I BOUGHT A Legit FIRETRUCK From The Fire Department

  • When the stimulus check hits... okay I'm kidding, but I'm not kidding about buying a firetruck! I bought a 1977 Mack CF-600 from the Arcadia, KS fire department for $3,000. They posted it for sale on FB and I said I'd bring cash, no questions asked, and be there Monday morning to get it. Now they've got their new Grumman fire engine and I've got this beautiful old truck. We're driving it back home and then I have literally no idea what I'm going to do with it.
    For every 100,000 likes this video gets I'll send another $1,000 to the Arcadia Fire Department.

    My dad used to be a firefighter retired now, so I got to ride in some growing up and I loved it. He used to bring me along for work when there were races going on, as firefighters had to be present, and I have vivid memories of sitting in a huge offroad Unimog fire truck on top of some large hills next to the track so we could see the whole circuit, watching racing with my dad and another firefighter.
    We've also bought 3 retired firetrucks at work, smaller ones, but 1 60's International, 1 70's International, and an 80's Dodge Ram, all built to be pickup trucks again, but with higher carrying capacity than normal, one even has a small crane in front of the bed, and 2 of them got a tip function for the bed.
    In Norway firetrucks are registered differently from normal trucks and cars, so we got the increased load capacity, and even if I can only drive a normal car up to 3500kg, I can drive that sort of vehicle up to 7500kg, but over 7500kg they have to be limited to 50kph for me to drive it, without having to get a different license.
    One of the firetrucks that are out of service but still kept and maintained by the local fire station was still in service when I was a kid, which is so weird to think about, late 80's early 90's, if a fire broke out, the ladder truck was a Volvo from 1936. I have 3 of them and I ensure them through Hemmings best price and full coverage for next to nothing. Under the right front is the flapper valve that controls the heater, Spray some WD40 in that end and at the dash control end and then work the valve at the heater by hand and it will free up. 1 of my PIERCES LANCERS had the same problem and we do not need any extra heat here in Tampa. Fixed it right up. OK now open the dash and check the back of the spedo cable. When you spin the gear at the back of the dash the spedo needle should spin or at least move. I will bet you a box of doughnuts that you have a broken spedo cable. You can not fix it you need to replace it. Easy to do disconnect from the trans. you might get a couple of oil drips so watch your eyes and you then go your eyes. now go back to the dash and try to pull up and you should get it. DO NOT start at the trans and pull down first!!! If it is broken in the middle and you pull down you will get the bottom half and usually the top half slides down and then you are stuck with removing the ENTIRE thing case and all!!! You will need to order a new spedo from a dealer OR manufacturing company. My '89 PIERCE cable is 18 feet long and cost $396! OUCH. it is usually broken in the middle because of the twists and turns it goes through. Frankly they never replace them since they do not care about speed and who is going to give a fire truck a speeding ticket? LOL But officer I was going to a fire. if I can help feel free to look me up here or at no1chef99david@aol.com and I would be willing to help out . Man!!! Retired firefighter here. Either drove or rode on dozens of trucks from various manufacturers from the 1970's to 2000's. One department I worked for had a number of 1976 Macks, very similar to the one you got. Those Macks were absolutely the BEST pumpers I ever drove or rode on. Very friendly handling characteristics. Solid, reliable, hardly ever broke down. Tracked, accelerated and braked very well. When any firetruck gets old, they get put on triple life support. Air hose to keep pressure up, electrical plug to keep batteries up, and a garden hose in the booster tank, because the tank leaked when they got old. Great buy. Need to find the switch for the "Q" friction siren. Usually on the floor. That is what makes a real fire truck. Enjoy.

    AHHH so cool! In the town I grew up in, two of my uncles were fire fighters - one was the chief. I grew up around the fire station and the engines. As many times as I go to sit in them and ride in them, I never got tired of it - still love them to this day. I'm glad you rescued the old girl. The town's fire department often did the same with someone always willing to buy the old engines, restore them and use them in parades. They had engines from the late 19th century (horse-drawn, steam powered pump) to the 1920s, 1940s and so one. Hope you have fun working on it!

    Where I live, fire trucks cannot be sold or donated for use as a fire truck once they're a certain number of years old. The intent is to prevent volunteer fire departments being given old unreliable equipment they can no longer get parts for.
    You should do everything you can to make that a reliable truck and then find a place to donate it.
    Lots of places in MX and further south would be thrilled to have it. I've read stories about retired firefighters driving old trucks to MX and Central America.

    • @ChiefsFireman
      @ChiefsFireman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the main reasons we got rid of it, Parts were hard to find or stupid expensive! Far more then our $6k budget could afford.

    • @morstyrannis1951

      @@ChiefsFireman I live in British Columbia Canada. That's why the province has regulations about the age of fire trucks. Volunteer departments in particular were being stuck with equipment too old to be of much use.
      In the developing world the parts that are too expensive to replace in the USA may be repairable with their lower labour costs. Yes laboUr - that's English not American! ;-)
      I'm sure there must be some internet presence for these current and retired fire fighters driving trucks to MX and points south.

    My neighbor bought a firetruck a few years ago. The local fire dept. had to sell it because it was too old for them to be legally able to use it (it had under 60,000 miles on it.) The equipment it came with (hydraulic ladder with a hose nozzle that can be aimed remotely, a BIG water pump, hundreds of feet of hose, some of it spooled on power hose reels) is worth way more than he paid. Fire Departments are not permitted to use them anymore & there isn't much else you can do with a firetruck without major modifications. This truck had been put up for sealed bid auction before without getting a single bid. My neighbor paid a little less than what JR did for his.

    i drive a firetruck, a lot of those older firetrucks are slightly wider in the front than on the rear. When parking against a line, if its the case as mentioned, you'll need to have a small gap in the rear to be perfectly straight. If you hit the mechanical siren and then hit the siren brake (if it has one) you can make it sound like a cat
    you dont have to hook it up to an air line, if the air tanks drain you'll just have to leave it on for a bit longer so that the air pressure builds up. Mash on the breaks a few times to see if it has a stuck air valve open. Also, drain the condensation from the air tanks, might have 2-3 of them.

We managed to get very lucky and found a 1992 Grumman Firecat in good condition out of Ohio, they were asking $12k but worked with us to get to $8k on the price which we were able to persuade the City to buy.
      If we had more station space we absolutely would have kept Big Red, but we only have 3 bays, and having an Engine, Tanker, and Brush we had no room for Red. "In today's Episode, I make the world's first DRIFT FIRE TRUCK"

  • @Stick0413
    @Stick0413 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mack CF fire trucks are work horses. I got my start in 2006 volunteering and we had a 1991 and 1981 Mack CF (the 91 was a Mack/Grumman, and the 81 was a straight up Mack). Pressed into service there is no doubt either could perform today in 2021. The one thing I do notice is that it is a fully enclosed cab. That was likely (truly almost guarnteed) a later addition. The 81 we ran was an open cab, and even in 06 and 07 we were running her as our second due. I will say this too, if it wasn't for the experimental breaks on the 91 Mack/Grumman, she would likely be in service to this day. Yet we pushed her to second due in 07, and the breaks we couldn't get parts outside of custom machined parts, sadly money said to retire her even though she had years left to serve. Don't get me wrong, if I were to straight up purchase a new engine in 2021, yeah it would be a ton safer, but the fact remains that nothing made today can compare to what was made when Mack was in full swing in the fire apparatus business. Now we are running an 2007 Pierce and a 2001 Pierce (a used piece purchased to replace the 1991 Mack/Grumman when she was forcefully retired), and soon to be 2021 Pierce/2007 Pierce, yet I truly would want to rely on the '81/'91 Macks if push came to shove.
