I currently attend a institute for music an they are teaching me a lot but I tend to feel like most engineers are bias towards hip hop an only show you they’re steps of other genres such as rock an country. That's because most people who are instructors at school no longer work in field (very few due) and most people that do hiphop don't teach in classes, they're too busy working in the field. best way to learn is to shadow an engineer at a recording studio
Word if learning how to mix is your thing. Call up a pro studio pay the studio Fee and sit with the engineer bro. You'll spend less doing it that way than going to school. People coming out of school have it very hard landing jobs as 90% of them have no real world experience tracking or mixing.. Don't be that student.. the degree means nada in this field

@@brandenicole7 I’m at the SAE right now (in Paris) and fully disagree with this comment. This tutorial is just a really quick coverage of just one module. The SAE will teach you about sound engineering in DEPTH. You will learn sound theory and the physics behind sound, you will learn Signal Flow and how to use consoles (there is an SSL 4000 like the one in the video in Paris’ campus), you’ll learn about electronics, learn how microphones work, learn how to properly use metrics etc. The thing with sound engineering schools is that they can’t teach the most important thing to get good at mixing, which is having a good ear and quickly spot the issues. Only practice can do that. To help you with that, the SAE has a lot of computers with Pro Tools, Ableton and Logic Pro in them so you can train on any Apple-compatible DAW. You also have access to studios with professionnal material. The school will finally provide you something that tutorials won’t : people. The SAE network is pretty huge (in France at least), and you’ll get the opportunity to meet some extremely experienced people. These people will sometimes be your teachers. I’ve never felt so professionnal and never understood sound engineering better than now, and I can tell you that my scholarship at SAE (wich started 2 months ago), played a role in that. Please remember that I’m talking about my personnal experience in PARIS. It may be different in other campuses, and this school is really made for people who want to become confirmed sound engineers. As a mix audio engineer I back this video, very true and very key points featured down to the subtractive eq and vocal treatment pre-compression etc. very good. I wish to see more like this ✊
Excellent tutorial. Shows you dont need much, you just need the RIGHT things done. I could barely notice some of those first changes he made. He didnt even make any EQ cuts!
Raj Beats yeah this was a great tutorial. I am in the Audio Production degree program at Full Sail University and they are preparing use how to mix and master on the go. With the right software because most of these artists don’t have the budget to lease out a major studio and keep the Engineer inside until he is finished.
Raj Beats Those “cuts” are being done by the multiband compressor. There still is “cuts” in frequency but only when said freq needs it. This way you don’t hear any cutting when it’s not necessary, possibly sucking the life out of the performance. Those first few changes that you barely noticed where some of the most important as it prepared the vocal for the busses comp (rvox). Had he shown the vocals with Rvox but without the multibands, the Rvox would have responded MUCH differently. But yeah, no EQ cutting except on the sub-lows, but I get what you’re saying. Multi band is where it’s at. *apologies if I’m stating the obvious for you..
Except he was doing like 1db of compression on rvox lmao. He was sent an already mixed vocal and just barely put processing on it. That's why you didn't notice the first couple moves. For anyone with a raw recorded vocal with no processing, this mixing isn't going to get them anywhere close.
My guess is the processing you're hearing from the raw vocals is the outboard gear on the way in. What happens when you take care of all those little spikes of frequencies is you'll need significantly less compression on the buss. It's the same concept as stacking compressors so each one is only doing a little bit of work to sound more transparent. In this chain, many of these stacked compressors are just working on specific ranges. That Rvox is actually adding a lot to the vocal, even at a reduction of only several db because of how the vocal was processed leading up to it. As far as not hearing the initial moves, that just comes with time and experience. After a while, you'll be able to pick these out by ear and be in the ballpark when you go to process them. Good luck!

"Listen for what´s bothering me on the vocals". Mumble rap! Press "mute". Mix done! :D

Poggers
this wasn't mumble rap though

So glad I have all these plugins. Makes it so easier to work and mess around with.
the Wave C6 plugin is a good choice over the C4 for mixing rap vocals. Not because it has more bands, but because it seems to be more flat...
I reeeeeeeeally like this guy's delivery/teaching style! I dunno what it is, but I feel like I'm able to process (and hopefully retain lol) what he's saying without it coming off as didactic and me tuning out! Hey, Waves, I hope you're reading this! lol
you right! he is not command talking ...he is saying...look brother - this is quite simple...do these simple steps....here's how I do it...you can do it too.
Really nice vocal mix. Amazing appreciate you sharing this video 💯🎹🎼🎶⚜️
I love this this guy explains stuff. This is probably the best tutorial I've ever heard because get gets to the point quickly and effectively. You can also tell he really enjoys teaching with helps to convey the info! FIRE

I've come back to this video several times since I first watched it. I learn something new every time.
Thank you for all the tips...
Wow cant believe Im just now seeing this. Lu Diaz is a G.O.A.T!
The vocal sounded really good before he did anything to it 🤔 .. the vocas probably been through outboard gear before even reaching the DAW so people with no out board gear or nice mic or good treated room, will have to do more to get it to sound good
Yep. Like what a dope mic preamp alone will do...
Guys just focus on treatment of your room. THAT will pay off. Analog gear in a bad room is useless
Mosco Enterprise from my experience the room don’t matter that much to be honest. I mean look at where some of these new artists be recording 😂 hotels and all sorts of bed rooms
SAINT BROS i was making that comment to show the right way to beginners and amateurs as a professional engineer who worked with guys like Young Thug, Gunna and other ppl you might know) and i shared the comment to stop the spread of BS misinformation that i see day in and day out on the internet. And i do that on our ig page as well. If anyone is curious to see our credits - our page on instagram is mosco.enterprise
That's what I thought!
This man needs his own show
This is my favorite commercial
I'm very greatful for this tutorial. This has been a problem area for me, as a new engineer. This shed alot of light on what to look for when mixing. Thank u guys immensely. I honestly can't put my gratitude into words right now!!
uploaded for 3 hours and 6000 views already, I can see how many people are making hiphop music
Its the biggest genre in the world.
isn't only the people that are making hip-hop, if you listen to hip hop this video probably will appear on ya recommended.
It’s a culture.
that's true
I don’t make hip hop but I’m still here
Loved this breakdown video. Keep em coming Waves. Shouts to Lu Diaz 💯💪🏾‼️
Yo I need that whole package he just used!
Shonuff
Man this takes me back to class @ Full Sail University. Learning how to use everything INCLUDING that beautiful console.
I plan on going very soon
I will use these tipps for my next mix! Thanks ;) keep going with that good stuff
I second that
How did it work out y'all?
So much sauce was giving in this vid its crazy
Do you have a video based on mixing hip hop beat stems? Thanks for this video btw, helped a lot 🙏🏽
Lu Diaz, what a concise and factual teacher. Amazing video Waves. Thanks to both of you.
Damn didn't know Lu was still doing his thing
