum. I retired as the vehicle maintenance officer. I spent many hours in, on, and under that CF. Thanks for the memories.
JR, the siren/horn switch lets you use the horn button on the steering wheel to wind the Federal 'Q' out. There should also be a foot button on the floor on the officer's side (Passenger side) that controls the 'Q'. You've bought a true classic, BTW...the Mack CF is an awesome rig. The fire department I ran with (Chesterfield, Va) had had around 20 of them...they were like tanks, they last forever.
What a rig! This is a true definition of a bulldog! Just for future reference, the transmission in this is an Allison HT740 4 speed automatic, one of the toughest transmissions Allison has ever built. Now the next thing you need to do to this monster is straight pipe it so we can all hear that Mack engine singing as you're going down the road!
I grew up just 10 miles south of Arcadia In a town called Arma Kansas. So cool to see this!
Your vehicle taste is eclectic JR, there's no question about that, lol! Now you can power wash ten cars at the same time...
A few things:
That 120v shoreline plug is an auto-eject. As soon as the alternator spins, it fires out the cord... no button for it.
That e-stop kills the motor with a fuel cut on top of the engine. You’ll have to get to the intake manifold to reset it, and it’s a complete @&$%# to get to. I’d leave that one alone.
That Q-siren is clicking its brake when you push it. I’m guessing that’s the siren brake button. Look for a little black pedal on the floorboard that runs it.
The air check valve is just past that air plug. It’s a simple one-way valve, common part.
Streamlight firebox flashlight: you have to do it.
Nice wheels, bro!!
What a major score. Im trying to ride around with like a whole crew and do some simulations. I love the redudancy
You're doing with the truck what you're supposed to do with it; ENJOY IT!

What an awesome looking truck. The gold bulldog is such a neat logo. 1000 gallons per minute is impressive. Definitely get the explosion proof flashlight.
The fire truck is an awesome addition to the channel. so much potential as for maybe restro mod i hope you keep it around for awhile.

Yes. Working mechanical siren and a bad ass flashlight. Yes and yes.
You should be Razzing Demolition Ranch. They just recently went looking for a fire truck and found something a little more all purpose.
Firetrucks are freaking awesome
When you start that truck, if you push button A and button B at the same time, it uses both batteries to start. FYI
Love the shop. Keep living the dream, thinking $1 per ride at parades and festivals, you'll have that paid for in no time.
The headset connection at the pump panel allows the engineer (driver / pump operator) to access the vehicles radio remotely so they can hear other vehicles and communicate with handheld radios on scene. The push to talk on our engines keys the radio.
For 3k you just need to keep this and don’t sell it
i agree so much potential for content for sure!
Oh, and the turn signal control is a replacement. You can see where the original control arm was in that opening on the steering column. The green light just forward of that was the original turn indicator light. That’s why the hazard light control is on the dash.
Dude. This thing is cool. For three grand is nuts. Need more of this and less envoy and corvette.
The neighbors must be so confused what is going on at this place 😂 bet they’re excited for their new Fire Department so close to the police station.

Take it to a road trip and use it as a camper! Storage is plentiful and the teak deck above is a sweet spot to drink a cold one and chill during sunset.
Knowing how your dad loves mechanical things, I bet he thinks this is way cool.
TV and movie companies would hire this truck for period stuff. Nice little side business ;)
I know this because my brother in law does just that with his collection which has cost him a heck of a lot over the years. He would LOVE this machine and will not believe the price. I've sent him the link just to get his reaction!
Three of us drove a brand new Hahn / Superior fire engine from the factory in Helena, Montana back to our fire station in Port Ludlow Washington. One of us always had to ride in the rear compartment next to the diamond plate dog house, yes, very hot!!!
Surprised to see a Truck built in 77 in service this long, most of these mack’s were replaced in the 90s or early 2000s. These are classics, so cool the department kept it this long!
Trying twisting the whipper control for the driver side that should make it move on its own. That how it was on my cf
Love this old Mack
Man I absolutely love this thing, I'd personally just swap out the single beacons up top for a more 80s box lightbar, and replace the LEDs below the windshield with halogens
Great project! Looking forward to its refresh.
I think this is the best bargain you've ever scored on the channel! Super cool. If you sell it you can bank, but it's gotta be mighty tempting to keep.
8:18 that’s a PA-200 siren. The FDNY used to have that exact same siren on their MACK rigs back in the day including their American LaFrance and Seagrave trucks. PA-200 & PA-300 are the best sounding Electric sirens ever. But the Federal QA and QB are the best out of all.
You need to get yourself a pair of Mars 888's and, a real GE powercall siren. Powercall and the Q together is a symphony of glorious sound.👍🇺🇸
Maybe the Detail Dudes would love to use this as a mobile detailer unit. It's got power, air, water storage and hoses, plenty of storage for chems...seems perfect. Good marketing / brand recognition too.
What a cool truck. Obviously Arcadia had no idea the gem they had. If you or they made a shirt for support, I would buy a couple. Keep up the fun JR.
One thing to note with these old pumps, try not to run them dry, the water helps lubricate the compressor wheel, make contact with the pump housing.
Excellent purchase ....and it’s put a smile on your face 😎😎
Air Tanks! It would not make much sense for Firefighters to charge into a fire wearing Oxygen Tanks! Love the channel and all your videos! Keep up the good work!
Mack trucks used to have a huge display in the ABE airport. I think you should contact them and see if they can give you the hookup on parts. Especially since it’s a classic and it would be a great PR. Maybe tie it in with the shirts and the fundraising for the Arcadia PD?
