It's just different upbringing. I'm guessing your social upbringing dynamic among your male peers was similar to mine. I think that's easier said than done, this guy definitely felt like he couldn't win the fight. Getting just one punch is one thing, now getting punched several times, not being able to fight back, falling to the ground and possibly getting stepped on the face is another thing. If I were in a situation where I had the feeling that I wouldn't be able to beat my opponent, I would run away too. Better to run away and be considered a "coward" than to be the brave one who lost his life or who was left with physical limitations from a fight he had no way of winning.
