    *One year follow-up to the magnet situation*
    Magnets still doing their job, but I can't stress enough two points:
    1) COAT THE MAGNETS. Ideally a base coat of any kind of automotive touch-up paint, and a top coat of something rubberized, e.g. Plasti-Dip or liquid electrical tape. That rubberized coating will protect the paint on your car as the skirt molding may shift slightly whether from bumps or other vibrations, washing, etc.
    2) NEO MAGNETS ARE VERY BRITTLE. Install onto the vehicle with care. If you let them slap onto the surface of the car too hard, they can break.
    I stress the latter point because I did break one magnet during install and didn't realize it... several months later I discover the resulting corrosion made the skirt molding bulge quite a bit. I had extra so I replaced it. All other original magnets are still well. 👍

    Thanks for the video. I have followed each step just waiting for the rain to stop to install.

      Appreciate you watching. Please note in my description however, I had the wrong part number in the video itself for the smaller plastic fasteners (if you were to need replacements at all), and updated what should be the correct part number for them.
      The big retainers are still correct, and those aftermarket ones work just fine btw.

      Those are a factory 2016 Subaru Crosstrek wheel - they are the same specs as the stock Impreza wheels (if it came with 17s).
      They're a 17x7 wheel and would use a 205/50R17 tire size.

    Dude you make super awesome car mod vids very informative easy to follow along camera quality is great. The magnets are an awesome idea. Please do more mod vids!!! Also the magnets you ordered did they come with screws or did you have to buy them separately?

    • @sixgundave
      @sixgundave  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate you checking them out! I'm no video editor but hope to make vids that are at least informative and give somewhat simple directions.
      Magnets didn't come with hardware. What I did was take a magnet to my local hardware store and found some small screws, nuts, thin washers that fit the bill. One could use either brass or nylon hardware - something that the magnet wouldn't interact with during install.

      @@sixgundave I just got an Impreza wagon few weeks back and have been watching a lot of different videos on modifications. Glad I came across your channel hope to see what other mods you do in the future. I’ve been eyeballing the syms exhaust kit from Japan and there is not a single video on TH-cam on how it sounds or how it’s installed. Maybe that could be your next one

    • @sixgundave
      @sixgundave  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I had a manual trans, I'd consider swapping out the stock exhaust. I already dink around with a mustang for performance stuff like that, so with my Impreza it will likely be appearance mods, stereo components vids, other maintenance things. But, *might* consider lowering the car with coilovers or show how to choose the right size&offset wheel for these years of car. Stay tuned!

    Great video! I am looking at doing the same thing to my Impreza and am opting for the magnet route... What did you screw the magnets into though?

    • @sixgundave
      @sixgundave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, I appreciate you watching! So the inside of the skirt panel already has molded in "brackets" to snap OEM fasteners into. There is already holes in each of these areas. Just a matter of putting in a small-diameter screw and nut in to fasten the magnet onto these areas. I recommend brass hardware that can be found at local hardware stores, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.
      Remember.. N42 or N52 neo magnets! Each of my N42's have a bit over 9 pounds holding force.

    • @sixgundave
      @sixgundave  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate you watching - yes good neo magnets were a life saver for my project.
      Buy more than you need, maybe 20, because if these magnets slam against a surface too hard, they can break. Can be somewhat brittle.
      Once you install the magnets onto the skirt panels with something like brass hardware, it's a great idea to coat the surface of the magnets where they come into contact with the body with liquid electrical tape (its literally Plasti-Dip in a small can with a brush) - that will protect the body once installed.

    • @shadowveil478
      @shadowveil478 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How long are the brass screws?

    • @sixgundave
      @sixgundave  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shadowveil478 Its been a while since I did the project and I wish I would've included the magnet install.. but you don't have much room to work with. I bet the threads of the screw were maybe 1/4 inch at most - just long enough to get a small nut on the backside. Between the 1/8" thick magnet with a countersunk hole and the plastic bracket you're bolting into, you're probably bolting together about 1/8 inch of thickness.
      It's one of those things where once you get the magnets, take one into the hardware store so you can get screws that will also fit into the hole in each magnet. Flat top screws with a tapered back to match the shape of the countersunk hole. A thin brass or nylon washer on the nut side may be beneficial too. Good thing all that hardware is super cheap

  • @spence3795

    What screws did you use to fasten the magnets to the rocker molding?

    • @sixgundave
      @sixgundave  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wish I would have shown the magnet install, but what I did was take one magnet to the local hardware store, and found some small brass screws and nuts (or nylon, some non-magnetic style) that would fit flush with the magnet hole, and only long enough to fasten with a nut on the backside of the skirt's mounting points.
      Some info is added in my description for this vid, and be a good idea to watch my follow-up video for this as well.

    • @sixgundave

      Several websites offer them, as well as sellers on Ebay and likely Amazon. What you'd want is either N42 or N52, 1/8 inch thick, 1/2" x 1" with a countersunk hole. Get at least 20 just in case of accidental breaking.
      I forget the exact size of hardware, but one can buy non-magnetic fasteners, like brass or nylon, to attach them to the molding mounting points.

      There's a few sellers on ebay, but I had purchased mine from a website called k&j magnetics.
      You need a total of 16 if I remember, but I would get at least 20 as they are brittle if they slam against a surface too hard.. Either in N42 or N52 strength.

    • @sixgundave
      @sixgundave  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ordered the OEM moldings from Subaru, they came unpainted. Sport models come with them from factory. So if you have pearl paint especially.. this project can get a little spendy. That is, unless you can find a used pair from ebay or salvage yards.

      I'm not sure of the part # of the unpainted panel, I just know they start in 96051 / 96051a per Subaru's parts diagrams. Try this link and search body parts:
      parts.subaru.com/subaru_2017_Impreza/Body.html
      One however might have luck finding used ones on a place like eBay or local import salvage yard.

    • @sixgundave
      @sixgundave  ปีที่แล้ว

      The magnets are, more or less, a supplement hold - the big retainers that go on the underside do the main holding job. You would be okay taking it through a car wash, automatic or otherwise.
      But I will add - neo magnets are quite brittle. I had to replace one that had broken (perhaps during install when it slapped against the car? 🤷‍♂️) and it began corroding and bulging the molding at that spot. But I replaced that one magnet, and all is well again.
