*VISAGE* meant SO much to me as a teenager in the early 80s. Growing up in a small farm town in the middle of no-where America, I felt like I 'Found My Tribe' when I found Visage's music, and Steve Strange's style was a huge influence on me. *Midge & Visage* - THANK YOU for your profound impact on my life!
Oh my goodness! This is so cool, huge congratulations to you! What a very special reaction for you and all of us! Fade To Grey is so awesome. As are the songs 'If I Was' by Midge Ure and also 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes' Midge Ure/Ultravox.
Thank you Jay & Amber. That was awesome. I love getting more history on the songs I loved as a teen. I have also hooked my 8 year old son on Fade to Grey, so the song will live on.
Perfect and professional way to arrange the video - much better than having the artist sit (perhaps somewhat awkwardly) in a window watching you two react with you knowing he's "looking over your shoulder". Great song too. Always loved it, and Ultravox - and Midge. Fascinating to hear some of the backstory.
What I love about you both, Jay & Amber is your perspective is so fresh. We tend to FADE TO GREY as we get older and so your view of the sounds and the lyrics is spot on. I think it is interesting to watch Tim and Midge react to you both reacting to these songs because I think they are as impressed as I am by your perspective. Great job!
Oh Midge Ure, my pre-teen and teenage girl crush ... I was 9 when Vienna came out, and my older brother was a fan, so of course I was a fan too. Then I found out he was Scottish and that was it ... he was my absolute hero! Still to this day, I get a wee flutter of emotion whenever I hear or see him. The amazing thing about Midge is the timeline of his musical career, collaborations and creativity. Who would have thought the same guy would be involved in Visage and Ultravox AND Thin Lizzy almost concurrently. Then throw in Band Aid, Live Aid and his role as Musical Director for the Princes Trust concerts, wrangling such amazing artists as Eric Clapton, Elton John, Peter Gabriel ... what an absolute legend of a man ... yep I'm completely still in love with him!
Love it, Elaine! As I've commented elsewhere, I'd never been able to get it straight in my head when Midge was involved with Thin Lizzy, Visage and Ultravox - so to discover now that this is because he was, essentially, doing all three at the same time makes me feel a bit better about that 😆
This is one of the songs that made me start to love electronic music back in my childhood. It's just so good! I got cassette tapes with sort of cover versions of electronic music (from a label called Arcade I think), with just instrumentals and no voices and this song was on one of those tapes, along with many songs by Jean Michel Jarre, like Equinox and Oxygene. The songs: "Axel Foley", "Crockets Theme" were also in there and hooked me in since I already knew those from the Eddie Murphy movies and the series Miami Vice.
Great to see a clip of 'Are 'Friends' Electric'...would be great to see your reaction as it was a major record at the start of the synth revolution...love your channel too by the way !
Yes, seconded absolutely - I immediately thought the same thing about Are "Friends" Electric? when I saw that clip. Just like Fade To Grey, it's a towering high water mark of synthpop and it would be great to see Amber and Jay's reaction to it.
This is just such awesome history. Incredible to think that Midge was involved with all those projects simultaneously. Such creativity....He was obviously very busy and ambitious. Edit: I like a good deal of Midge's solo work too. "Dear God" is an excellent track I'd also recommend!
Btw, Midge Ure makes a funny guest appearance in a single episode of a nutty, zany UK 80s sitcom that starred Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson (from 'The Young Ones' and also 'Bottom'). The show is called 'Filthy, Rich and Catflap' and all six episodes are here on TH-cam. Midge appears in episode 6.
@@normandavidtidiman9918 Ty. I re-watched last week here on TH-cam. Bit dated now, obviously. But still had a ton of laughs in it. Rik Mayall is superb in it, he's so good at playing someone talentless.😅
This reactions are absolute joy. Thank you for doing them guys. I've love Fade to grey ever since I first heard it and had no idea of the Midge connection.
Midge is touring the states at the moment . Would be great if you could get to see him live. Saw him last year in London for his 70th birthday show and he still sounds as good today as he was in the eighties
That was outstanding. MIdge is a legend. Excellent insight in the reaction Amber. I'd never even thought of it, possibly because I have heard it from young. So thanks for that! I would love to see more Tony Visconti on one of your Bowie reactions if that's possible.
I grew up loving Fade to Grey in the UK - there was a lot of stuff like this at the time but this was the best - it's just the most 80s song and my favourite! Great seeing this reaction to the reaction... Interesting use of the term "new wave" as that was sorta used for bands like Blondie
Oh wow guys, this is great. I've never been able to quite untangle, mentally, the timeline or extent of Midge's involvement with Thin Lizzy, Visage and Ultravox respectively, so apart from anything else this was a really useful little history lesson! And obviously it's lovely to see how pleased he was with your reaction to Fade To Grey. Now, PLEASE tell me you also got them recording Midge's reaction to your reaction to Vienna...?!
This is great. I've often wondered what artists and producers think of reactions videos and reactions channels and could not shake the feeling that they lust enjoy to see younger generations discovering their works and getting interested in past music eras. I am glad I wasn"t wrong and I hope it proves there is a future for reaction channels, despite all the copyright issues that they have to face, to bring us fresh takes and eyes and make us (re)discover music.
It is so cool to see bands like Visage reviewed that were obscure back in the day. Bands like this were hidden secrets that could only be heard at certain clubs. It is such a treat to see these music artists on your channel and get so many insights on how tracks came to be👌 Thank you, Jay & Amber!
Midge Ure's Breathe got a lot of airplay, at least in Europe. It was used in some famous ad campaign, and it was a beautiful song that deserves to be remembered.
This has to be one of my favourite records and I was a DJ in a nightclub during the late 70s and early 80s and played this record a lot and their other tunes. It went well with tunes from Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Japan, duran Duran and B movie.
Thanks for reacting to "Fade to Grey", and to both Tim Sommer and Midge Ure for giving the background to Visage and the single. Always happy to hear mention of the Mancunian band, Magazine. Too few people know or even remember Howard Devoto (from Buzzcocks), John McGeogh (later with Siousxie and the Banshees), Barry Adamson (later with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds), Dave Formula, John Doyle. I hope somebody will react to some of their songs from the four classic albums and the one newer release. From 1977 to 1981 Magazine changed their sound and evolved a post-punk style that was different from everybody. I still also like Gang of Four and other post-punk outfits, too, but Magazine was special. And I was surprised and impressed that Magazine reunited in 2008, released a new LP (No Thyself) in 2009, and then disbanded again. I saw the band in concert in 1980, but was already very impressed with their LPs and singles. Here's a link from a concert in 2009 playing an old song from 1980, "Sweetheart Contract". th-cam.com/video/uX7io5zhlYg/w-d-xo.html
The song not only stands the test of time, but the visuals have been influential as well. The body art in the video? Gotye did something very similar for his "Somebody I Used to Know" video. So Visage continues to inspire today's music!
It was really quite different when it became a hit in the earliest part of 1981. I thought of New Wave as a catch-all of a wide spectrum of post punk bands and rather more guitarry than synth-driven.
Visage was my favourite band living in a country town in Tasmania, Australia. The rest of the kids thought I was weird getting into electronic music etc

A wonderful tale again from Midge Ure, about the whole track being a last minute addition... and then the French translation lyrics by Rusty's girlfriend being a last minute addition within it 🙂
In several of these creator videos Kraftwerk has been mentioned.
