I finally tried out Geoguessr's "Duels" mode. It was lots of fun.

- See me bumble my way through Geoguessr's newest game mode in classic, confused Geowizard style. Success was mixed, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself throughout.

Geoguessr is kind of the reason I subscribed to GeoWizard, to see him play this gamemode has gotten me excited again!

I had no idea who NorthernLion was until a GeoGuesssr duels video of his was recommended to me… That guy is quite entertaining to watch (now I’m in deep, watching Super Auto Pets and his Sporcle videos too lol).I would love if NL and Tom steamed some duels together. I think they would make great conversation.
NL has learned a good deal of the GeoGuessr meta and is getting pretty decent, and might be a worthy opponent against a rusty Tom lol

@@Michael-kp4bd Norethernlion has a very long youtubelist of playing geogeussr aginst Invicta which were several series that went on for multiple years. It stopped months before he got into geogeussr duels. Their banter in it is great but skill and knowledge isnt as high as geowizard or other geogeussr youtubers (geopeter, Zigzag, RC, geographychallenges)

I see what you're doing here. Do you have any plans to expand on the concept? Add timestamps if you're not doing that already. Maybe do "get in" compilations. Count other memeable phrases like when he's "flapping"?

Tom guessing how things work in Geoguessr duels is both the funniest and most adorable thing ever
Rather a bit frustrating. He needed 2 rounds to even see the countdown timer after opponent's guess. Why not take 2 minutes to check any info before playing?

You actually played that healing round perfect. When you have full health you just guess anywhere ASAP. You cannot heal anymore and that limits the time of the other person to try and heal more

But surely the quicker you guess the less accurate you are so they're more likely to beat you by a wide margin and heal a lot themselves?
@@robbiedart7422 that's not how heal rounds work. They are different from damage, it only matters how close you get to the spot, not the difference between your guesses!

@@felixdawson8497 I really hope he doesn't split the channel. Having a second channel just for geoguessr wouldn't necessarily mean more of it since it's a time issue more than anything for him at the moment.
Splitting your viewer base often isn't a good idea as you just end up with less views for each video which limits your exposure via the algorithm. This channel started as Geoguessr and imo it wouldn't make sense to move that content to a 2nd channel. I love the real world stuff too and would rather have it all on one channel. He can have the one for shorts but this should always be his main channel for all other content
@@maxcarter5148 I agree about splitting the viewer base and was initially reserved about the idea. But when he announced it, if I remember right, he said that the content on this main channel would stay exactly the same, basically, with both genres, and that the second channel would allow for more frequent and less... impressive ? geoguessr vids. Unseen footage and bonus content, the sort that wouldn't make it on to the main, maybe the games that don't get used in the official videos and that sort of thing.
He put it across like it wouldn't decrease any geoguessr on this one, but it would just be a sort of Bonus Videos channel. The time constraints do seem like the real issue but here's to hoping for the future!
I'd love to just see a steady stream of unedited geoguessr duels either on this channel or a secondary channel. I just find Tom going through his thought process entertaining

You should do a weekly duel video. It's such an entertaining game mode
Some explanations: Every game you win or lose rating depending on your opponent's rating. There are the following divisions corresponding to rating: Bronze, Silver, Gold (around 675+ I believe), Master (850+), Champion (1100+). You can click on the leaderboard to see your global rank and who are top of the leaderboard, that's really cool.
The weekend series is separate to your global rank and every week you can qualify by playing a certain amount of games (to reach 75 qualification points) and then during the weekend you can play 10 games of each game mode which add points to your weekend series rank. This isn't that great as you have to play a lot of games every week and will have a huge disadvantage if you don't. So imo better ignore weekend series and just play Duels normally to improve your global rank. Also during the weekend they turn matchmaking for duels off, so better play and record in the qualification period (not on weekend) so you get matched with opponents similar to your rating, which is a lot more fun and better content.
Skill wise its probably breaks down into from my ~900 perspective
Bronze: Just barely learning the game, 9 out of 10 times game will be over before healing
Silver: Has picked up some meta, is probably good with certain regions but should be simple win
Gold: Knows most basic meta, is weak in a few regions but good enough to hang with anyone with lucky starting spots
Master: Knows all basic meta, some more complex, will very rarely be far off of spots but can be pressured into mistakes
Champ: Knows pretty much all meta, Top 100 players or so in world, good luck beating them without some luck
@@e_eyster as someone who has been in the champion division, I can say this is correct. Also when you are playing someone from master division or champion division dont try to rush it before you know the country. The extra 15 seconds after your opponent has guessed is vital for you.

@@damyr Maybe 60k or so? All I really know is at the time of posting this im a 917 and thats just a little inside of top 1k in the world. Most players tend to be silvers.
@@davedegoeij9721 Ive mostly found the opposite true in duels. Have beat top 50 or so players just extreme pressuring the entire way and then getting a good plonk on a 3-4x round to win. If you dont think you can over 4k it... I think you should always be guessing in about 20 seconds at a max, past that point you are trying to 5k
YES finally doing some Geoguessr again! Adventures are great too, but this is why I subscribed.

I don’t know about anyone else but I would watch these unedited , even if they were an hour long! Was gutted when you skipped those few games towards the end … can’t wait to see more of these!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this!! Some tips for a better experience: You can press space bar now to guess and you don't even have to press guess or space bar in duels, it automatically takes whatever you've logged in once the timer has run out. :)

hey Peter, when you see a number in between (XX) means it is from certain region of Brazil, for example: the last round was in São Paulo, the DDD (the number between the parentheses) was 13. This number changes between the states, in São Paulo usually is 11, 12 or 13, the middle west of Brazil is 62, Federal District 61, etc...
The sign he zoomed in on at 26:17 said the name of the city, "Santos/SP", so he wouldn't even have to know area codes, but of course it's not that easy to know what to look for in signs when you don't speak the language.

The biggest problem I is that you hesitate too much thinking if you should guess early or find the exact place. The time it takes you to decide, the opponent already got a guess. So either guess as soon as you know which country so they dont have the time to look for clue, this will result in more damage dealt, ofc its a coinflip, but in your favor cause youre already in the country atleast. Or get as close as possible, which results in safer play. Your weakness in general (I see this everytime in your videos) is when you play a new gamemode, you find it so hard to formulate a plan. Your skills are good, but strategy is a huge part also.
I don't know if it's because I'm Brazilian and it's easier for me but you should almost never go for the countryside when you're actually in a big city. Try going mostly for the coast line or look for at least a capital or big city when you feel like it's on the countryside.
You can also look for phone numbers and look for the first 2 digits. The first 2 digits are always the state code, meaning that you can narrow ir down to a much smaller place to put your guess. 81 is Pernambuco's state code, for example.
That first duel the guy knew the countries but pretty much just went capital city every time lol

In Geoguess very urbanized cities in Brazil are often located in the southeast part (São Paulo | Rio de Janeiro | Minas Gerais).
Grassy areas are often "Mato Grosso do Sul" and the arid ones are in the north-east part (Pernambuco | Bahia)
There was actually multiple occations of the region code "SP" on signs, meaning that he was in the São Paulo region :-)
Any other Kiwis crack up at his pronunciation of Dunedin 💀 it’s not even a Māori word

I know this is an old video but in Brazil they have area codes on the phones numbers to tell you which region you are in. You don't have memorize all 99 because they are grouped pretty well by tens. It might be worth a look to help narrow done one of the largest countries that frequently pops up on GeoGuessr

The guy that beat you just guessed the big cities and it was correct most of the time. I think that's kind of the format so newer players won't get discouraged. It could be a good tactic to try and guess for big cities after finding the right country.

On a side note: brazilian telephone area codes are relatively easy to use for pinpointing. State capitals almost always end in a 1, and the first digit determines the state. The area code there on the last round was 13, which means it was in the state of São Paulo (because it starts in a 1) but not São Paulo the city, which has an area code of 11

Hey Tom! Quick fun fact about the US Virgin Islands, (not the British Virgin Islands which you mentioned) is that they are the only US territory that drives on the left. From my experience playing GeoGuessr, you often times get a white Google car like the one at 12:05 on the island of St. Thomas (the top left island, with coverage usually in the capital city of Charolette Amelia). On the contrary, if you find yourself with a similar Google car that is red, you’ll oftentimes find yourself on the largest island of St. Croix. Hope this helps!

Awesome game mode, fun to watch. When you do more of these videos, please don't summarize them too much. I enjoy full rounds more than seeing some good guesses. Its much more tense to see a win happen from start to finish than just some in-between rounds. In-between rounds are like a painting without context.
