Yeah, I don't know why boxers today want to have huge bodybuilder muscles. They clearly don't help with power and fuck up your speed agility, and stamina.
Rocky genrally had a narrow body structure. We dont all have the same body and some people just take steroids, it isn;t as black and white as that. Take Mike Tyson, he wasnt just a black marciano who did steroids, he had a larger frame that allowed bigger muscle tissue insertions and naturally wider shoulders and ribcage.

He didn't "duck" anyone. Liston wasn't ranked and didn't deserve a title shot...period. As far as Patterson, Cus d'amato wanted no part of Marciano and his plan for Patterson was to wait until Rocky retired and fight for the vacant title. Rocky took on every top contender of his era and beat them ALL. A feat no boxer has achieved since.
@@bunkman64 he might've fought all the fighters past their prime but that's because he fought legends like jersey joe and archir moore. Those guys were dominating the heavyweight division for years. its a fact that rocky had the greatest conditioning for a boxer in history.
I think you have me confused with another commenter. I have been defending Rocky and his record for YEARS.
It's amazing to see the shape and condition he was in without any of the modern technology we have today. No supplements, no strength and conditioning coaches, just good old fashion roadwork.

Best conditioned fighter who ever lived.. 49-0 43 KO's...champ from 1952-1956. HUGE heart....great stamina...great power...great chin...broke bones and blood vessels...very high work rate...never took a backward step...just kept coming. Classy and humble guy outside the ring. Died in airplane crash on August 31, 1969...the day before his 46th birthday.

Jose Cedillo Yes, it helps with explosiveness. If you're in the city, away from nature the best thing to do is get some moderately heavyweight for an adjustable dumbbell and do snatch and press with them in power intervals of 1, at least 10x's. This way, you are training the nervous system to fire more muscle fibers which= more power. However that being said the focus should be speed and then power.
Marciano is an excellent example of what a man can accomplish only by his will and determination.He fought with heart.Anabolics were not an option back then.The only way up was the hard one.He shows that everything is possible.

The choice of music for this montage is really good. So much better than the loud, in-your-face rubbish that normally accompanies these boxing videos. It reminds me of the opening of raging bull. It is also rather poignant, seeing this man in the prime of this life, smiling and training, knowing that his life would be cut tragically short. A great video all around, needs more views and appreciation.

My motivation when i hit the heavy bag is Rocky Marciano , kept me going for 30 years.
Rocky Marciano was one very strong dangerous fighter. I wouldn't want to fight or get hit by him. I can't think of one fighter who could beat him in a 15 round fight if it went 15 rounds. His endurance was tremendous. He was just as dangerous in the 15th round as he was in the earlier part of the fight. You had to kill him to win. He'd fight you to the bitter end.

Everything Rocky did in training had a purpose. Analyze how he moved his head on the speed bag. See how he uses the exact same movements in his fights. It wasn't just power in his hands which were very small and fragile. It was the positioning from where he threw his shots. Notice how his inside boxing on the heavy bag was meant to breakdown and destroy his opponent never giving them a chance to breathe. More so than just outworking his opponent he would out think the unfortunate man. I mean.. If it came down to it he'd just crush your head with the overhand right and don't think you could hide. Ducking or leaning down to avoid his punches would result in a smooth bludgeoning to the back or top of the head as seen in his KO of Ezzard Charles. He was always thinking in the ring. A true professional. I won't say he's the best ever but I can say he was a blessing to the sport. Someone any boxer from any era could learn from. RIP ROCKY..

You can teach someone how to throw a punch right. You can teach somebody how to bob and weave, and slip punches. You can teach footwork. You can't teach heart, desire, and a "never-say-die" attitude. And Marciano has more heart than almost anybody in his era. The guy just flat out wouldn't quit.
What a great fighter he was. What a great champion. My favourite fighter of all time.

Actually Stallone got his inspiration for the Rocky character from a club fighter named Chuck Wepner. He got a shot at Mohammad Ali and knocked Ali down in the 9th round with a body shot. Marciano is one of my all time favourite fighters, The first jersey joe wallcott fight and the 2 ezzard charles fights really stand out, I have them on DVD, There great fights to watch real classics.

What made marciano really strong wasnt his body size, they said his back muscles were really amazing. must be where he got his power from.

In boxing speed and power comes from central nervous system in your head, experience in a boxing ring, and punching technique. So talking about muscles here is absolutely pointless.

@@chrismcfaggons6694 that is correct friend Mayweather did beat Marciano’s unbeaten streak but to me The Rock had a legacy of toughness, endurance and shown a lot of dexterity when outmanoeuvring and brutally KOing his opponents - in that sense of the word I believe his legacy is still unchallenged.
It's impossible to fully appreciate the level of determination and the pure, unadulterated HARD WORK required to achieve Rocky's level of fitness. I believe most of what makes elite athletes great is a product of nature - can't be taught/learned. But extreme fitness is not as dependent upon superior genetics, so it *can* be achieved if one has the iron will and single-minded purpose that drove The Brockton Blockbuster! A good - but not great - natural athlete...5"10"...68" reach..not graceful...not especially quick or fast..and fighting [and BEATING] the heavyweight champs of his era at an average of 185 lbs! It simply doesn't matter where Rocky Marciano ranks among the all-time greats. Those are academic arguments never to be won. What matters is this man absolutely *maximized* his potential, which can [and should] serve as a genuine inspiration for all of us.

In spring of 1955 went with my father to watch Rocky Marciano train for the May Hvwt title fight against Brit champ Don Cockell. The fight was in SF but Marciano trained in Calistoga, 25 miles north of Napa, CA. This was Italian country, and I remember Marciano riding up and down the streets of Napa in a Lincoln convertible. A crowd gathered and you'd think Garibaldi himself had arrived.
I'll never forget Marciano's punching power close up; he knocked the bag off the hook...KO'd DC in 9.
Humans were never meant to fly, two of my hero's dead from crashes, Rocky in a plane crash, SRV in a helicopter crash, sad times :(

People in my community during way back were pretty bad trust me
Toughness or no toughness is simply AWARENESS.
Back then, the tolls of fighting its accompanying injuries were far less known. If you arent AWARE of your pain and how it is slowing you down then you can and will be tougher.
Even the simple thought of “why do i do this for a living” which enters every fighter’s, military man, or person who otherwise risks his life for a living was far less apparent because there was simply far less opportunity back then. Not to mention not everyone was saying “you can be whatever you want to be”.
You were what you were and were proud of it. No social media to approve of what you do for a living or even what you did that day.

Used to watch this when I was 18 so about 12 years ago, had been boxing for 3 years, crazy coming across this video again. Memories :') thanks for keeping this one up
The Rock's high level training and incredible stamina gave him the ability to keep coming on even during brutal, long fights. His opponents would marvel at Rocky's ability to keep throwing punches at a fast clip so there was no escaping because he never backed up. He was strong but he was lean. He was losing on points to Jersey Joe Walcott who was a brilliant defensive fighter and a great boxer but Marciano kept comin until he caught Walcott with a crushing right that ended it, one of the most devastating punches in boxing history. Jersey Joe was a bigger man but Rocky stalked him until he finished it. 49-0
I firmly believe that he would have defeated Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali in their prime. Marciano is definitely the hardest puncher in boxing history.
Rocky was a humble human person/ feeling for others.
Just looking at his body, you can tell that he was pure in every workout. He was one in a million and never lost a single fight. A great champ. r.i.p.

Ezzard Charles was only about a year or two old than Marciano. Walcott was the champ when Marciano took his title. The dude was phenomenal!
Walcott was 38 (!!) when he lost the fight. If a 38 year old Walcott can outbox Rocky for 13 rounds, then a young fast strong Walcott should have no problems with him.
@@TheRuljo age wasn't relevant, he fought the best fight of his whole career until the ko. His speed and footwork was there, his defense was great as well as his head movement and counter punching. Also dont forget that rocky didnt start boxing until he was 25 so it wasnt like he had the advantage in experience. Rocky was unnaturally tough and had incredible endurance as well as power. Also joe had a weight advantage. He was heavier and faster than rocky at 38 and if he was 28 he would have had the same advantage. It didn't work at 38 and it still wouldnt work at 28. Anyway Joe was better in his later years though. Had his most impressive fights and won the belt.

Simply the Greatest Who Ever Lived, bar none.
I know I am going to get a lot of hate for this but Ali would of beat him, Liston would have beat him, Foreman would have beat him, Holmes would have beat him, Tyson would have beat him, Lewis would have beat him. How do you figure he is the best ever? He fought nothing but bums and only fought old men during his very brief title reign. This is the truth.
Stalker Walker Ok so in your opinion you would think that fighter A who is 30-0 who fought nothing but tomato cans is better than fighter B who is 28-2 but fought nothing but hall of famers? Quality rather than quantity is the ultimate signifier of boxing greatness.
***** all of the were on the down side of their career. The average age of his opponents in championship fights was 39!. Look at his record only 4 were against fighters in the hall of fame and they were all very old and past there primes. The 45 other fighters he faced were bums/journeymen. Can't come close to comparing this guy to the likes of Ali. Also his career was short, if he fought on for as long as Ali did he would have suffered several losses and nobody would be saying anything about him.

But when you bestow the title of "Greatest of all time" on him, that unequivocally assumes that you are comparing him to other fighters of different eras. You can't logically give him that title if your reasoning for such is solely based on what he did in his era alone. If you want the title you've put on Rocky to match your argument then you should call him, "the greatest fighter of his generation/era. Then I would have no quarrel with you sir. I am going to assume this is a HW discussion and not a P4P one, in which case Sugar Ray Robinson would be called "the greatest of all time" and no amount of subjectivity on anyone's part could change that fact.

I love this footage, this man knew his skills were not as good as some but Rocky,s durability, conditioning and sheer hitting power made up for all that.
We should mention his trainer Charley Goldman a great boxer in his day who changed Rocky,s technique, stance, balance.
Rocky will always be the main man in my eyes
His skills were great for his body type! If you do a film study on him you will see many subtleties in what he does, especially his defense and the way he set up punches. With his very low sideways crouch he eliminated a central line of attack from the other fighters jabbing and straight/overhand right hand and he crossed his left foot to gain distance with his left hook. Plus from that crouch he was able to throw his right from unorthodox angles that other fighters didn't train to defend from so his power took its toll and They were rarely un a position to be effective against him because of that. The experience must have been nightmarish and different while fighting him than it was to watch him. What the saw as flaws was actually his strengths.
The habit of stating some up and coming fighter would have beat Marciano is about as useful as saying if I had known today's lottery ticket numbers yesterday I would have won big time!. Many great fighters tried and failed to beat Marciano - he paid his dues- the guy was the one and only Heavyweight Champion who's ever retired undefeated- and no amount of wishing will take that title away from him. He was one great fighter and showing respect to him should be common sense but common sense isn't as common as it once was- especially in the younger fight crowd.

I also see these people criticizing him for retiring at the age he did,the fact is he was smart enough to know when he was losing his skill unlike most other champions who go until they lose 5 times,he is probably the only fighter to admit he couldn't keep up with all these younger fighters one after another.

I know how you feel Carey- like most things in live we don't really appreciate them until there gone. I have fought most of my life and love watching the old fight films- my favorite of all time has to be Jack Demsey- a man definitely ahead of his time- next Rocky Marciano followed by Mike Tyson.

Aikidobear129, it's the comment that makes most sense and best describes who and what Marciano is and did. In addition I can only say he started boxing at the age most of the legends then and now became champions. And for a short period of time he did what same those do for an entire career (around 20 years).

igor stein yes you are correct he had tree trunk legs and a strong torso his trainer States in his book stand still and throw a punch then use your legs and torso and throw a punch that's where his power came from also his trainer said Marciano would always train the legs and torso more than upper body he was only 5 10 but mentally very strong take care igor

This footage was shot at Grossinger's in the Catskills. The quonset hut at 3:45 is gone but the foundation is still there. No finess with him but you dont need finess to be a killer. He was just one rough and rugged guy with a body made of granite and and an endless gas tank. It must have been a nightmare of an experience for the guys that fought him
