- i love dwarf fortress and the community, so i REALLY wanted to join in on the fun that they're having at r/DwarfFortress - especially with all the memes 😭
nothing like a good monday morning to wake up the firey pits of heck 😇
dwarf fortress is a game that i played before and loved, and while it does contain a lot of story telling elements like the Crusader Kings games do as well, there's something really fun about painting the map in a different way than you would in Hearts of Iron or other paradox interactive games.
(although i still maintain that CK2 and CK3 are basically the same as storytelling games like this and the sims 4 or whatever lol)
and it's a classic game that inspired a lot of more popular games like minecraft and stuff too so, I'm super glad it got a steam release eventually (and congrats to the OG brothers for finally getting rich off it, good work y'all)

A lich dwarf joined my fortress, got a strange mood, went mad, and now runs around babbling and has been for years. He’s relatively harmless
This exact thing happened to me, i missed a strange mood and now for over 50 years he's run around the fortress babbling while his family continues on as if nothing happened. Once the game soft-locked (as it eventually does) I turned to DFhack and while messing around with that I flipped his mood back to normal and it was like nothing had ever happened.
Man walks around quoting Dracula Flow to those that'll listen to him.
I relate to that on an emotional level I too have a tendency to babble to myself a lot but have tendency to be a rather tame and harmless person.

I've got a story about a forgotten beast made of flame, pretty similar to what was shown here, except mine had wings. It was rampaging around the first cavern layer, burning everything and vaporizing the cavern lake all the time. I had the bright idea to use this moment to carve some fortifications to the cavern lake so i could access its water safely. It was the only source of water for me, i was in a mountainous area with no ponds, no aquifers, no brook/river. However, i didnt think that the 4 deep water on the other side would be much of a problem. As i had two dwarves finish carving the fortifications, the water flushed in and slushed back, forcing a dwarf through the fortifications and out to the cavern lake.
It was my baroness who was a crutch-walker after earlier encounters with agitated animals. I quickly set up a plan to dig and opening to get her out of there but before it could be done, the forgotten beast found her. What followed was a few skillful dodges by the baroness but without any way to fight back she was practically doomed. Until the forgotten beast set fire to a mushroom tree near it, causing it to collapse and the force from the collapsing propelled the FB towards the nearest cave wall, smashing it into nothingness.
I was so dumbfounded by this i didnt understand what had happened and just thought the FB flew off somewhere. It was only later as i went through combat logs did i realise what had happened. The baroness made it out with only a few bruises from the Fire Beast.
I once had a giant monster made out of fog attack my fortress. This was only a month or two after I had embarked, so I only had like 12 dwarves and barely anything set up to be able to kill the monster.
I was also freaking out because how was I supposed to kill something made out of fog? It wasn't like there was magic I could use to kill it, and I didn't have any silver weapons that would normally be effective against stuff like werebeasts.
I figured that I would just wall off the entryway leading to my little fort and then try to survive from there, and just hope that the monster wouldn't smash through. I got most of my dwarves into the fort before I had to wall it off, but unfortunately a toddler hadn't been able to make it in time and so was stranded outside. I then went about quickly trying to set things up to survive, and by the time I finished that I realized something weird had happened.
The toddler was still alive.
I checked the combat logs and saw that the monster HAD been attacking the toddler. It just turned out that monsters composed of stuff like smoke or fog (or any sort of gaseous substance) couldn't really deal much physical damage.
Monsters composed of fire can kill by burning you when they punch and monsters composed of poisonous gas can kill you through poison, but they don't really deal much damage from the punches alone. And monsters made of completely harmless stuff like fog can barely do anything.
During the time after I had abandoned the toddler, the monster had just been going crazy attacking them. But the monster was so weak that they were just barely managing to knock the toddler over. And the toddler hadn't even gotten bruised or scraped because they had several layers of clothing on. I don't even think the toddler was particularly upset over being attacked, either.
After that I realized that there wasn't any danger, so I broke down the wall and had one of the adult dwarves go take care of the monster. The dwarf killed it instantly with a single punch.
My last and greatest fort to date ran into an unexpected problem in the form of an 8 year old dwarf girl. She suddenly became prone to temper tantrums and would break objects and throw items and assault passersby. I thought surely she would get over it but this continued for a while until I started to get very annoyed. Even though I couldn't really arrest her I thought I would have the guard captain haul her in for questioning and that might be enough to set her straight. The little girl then decided she would break the captain's arm and beat them within an inch of their life. Impressed at the fighting spirit of this little girl I let her go hoping to one day recruit her into the army. However one day as she was crying to the mayor she snapped and literally beat him to death. This mayor was one of the best dwarves in the whole fortress and so I could not abide by this. She was immediately sealed in her bedroom until she died. Of course her memorials were painstakingly crafted and her last rites delivered as though she wasn't some kind of inhuman monster because I'll be damned if I'm gonna have her haunt my fortress 😅
Most people stage an 'accident' when dwarfs become a problem.
Awesome video. I had my first giantess attack. She squashed a dwarf wandering around and one of my goblin poets. While waiting for my military squad to show up, a completely unarmed unarmored swordsdwarf jumped out of my surface fortification and stated fistfighting the giantess. Remember that this lady is 400 times his size. He busted her leg and then dodged until she collapsed from exhaustion, at which point he beat the giantess to death with his fists.
The rest of his squad didn't even show up yet.
I plunked a few gold statues in his room and gave him a dining hall of his own.
God, I wish I was that first dwarf.
one time, back in teh asqii days, i had a priest get in a mood kill a demon with a boulder use said boulder to make a stone slab and then when i inspected it he draw himself killing said demon on it.
Whatever religion he's a priest of, I want to join it.
8:06 one time i had a amphibian man representative show up and the only skill that showed up was legendary cheese maker. this creature only had done 1 thing in the 5 years of its life, and that thing was making cheese. and also ambushing for some reason.
Maybe he didn't make the cheese but hunted it
5:01 I actually preferred pure ASCII mode back in early 2010s, before kicking the DF habit for good.
After you get used to it, you realize that colored symbols encode information much more conveniently and efficiently than tiny graphic sprites. You don't even see the code: all you see is blacksmith, carpenter, rampaging wereemu...
That said, 10 years later I tried vim and _liked_ it.
So playing DF in ASCII might have some crippling long-term side effects.
This is only a mere glimpse into the madness that is Dwarf Fortress.
Five times now, my captain of the guard has filed interrogation reports implicating himself in plots hatched while he led the subject to his office for the interview. This game never ceases to amaze me.
The vampire in the lever room is great until he has a tantrum from low mood, leaving the drawbridge up right before a siege.
Thats why there is a second lever room, his levels just make him feel important.
Build your lever room right next to a deep-fortress meal hall where they hang out on break. There will always be a nearby dwarf who can pull the levers. Or, you can staff a lever room, assign a handful of dwarves specifically to these levers when needed, and just have him/them hang out nearby, always ready for levers.
5:01 i still play vanilla dwarf fortress with ascii graphics and i dont see anything wrong in it, there's just something that makes me like this tileset (also the screenshot is just premium dwarf fortress but without the tileset and other textures which makes some things like walls, gravings, and other stuff like that oddly weird maybe like thin or something)

ASCII is just something I am more used to. Also I feel like some fortress designs just look better in ASCII

I forgot how before booster rails, we used to have to rig up these weird curved rails and like these adjacent extra rail rings with a second minecart.
I guess when another minecart came by, they clipped into each other and flung away???

So, fairly new to Dwarf Fortress, yeah? My funniest moment so far involves a dead Doorfus. He died to another enraged doorfus, and as I was putting him in a tomb, I noticed something was odd. There wasn't a skeleton in it like the others. It was just his upper and lower teeth. Made me speculate what the hell the other dwarf did to him that completely left him nothing but a pile of teeth. But after a short while, his mangled skeleton was thrown into the mix.
This video was kind of like therapy for me. It’s good to know there’s others out there. What I wanna know is there a hard cap to the trees you cut down that causes agitated animals or is it a seasonal number like what the elves will give you?
I once cut 3840 gems just to make a sprite animation out of gem windows.
My god is working with gems in that manner annoying, but at least my friend who made the original sprite loved it.
i had a blessed fort as my very first fort. It rained alcohol, my dwarves were never angry, also I had a small pond of endless turtles which was my primary export. turtle shell jewelry. I haven't continued it but it has not fallen yet.
In a fort of mine I had a dwarf giving birth to a dwarf child.
Nothing exciting, right? Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that A DRAGON HAD JUST MURDERED EVERYONE.
The mother went head *on* to fight right after "cutting off the cord", and became head *less* after the fight.
The baby remained to starve, trapped in the remains of the tavern by flames blocking every doorway.
It was my first baronate too..
But the dragon trapped itself in the warehouse, and started wheezing on the smoke.
Chances are, that if I re-embark that area after say 100 years, I might get my baronate back

I still play DF classic. Couldn't even tell you the update version I'm on. It was a major pain in the butt to get it to even work in the first place on MacOS, can't remember how I did it, and dammit, that's not something you just lose

In the original version, a blob made of fire is not really a problem, the only thing is that the first dwarf who hits it will make the blob explode and will most likely die from the blob explosion :v.

Dwarf Fortress is the greatest game of all time and I'll defend that fact with my life.
TBH I liked pre-steam DF on lazy newb pack more than the current version, because it had sprites as well, so the graphics was a bit more clear than ASCII version, but it also had utilities like Legends Viewer, letting you easily browse legends, while looking at the world map, checking out populations and stories as you go.
It would be entertaining if you did a run. Love your videos

Is there an Elf equivalent to Dwarf Fortress?
I recently got into Songs of Syx. There's a free demo that's just the entire game but outdated by two versions. I just pulled one of my first accidental all nighters playing the demo, it's that good 😬
Like dwarf fortress with an easier learning curve with an emphasis on tons of population and less on story (but crazy stuff still happens!!). There's elves, dwarves, humans, pig people, giants, bug people, fish people, and 2 others I think I can't remember but they all have different cultures and wants
I will warn you though the elves aren't so much the graceful pure kind and more of the nature warrior and cannibal kind 😂
