    Something important is when you're doing frequency sweeps on your EQ boost it only around +10db, you're boosting it to over 20 so any frequency is gonna sound obnoxious, at that point you might remove something you don't want to remove.

    • @brayzbeats

      MAJZKLUANI exactly.

      Yes u want to use minimal boosts and cuts, u will be surprised sometimes the right -2db cut in the right frequency will significantly improve your sound.

    • @thatboimarco9351

      if it sound okay u def should not stick to numbers

    • @t.r.e4482
      @t.r.e4482 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's a byproduct of training your ears as well. A lot of times people boost so hard because a 2 or 3 db difference is waaay to subtle for them to pick up on.

    • @alexig1840
      @alexig1840 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@t.r.e4482 I found my self doing this. I would cut it too much and then not be satisfied. And then through experience, and everyone I knew saying "use ur ears" and not giving me any useful advice, I finally just sat down and really listened. I still have some ways to go to properly identify the frequency, but overall using my ears is most important.

    Tip for recording genres like trap and pop: make. sure. you. deboxy. If your vocals aren't sitting right in a mix its most likely due to that boxy frequency taking up too much space. I personally like to use MannyM Tripple D, amazing plugin for that whole process. If they're still not sitting right though a universal fix could be to mess with your stereo image. Making your instrumental slightly mono and increasing the vocal"s stereo space can help wonders when its sounding like you vocals are "behind" the instrumental.

    * Cut harsh frequencies with a narrow Q (no boosting).
    * High pass filter.
    * Compression (using presets and adjust the threshold).
    * 2nd compressor (lower ratio on both lowering ratio on both).
    * De-essing (not to much, to prevent lisping).
    * Boost high-mids (3-4K).
    * Sidechaining with the instrumental.
    * Saturation, chorus and adlibs (with a bit of delay) in the chorus.
    Got it.
    Great tips man. :)
    (Also, you have great enunciation. I'm no native english speaker, yet I got every word you said and even caught that Hannibal Lecter reference in the song lyrics)

  • @oliver.hrn7
    @oliver.hrn7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Tip: if you want a more visual stock plugin for compression, instead of fruity compressor you can use fruity limiter and then change it to compress mode and the visual interface is kinda similar to fabfilter’s.

    Its great to see you getting more technical in your vids, as i think is much important than just seeing the creative process of making a beat or things like that. With the accessibility of DAWS now days people think they can just slap some samples over a beat and they are done, but mixing and editing are so much more important.

    Adding to this great tutorial, the best way to mix things is to use something only if it sounds like you need it. Not because someone said you have to use it. It's also important to take time and learn what everything does on FX and plugins you'll use. That way your mixing and you could be like "There's too much nasual quality in this mix lemme fin it and cut it with the eq" Or "Saturation will add some upper harmonics to this barely audible 808"

    Great video! I would recommend not being so scared of the low end. It's good to get rid of the low-mid boxxy sounds yes but a bit of low end below the boxy frequencies will give it a lot of body and presence so it doesn't sound so much like a radio voice. That low end to a vocal is just as important as the high frequencies.
    Also, with rap vocals it is very important to to emphasize the transients. Having clean transients can turn your vocals into weapons and can help it stand out of the mix without the need of a side-chaining.
    Also dipping a bit of the instrumental out where the vocals are, properly compressing the vocals and eqing them to the song will also eliminate the need for side-chaining which can in turn cause problems when sent to the mastering phase when it is further compressed.
    Oh one last thing! Sweeping for bad frequencies can be a bad habit and can take out the life of a vocal performance. I know lots of TH-cam producers say to do so but it's more so situational than standard. What you are doing when you are sweeping is making yourself AWARE of frequencies rather than them being an actual problem. You will hear that frequency if you point it out to yourself because you are training your ears in the moment to notice them. A better approach would be to understand how vocals work and eliminate frequencies that resonate. That's when you need to do a needle cut like that. If a frequency isn't resonating uncontrollably then it is more so a vocal timbre than a problem. The more tight dips you do the more wooshy your vocals could sound when your voice passes over those frequency dips. If you are just starting out and can't point those resonating sounds out right away, try getting an Audio Spectrum Analyzer like Voxenga's Span plug-in which has a free version. With the default setting on that analyzer it will actually show peaks wherever a resonating signal is happening. It's not good practice to always use visual analyzers but if you are starting out, it's good to see it so you can learn what it sounds like so you can point it out in the future with your ears. Once your ears are trained you can keep using the visual analyzer with your ears to quickly find problems and analyze them to see if they need to be addressed.
    Still lots of great techniques in here! Especially with the room set up. It all starts with the recording. Sometimes mixing just entails stylizing the vocals rather than actually mixing when it is recorded properly. Using Servida's video along with these tips, you can both make your vocals sit in the mix but also sound full and present.

    I think you should put the de-esser on before the compressor, because the compressed could be being triggered by loud s sounds and lowering the volume of the track unnecessarily, so if you add it before it'll be less likely to mess it up. (Same reason you put a low cut EQ on before the compressor)

    5:26 really can hear that same room ring in your voiceover that you were demonstrating in the EQing of the vocals, possibly a lot of hard surfaces, desk, screen, roof etc, you could have a look into a large desk mat/mousemat or even hang an acoustic cloud (acoustic panel) above you to lower the standing waves :D ah the joys of square studios hehe, I struggled with the same acoustics myself, turned out being my acoustic guitar body ringing on top of the room ring, nice work tho, love the Lewitt mics, have a 440 pure myself, super crisp!
