Hi everyone! Let me know if you have any questions about modeling stairs in SketchUp in the comments below! :)

Doing a project that requires these skills and you happen to recently post this! Thank you so much ☺️

For intermediate rails, I like to copy/move the first vertical rail up to the top, as you did, and then use the slash (e.g. /4) to equally distribute the copied rails along the span. Also, I personally prefer to use a diameter that's a bit thinner than the main rail to avoid any ugly intersection.
One last thing: for making the emptied out space under the stairs, I much prefer to follow the rise and run of the stairs, rather than just eyeballing that angle. I'll usually draw a line down a foot or so from the back of a step, then do the same for the next step, then connect the two with a line and extend it out to run below the other steps.

Thanks for this short clip on stairs. Very helpful.

find it much easier to draw a vertical line the total height of the stairs you need, divide it into the number of steps you want and than push pull every thread you layed out on the ground to the reference points you made with the vertical line. That way you eliminate all error.

Make rectangle first step>copy this rectangle as next step >to this second rectangle give a height say 1 inch> multiple copy the next step to the desired number of steps required > select all steps now scale in z axis to the landing g level. Fastest method.
I do this in blender. Same workfliw Can be used in sketchup as well.

Thanks Justin. Much better than the method I used.
I have a question, but it isn't about stairs, it's about animation. How would you animate the motion of a coffee table top that uses "lift hinges". As the table top opens, it moves in 2 axes simultaneously and it's giving me brain fry. Hope there's a reasonably simple solution. Thanks again and keep the great videos coming!

Use scenes.. and copy and paste the pieces that are moving and hide the unused pieces in each scene and animate that

Solid old school techniques. Is there a plugin or preferrably a DC that will calculate the proper rise and run for you (hopefully using the ADA standards for legal compliance or something similar ).Every plugin or DC I've seen only does the math manually or never lines up the overall height without making you fuss with the details to make it work.

There is a live component that allows you draw code compliant stairs. You can find it in the Warehouse search, for live components/stair.

Hey Justin! A bit confused by the video. The making the stairs part doesn't take into account a real world scenario of having to figure out first the correct riser height divided into the total stair height, you just have it setup to show it without having to figure it out in your video with your 6" riser heights, but every user of sketchup making stairs to be accurate would have to first figure this out (the riser height and calculations)... With a plugin you can click 3 times from the moment the user is ready and the stairs are made to the correct riser height and are to code with parameters specified and the stairs are done..... I feel like that's much faster than the tutorial you have here, maybe I am missing something though.....

I need to move cube, select base corner. How can I select destination easily...
