Live-action Disney Villains are kinda lame

  • Though there's definitely a pattern of the Disney live-action adaptations being frequently lackluster, the Villains are even more consistently mishandled.

Melissa as Ursula was the best portrayal. She was so unhinged and was scary. Also Cate was a close 2nd.

I wouldn't say she's scary. She was more comedic than intimidating and sinister in comparison.

Disney these days censors their villains so they don't hurt anyone's feelings. They made Maleficent sympathetic, feminist warrior; they made Jafar quiet and soft spoken, and Cruella became a cool fashion icon. Melissa McCarthy tried to stay true to the original Ursula but still turned out a more tame version. Disney can no longer create the new, original and distinctive protagonists, let alone villains.

Ursula and Gaston were probably my favorite villains so far Jafar was ok I guess and scar he was good but I hate how they disrespected his villain song

The casting for Jafar was awful, the absolute worst choice! 🤦 He didn't fit the character at all! I was so mad about his casting, especially after seeing the movie because he was one of my favorite Disney villains and they butchered him. It was atrocious casting and should have been met with more disdain than Hallie Bailey's casting, but our society cares more about people's appearances, then their performance and essence.
The main problem with some of these live action remakes is they are made by people who don't understand the source material. While Lady Tremaine was cast well, the filmmakers didn't understand that what made her so real, canny, and striking, and what made all her verbal and mental punches on Cinderella hit so hard was that she was settle and sneaky about it just like real abusers, that's why abusers fool so many people, they can put on an act and switch personalities like a hat. Still love live action Cinderella though! And the creators of the live action Beauty and the Beast did not understand the whole point of the original film was that Belle was a strong woman, but her strength was very subtle and mostly mental and emotional. The Beast struggles to be human he is like an animal, but Belle who is insightful and perceptive unlike the shallow people in the close minded small town she is from inspired him to be a better person and change with her actions and kindness. Because of Belle's perception, she knew there was more to the Beast and didn't respect him until he was genuinely kind and respectful to her. Hus first act of kindness was opening the library for Belle because he knew she loved books. He didn't do it to show off like in the live action, or make her like him, but because he wanted to make her happy. The Beast fell in love with Belle first, and while it took Belle much longer to fall for him, she was still kind to him, not out of fear or weakness, but because that's who she was. Gaston was superficial and entitled and tried to force Belle to marry him on the basis of her looks and while Belle was polite about it, she was very clear when she turned Gaston down. She was the only person in town who could look past his looks and charisma and see that he was a jerk, which is why the scene in the animated film when he threw her book in the mud was so important because it showed that Gaston didn't actually care about getting to know Belle and disregarded her interests. It was the Beast who chose to get to know her, encouraged her interests, and excepted and loved Belle for who she was. The live action film ruined this by having Gaston be kind to Belle in their first interaction and asking her what she was reading. Gaston would never ask that! The whole point of his character is that he only cares about himself and that's why Belle doesn't want to marry him. When in the original film, the Beast became interested in reading when Belle taught him (which deepened their connection) and opened a library to do something for her, in the live action film, the filmmakers decided to have the Beast mock the books Belle likes and show the library to her to prove he has better taste. It was unforgivable of the filmmakers and showed how much they misunderstood the whole point of the original film, the messages, nuances, and characters. Maybe its because in the age of social media, people forgot about the art of subtlety and nuances.
Don't even get me started on the disgraceful casting of McCarthy as Ursula! I love the actress, but she lacks the sass and pizzazz that made the villain so iconic. Queen Latifah would have been a way better choice!

I think Lady Tremaine and Maleficent were the most well done of the live-action villains. While Lady Tremaine was a little different and less snake-like than the original, I felt her performance was still so powerful, and Cate Blanchard really made the character her own instead of trying to copy the original cartoon character.
For Maleficent, while the green skin would have been a nice touch, I still loved her intimidating, yet beautiful character design. Angelina Jolie also did an amazing job portraying the character, and I love the depth added to Maleficent. However, that being said, I like that portrayal of Maleficent for that movie on it's own, not actually as a retelling or remake of Sleeping Beauty, if that makes sense. Maleficent is great as a standalone, but not great as a remake when compared to the original source material.
As for a couple other villains... the problem with Gaston was that I almost actually liked him. He was too humanized, to the point where it made it harder to fully hate and root against him. Heck, if I was Belle, I might've considered choosing him over the Beast! I also did not like the new Cruella. As mentioned in the video, she's more rebellious than evil. She also strongly states how she would never consider using actual dog fur, which defeats her entire character. As terrible as it sounds, when I was watching the movie, I actually hoped she had used the dolmation fur in her black and white outfit because that would have made her the real, villainous Cruella! Instead she just fell flat. Then lastly, Ursula did not do it for me. Her character was far too cartoonish, and every time she was on screen it pulled me out of the movie. She also just seemed like a cheap copy of the original, from her appearance to her acting. Meryl Streep definitely would've been a better choice. And Ursala has also been played by some incredible black actresses on the stage over the years, so they could've cast one of them instead too! It would make sense, and Halle would've no longer been one of the only black main characters in the movie.

As the most recent one- I felt like Ursula had sooooome things going for her in the unapologetically obviously a bad guy set up of her look and lair. I do wish they dropped the whole Triton’s sister thing because while I know some Disney nerds love and cling to that like this is the most canon law to ever exist… it adds NOTHING to the story. I always preferred to think of Ursula like a Jafar who’s already been caught. Someone who was respected in the palace but kicked out for being a striver.
But a big L is the make up and direction and I felt like Melissa McCarthy was torn between being a cartoon and being a standard Melissa McCarthy performance ala the whole “I got it!” Scene. She’s still not the weakest thing in that movie to me though that will always be daddy Triton and a face that cannot portray a single emotion.
But it has vibrancy fun and Halle which still makes it one of the best ones

Meryl Streep would have been a great Ursula! Melissa would have done better if she didn't try to do those mixed up accents and the song was more adjusted to her key of singing.

Honestly, the only thing that dissapointed me about Melissa's Ursula was the makeup; such a missed opportunity to recreate Divine's iconic Pink Flamingos or Female Trouble looks. Also, I'm a bit worried about the live action evil queen as its been confirmed that she sings and dances in the film. Not that such a character can't have a musical number but given the composers they went with for the new songs, I don't know. We shall have to wait and see.
