Nikki Caro said she didn't make "Mulan (2020)" a musical because she didn't know how to how to include music in a movie about a girl going to war, so anyone who would've went the musical route has my vote.

They should’ve gotten Chloe Zhao, the Director of the academy award winner Nomadland, and also the Director of the internals to direct to the live action Mulan, because she is very skilled at creating a story about a Chinese warrior who starts from scratch to become a warrior

I really don't feel like Rob Marshall was a bad choice because outside of the costuming and visuals TLM really worked for me. Sure would I have liked some extra scenes? Of course, but overall the film still made my heart sing. And without him, I doubt we would have gotten Halle.
His past work shows that he IS capable of giving us a more fantastical look to things too, so it's all the more a mystery how things went as south as they did for TLM. I know covid didn't help things but honestly I really get the impression there must have been some sort of internal struggle that we will never know of

I'm glad you enjoyed it - I definitely did to a certain degree (mostly because of Halle and the strength of the original property), but I have to strongly disagree about Rob. IMO, his previous works, especially his Pirates film, are a further testament to his directorial shakiness, lack of vision, and lack of soul. It definitely seems to be a skill issue because despite all the effort he claims to put in his films, the results always come across incredibly lazy. It's no surprise for me that he fumbled, but he did so more than even I expected. If anything, covid should've given them more time to polish and improve their ideas.

    • @TommyRoss

If the costuming budget was a concern, I certainly wouldn't have given Vanessa and Queen Selina more costume changes than Ariel (and those costumes were also more opulent and grand than anything Halle wears)... and even the EXTRAS in the engagement scene are wearing elaborate costumes that should've gone to Halle.

Del Toro sounds perfect for Beauty and the Beast and, if not him, I think Neil Jordan (Interview with the Vampire, The Company of Wolves) could have been a great choice as well. Overall, I really liked the cast of B&B but it would have been nice to see more french actors involved. Also, Céline Dion's version of "How Does a Moment Last Forever" would have been even better had it been sung in french. Talking about french, I wonder what happened to Disney's film adaptation of "Once on This Island" (a stage musical based on TLM set in the French Antilles). It was announced back in 2020 and both a writer and director have also been confirmed but nothing else.

My thing with basically every disappointing live action remake we’ve had is… what’s the point in even making a film if it isn’t potentially going to be someone’s favourite film of all time? Like I know I’m very much the film snob who’s thinking about direction and costuming and lighting and character etc and it’s that mindset that fuels people to make thinkpieces and video essays about how crass these films are but the people who like it who didn’t think too hard who just needed their kids entertained for an hour and a half or so… I don’t think there’s a single one of them who’d call most of these their favourite movie. And that’s a shame.
I can see Cinderella 2015 being someone’s favourite movie, I certainly love so much about it (they’re all looking at you, believe me they’re all looking at YOU… gets me every time). Little mermaid had glimmers of greatness from Halle’s performance and energy as Ariel, the chemistry between her and Eric and some shots are amazing like when she reaches out to the surface for the first time- but it’s let down by so much blandness and wonk cgi you’re so right to say this should’ve been a visual spectacle where people go no listen you NEED to see this movie!
I have hopes for Snow White where I’m hoping with Gerwig writing it it’ll be like barbie where we’re tapping into the identity of the Disney princess archetype but idk every update about that movie terrifies me

Keep in mind that the visuals of _Cinderella_ are suppose to be historical realism mixed with whimsical fantasy. And since it's also a fairy tale, it needs to look and feel cozy and warm. I don't see how anyone could have done a better job. Anything they attempt to "improve" would most likely ruin it.
