Visage were a studio project put together by Midge Ure (Ultravox) and Rusty Egan as a way to produce electronic music for Rusty's nightclub "The Blitz".... Chris Payne and Billy Currie (also from Ultravox) had worked together with Gary Numan as part of Tubeway army. So if you like this... check out Ultravox (everyone knows vienna.... but tracks like All Stood Still, The Thin Wall, Hymn etc are all pioneering).
As a 16-year-old when this came out, whenever I hear it, I believe that I was born at exactly the right time. In the UK, it only reached 8th position in the charts, but musically, it was an absolute landmark. It's one song that is still guaranteed to get me on the dance-floor, such is its mesmeric quality. Steve Strange died quite suddenly at the age of only 55 in early 2016, but this is such a legacy to leave. Billy Currie, FYI, was a member of Ultravox, with Midge Ure...hence, as you say, those f***ing synths... "Devenir en gris"...it means "To turn to grey" in French...I studied French for several years, so lyrically, this song is significant for me - this combination of English and French is very uncommon
You're right, it's a fuc***, I mean iconic song 😂😂😂 With Steve Strange and his makeup and outfits. Sooo New Romantics, sooo New Wave, soooo early 80's! And 40 years later, still watching this while staying home because of Covid-19...
I was a baby when this music originally came out, BUT there was a bit of a revival in the early 00s and I was able to experience that as a young adult. It was SO much fun so I can imagine how much fun it was at the time this stuff came out!
Having lived through all the amazing late 70s early 80s new wave synth movement.. I can say you would have loved it ! Fantastic times never to be repeated
Yes, I miss them too! These were great club times. Regrettable you can't really revive them. :( Dereck, you question rearrangements, I don't know any. Astonishing, know I'm thinking about it! :)

Midge ure from Ultravox was behind this. Steve strange (rip) was unique. What you see in the video you see on the street. He was always on the stage. Wonderful 80's.
This and Gary Numan really helped bring electronic music into the front and centre of popularity in the UK back in the day, especially considering most music journalists and magazines hated electronic music, and were into the typical British stuff back then, mostly punk bands and disco type rock done by guys with the flared jeans and long flowing hair. Then along comes Visage, and Gary Numan and OMD, and the following year The Human League cemented synth-pop as a staple in the zeitgeist for a few years with their iconic No.1 album “Dare!” Then it all took off, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, Soft Cell, Bronski Beat, Howard Jones, everyone jumped on the hype train once the equipment was much more affordable, the synthesisers and drum machines, and Visage among others is much to thank for this. I was 12 years old when this song came out. I can't believe that this song is 42 years old. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this.... Steve Strange is considered one of the pioneers of the New Romantic movement. The subculture emerged from his London clubs, The Blitz Club, Club For Heroes, and Camden Palace. The clubs emphasised a mix of fashion, music and glamour, and would be frequented by members of Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Sique Sique Sputnick, Haysi Fantayzee, Bananarama, and singers such as Sade, Marilyn, Midge Ure, Bob Geldof, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Madonna etc.

Imagine hearing at the club's, I was dancing to it at school when it was released...loving your selection of music and that you're discovering it ✨🙌🏾🙌🏾💜🎶🎶😎
I still listen to this song regularly. How it sounds is quite unique and it aged gracefully. I'm 100% sure that if any DJ played the original in any club, people would dance their arse off on it. It's definitely a New Wave masterpiece. Just like Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics is another NW masterpiece that still sound great to this days. The latter is still getting played on many radio stations in 2024... heard it once again just a few days ago. It's just sad that Fade To Grey doesn't get the same recognition.
This song is a classic British song of the 80's, music from a guy from Gary Numan's band and a couple of Ultravox guys and eventually Midge Ure from Ultravox writing the lyrics and melody. Steve Strange was a character from the new romantics movement of the time (also appeared as one of the characters in front of the bulldozer in the video for Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" , with a friend of Steve Strange's doing the spoken French lyrics. Visage was a project of Ultravox and Magazine musicians with Steve Strange as the vocalist / front man. The Godley and Creme video is better tah this one.
'Devenir en gris' means 'turn grey'. The female dancer in the video is Perri Lister, a member of the dance troupe Hot Gossip. The female vocalist of the French lyrics is Brigitte Arens, the girlfriend of Rusty Egan, who was instrumental in the works of Visage. And, of course, Steve Strange was the frontman.
Dereck, a Must from the early 80’s would be CARS from Gary Numan and WISHING from A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS. SAFETY DANCE from Men Without Hats is also a pure gem.
Great choices they are, but there ARE literally hundreds of great 80s tunes. I’m not even going to suggest a few. Like, where would I start? Liverpool in the 80s had so many groups. Ok, I’ll name one. Reward, by The Teardrop Explodes, from Liverpool.
So many better tunes from Gary Numan than Cars. Me I Disconnect From You, We Are Glass, This Wreckage, M.E. or even go back to Tubeway Army and Are Friends Electric?
You must realize when this stuff was coming out no one heard synths like this. It was all so new and fresh but that given is still just awesome compositions, production and overall sound. This was like from another plane coming out of The Beatles, and punk rock. SO UNREAL back then.
Steve strange had a famous club in liverpool and later in london and the young ppl that went there are the ppl who started off all the early 80s uk synth bands, and back in the day this was most definitely a banger in the clubs. These songs make feel so nostalgic its physically painful. The 80s was a magical decade. rip Steve
This track started life as a synth riff, the riff was used during sound check to set the levels at a venue but was never actually played during the performance! There's a great video in where the guy who came up with the riff talk's about how the whole song came together from start to finish, he even play's live a few bits of the track and even tells which instruments were actually used! It's a fascinating story! If you love this track, just search for fade to grey here on TH-cam, it's highly recommend!
I have loved this song since its release and have watched the other video for it multiple time. I have never seen this version of the video for it. I love how Steve looks so different every time I see him.

Chris Payne (Tubeway Army) and Billy Currie (Ultravox) composed the bones of the song with drums by Cedric Sharpley (Tubeway Army) while they were on tour with Gary Numan. Midge Ure (Ultravox) came up with the melodic structure and lyrics - the female vocals were sung/spoken by Visage member Rusty Egan's girlfriend at the time... Classic!
This Song was Epic , Sensational, Sureal , new Romantic. Steves voice and Brigettes voice are Esquisite Together. And what a beautiful dancing team they were. They not make music like this now. It was Other Worldly. Miss the Magical 1980s. No time will ever be like 1989s again, WOW !!!!! u have to be there to believe it!! 😀❤️🌠❤️🎵🌻

I think Midge Ure used depression for inspiration throughout his career. Check out Ultravox' One Small Day. Not particularly a synth track, but a song of hope with a rousing chorus for all the beautiful people out there struggling to find peace with themselves.
I remember so well, I was 13 yrs old, watching Saturday morning TV with all the usual 'new wave' bands on, then this song played and I sat open-mouthed and wide-eyed...
The message of the song isn't complicated. It's about growing old and finally dying. It's about death. And maybe recognising the beauty in death. This is why this song is a goth dance-floor stomper.
I vividly do remember how i was starstruck with this one. You knew something's new is coming up. Time shift. For me the start of what we understand as "The 80's" musically. Here in Germany it was really all over and a huge hit. Alongside this i do remember and recommand Yazoo's Don't Go and as already mentioned Soft Cell's Tainted Love. I was 4 days from my 15th birthday (release date 14 Nov 1980) and broke a window with the bass line towards the end (oops). I have the original vinyl and this has to still be my favourite song ever.
Yes, Gary Numan "Cars", "Are Friends Electric", "Down In The Park" or even his recent "My Name Is Ruin" with his daughter Persia. It ain't for nothing that Gary is called "the most sampled" artist in the world.
When you mention new wave and the french in the same video it got me thinking you should really check out Plastic Bertrand and his hit song Ça plane pour moi (which he does dressed in pink), one of few french songs charting in the US.
One of my favourite tracks of the Uk new wave, a time of endless creativity, fantastic originality and openess to continental languages in UK mainstream music. This song stands the test of time and yes I have danced my ass off to this!
Great synth pop classic ! Midge Ure (from Ultravox) is behind this project ! When are you doing an Aurora video again (maybe my suggestion) ? Best wishes : Gerry
They made another video that was very popular on cable TV. The video featured mainly head shots of Steve Strange with some very interesting make-up. Much later historians of popular music identified Visage as being part of a movement called the "New Romantics", who were mainly British homosexuals who liked to wear heavy make-up and androgynous clothing, inspired by David Bowie of the early 1970s. The most successful New Romantic group was Culture Club with their lead singer Boy George, but Visage was the first to have a break-out song.
Steve was from a small town called Newbridge in South Wales about 4 or 5 miles from me. a very well known character in my local area - He was definately one of kind!
Stephen John Harrington (28 May 1959 - 12 February 2015), better known by his stage name Steve Strange, was a Welsh pop singer. He became famous as the leader of the new wave synth-pop group Visage, best known for their single "Fade to Grey". On 12 February 2015, Strange suffered a heart attack, at the age of 55, whilst in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt; he died later that day in hospital.
Dereck, these will blow your mind with their disco vibe yet very 80's sound. I swear they'll go on your playlist: Just An Illusion - Imagination Babe We're Gonna Love Tonight - Lime Desire - Ronni Griffith
Diana Ankudinova is a young performer who shocks us with her pleasant voice and takes us into the abyss of events!!! Diana Ankudinova is unique and inimitable, goosebumps from her voice!=)))) Diana sings as if she lives in the song! The soul freezes or opens with Diana's voice.=))))))) I am a musician who has been with music for years, and believe me, I have not heard such a tone in all these past years.
At the clubs in the 80's in Miami, everyone used to rush to the dance floor as soon as the first note hit. BTW.. Kelly Osborne sampled this for her song One Word.
iconic song from the early 80s....one of the classic early synth tunes... one of the very best for sure. Only 13 when it came out so a little early for me in the clubs but can imagine the euphoria and excitement when this would of been played ...so atmospheric and gothic
Awesome ,dude you should review a Roxy Music track ,like "Avalon ",or "more than this "they were absolute game changers in the style back in 70s /80s classics ,some of the best and flowing bass out there .
I love your reaction to this song. You are much younger but you grasp the feeling/vibe that song was when listened to, like you said Synth orgasm. It's a song you could be on the dance floor in your own zone and feel almost euphoric. Great reaction video. I'm glad it ended up on my feed. RIP Steve Strange.
I was born in the 1970s, and am very familiar with this song, but this mix is exceptional! Even through the sh!tty old laptop i have in my bedroom, this sounds better than I've ever heard it!
Did you know that Steve Strange met David Bowie in 1980, before he ever had a recording contract. They met in a night club. Bowie loved Strange's unique look, and hey presto, Strange appeared in the video for Ashes to Ashes. Soon after, he got his recording contract and the rest is history. The two men remained friends through the decades that followed.
Tar was released NOV 1979 on Radar Records Visage finished the debut album and Fade to Grey was released in 1980 The Blitz Club presented Spandau Ballet Dec 5th 1979 all the records came out in 1980 Ultravox Vienna Gary Numan Spandau Soft Cell Depeche Mode all had hits Bowie was aware and came to the Blitz Club as he did go to Romy Haag Berlin and a few in London in the 70s
R.I.P Steve Strange he was at the front of the New Romantics Scene and he had a Night Club in London that all the cool New Romantic Movement started and David Bowie was influenced by it Steve and Boy George Culture Club both appear on the David Bowie Video Ashes To Ashes Song.

I was 4 days from my 15th birthday (release date 14 Nov 1980) and broke a window with the bass line towards the end (oops). I have the original vinyl and this has to still be my favourite song ever.
I can’t here or see this without doing the hand actions across my face from the video! Great song.
Try Gary Numan's "Cars" and "Are friends electric", he paved the way to synth new wave pop.
Yes, Gary Numan "Cars", "Are Friends Electric", "Down In The Park" or even his recent "My Name Is Ruin" with his daughter Persia. It ain't for nothing that Gary is called "the most sampled" artist in the world.
When you mention new wave and the french in the same video it got me thinking you should really check out Plastic Bertrand and his hit song Ça plane pour moi (which he does dressed in pink), one of few french songs charting in the US.
plastic Ferrand and the song come from Belgium
sorry Bertrand
Oh yes remember it well even though I didn't understand the lyrics. Like 1978 or so.
Lovely hearing this again. If you like this Visage song try Mind if a Toy. Awesome
You should of watched the official music video, This is such a classic song.
One of my favourite tracks of the Uk new wave, a time of endless creativity, fantastic originality and openess to continental languages in UK mainstream music. This song stands the test of time and yes I have danced my ass off to this!
Saw Chris Payne perform this a couple of years ago at the royal Albert hall supporting gary numan. An iconic song from my childhood x
Great synth pop classic ! Midge Ure (from Ultravox) is behind this project ! When are you doing an Aurora video again (maybe my suggestion) ? Best wishes : Gerry
Finally!! Thank you
This was always great to dance to in the clubs.
I swear they'll go on your playlist:
Just An Illusion - Imagination
Babe We're Gonna Love Tonight - Lime
Desire - Ronni Griffith
And Born to be alive by Patrick Hernandez
Flashback...
@@jeanpeuxplus7257 - especially the Hitler remix! Very funny
Loved watching you react to this song Dereck! But the ultimate would be to see you react to the 80s era after going back in a time machine😁
Exactly ! I was love to listen this song in night in the car :)
Really hypnotic track.Epic,Camden Palais is where they all hung out, I saw him there one, cool bloke.
Greaaaaaaaaaaaaat ^^ After this one you just can't miss Plastic Age by The Buggles (also, Radio Killed The Radio Star). Nice synth too :)
And if I manage to build a time machine one day I keep a seat for you :)
Was teen when the new wave wave come's. This song is one of my favorite. 80's was the real 21th century, epic and fantasmatic, now on our fade reality we just can leave grey ;) Kiss from France Dereck
