First impressions of Slovenia VANLIFE | Overlanding Around the world drive [S5-E15]

- As we continue driving around the world in our campervan Trudy, we leave Austria and head over the mountains into Slovenia. Country number 6 on our around the world drive and number 22 for TREAD the Globe. What a beautiful country. We find some good wild camping spots, visit Predjama castle (amazing castle built into the cliff and was apparently featured on the Game of Thrones. We then head to the costal town of Piran, which is a must see place if you visit Slovenia.
This is by far the most challenging OVERLANDING VANLIFE Adventure travel series that we have ever done (and possibly on youtube) one that will definitely change us for ever more. Driving around the world is going to be both a physical and mental challenge and one that will test us to the limit.

I've been to Slovenia a couple of times and loved it, clean and relaxed, polite drivers, locals are pleasant and reserved. I described it to someone as a bit like Italy, but civilised. The capital Ljubljana is a wonderful little quaint city, I've never been to Predjama though, looks amazing. Happy travels!
We have really enjoyed our time in Slovenia and we have realised one thing on this road trip ... we will have to come back to visit all the countries in much more depth !! 😍💜🙌 Kind regards Marianne xx
Piran (pronounced Pi-RAN, stress on second syllable) looks like Venice as it was part of the Venetian Republic for 300 or so years. Venice was built using Istrian stone, Istria is the peninsula where Piran is located. The buildings in Piran also look like those you can see in Austrian cities as the whole area was part of Austria until 1918. Istria then was part of Italy, as well as speaking English, many people speak Italian fluently, the signs are bilingual Italian/Slovenian and Italian/Croatian once you go into the Croatian part of Istria.

The switchbacks on your sat-nav reminded me of a family trip to the mountains years ago. Our eldest daughter saw a tangled line on the screen from her car seat in the back and asked worriedly, "How are you gonna do that, Daddy?!" My reply, "I'm just going to do one corner at a time, Sweetheart." ❤

Predjama Castle (in village Predjama) was not in Game of thrones series, but it was visited by George R.R. Martin who loved it. Perhaps it will inspire his writing? In Postojna (a town close by with a famous cave) there used to be a castle (Adelsberg on Sovič hill) as well, but now there are only some ruins left of it. There is no castle in Piran, those are fortified medieval city walls. The little church at the top of peninsula that you visited has a bell tower that used to act as a lighthouse as well. Fishing industry, though present in Slovenia, is very tiny. There were already some comments about the food and traffic signs.... Good luck!

08:41 - that kind of a tomato sauce is called "Ajvar", made of red bell peppers, garlic and olive oil.
21:42 - the round sign stands for no stopping/parking allowed. The blue vertical sign stands for a "traffic calming area". Vehicles should not travel faster than a pedestrian speed. Pedestrians, including children, may use the entire street and children are permitted to play in the street.

I must say, great video. I have just something to say... When you were eating in Piran...This is not a local food. The name of restaurant is Sarajevo 84, so these are bosnian speciality, not local food. I don't know if you'll got enough time, but if you are still here, you have to check Ljubljana - capital city and Bled with a little island with church in the middle of the lake. Stay safe and enjoy our country.

ah great video lads, its a pity about lake garda, i was looking forward to it, mostly we would only have time to spend drriving the camper to spain from southern ireland, but if when we retire i hope to explore the world when we have more time, now we are just learning a few basic words in many launguages, my only hope that diesel will still be available by the time i retire, thanks guys i dont even bother with netflicks anymore,

Hi guys I have caught up with all your old videos. Absolutely love the video's you are one hell of a couple. I only watch TH-cam video's now they are much better than normal TV (i should get rid of my TV licence). Can I ask you 1 thing when you stop in a restaurant for a meal can you let us know how much the meal roughly cost per person so when I start my travels I will know which counties to eat out and which counties to avoid. If possible can you rate the meal and let us know if it was worth the money. The sausage and bean stew you had in Slovenia looked so lovely it's made me hungry lol. I do hope that when you'll be crossing controlled borders, you'll share, as best you can, the trials and/or eases experienced with those in charge, as well as any fees incurred. I follow a couple who're traveling So. America and it's been quite astonishing how varied each crossing is from the next.

sxtn102 don’t bother crossing borders between Peru and Ecuador it’s full of vile low class thieves incl the police are in cahoots with them. I lived in both countries several years. But crossing borders there is not pleasant especially the above one.

Hi Shabbir - thank you for your comment - we agree we need to show more information about expenses on the videos and will try and add more costs in - we do however share a blog every month with how much we spend and how much we earn - this can show people exactly how much we earn from renting our house and how much we make from TH-cam. Great video and yes, Slovenia is fantastic. The sign there is something we have a lot in Scandinavia too, mainly in cities. It's a sort of a "community street", which means its a combination of the neighborhoods playing ground for kids and a walking street. You are allowed to drive your car there but must drive very slow and respect the people in the area. A strange construction but I have never heard of any serious problems with them so I guess they work great.

Absolutely brilliant how Marianne can drive all over the world, in her right hand drive, on the left side of the road, in countries with driving on the RIGHT side of the road, with driving column on the RIGHT side. Make sense? Or maybe she avoid countries that drive on the RIGHT side of the road, eg. USA?

We really enjoyed Balkan food ... and the lady in the tourist office said that Balkan food is all similar .... when we went into the restaurant the lady was super helpful and told us which food was good to try 🙌😍🤗👍 Thank you for your comment 😉
