    Hi Rachel that was so informative. I also appreciated you taking the time to actually sew a garment, for us all to see how it was done, using your Coverstitch. Brilliant.!
    As for the lemon top, I love it on you.

    Hi Rachel, the needles used on a coverstitch are longer than normal sewing machine needles. I just get mine from ebay. Just type in coverstitch needles and you will find them. They have a different code on them to normal ones, usually 705xl. Your manual should have the size your machine requires.

      angela earp I agree. The EL stands for extra long, I think. My Babylock works better with EL needles.

    Rachel! I’m beside myself with joy that you purchased a cover stitch machine. From what I’ve just read online, the one you bought is wonderful. There is a binding attachment foot that you can get for your cover stitch machine that will change your life. I bought one for my Baby Lock machine and think it’s just the neatest attachment ever! As for your needles.. “Serger needles are stronger than regular sewing needles as the serger runs at higher speeds. They're often also longer, as they need to be for the loopers to catch.” (I got this from Pattern Review.com). The needles you displayed are the same that I use in my Baby Lock serger and you probably use in your Imagine. SCHMETZ carries them. Organ makes them too. I buy needles in bulk from Allstitch.net. The cover stitch book you bought by Johanna Lu is awesome. I bought it too. I just had the best live TH-cam Vlog with her yesterday along with 11 other people from around the world. She was also on That Sewing Blab last week if you have a chance to check that out. Here’s something I JUST figured out, don’t laugh - seriously, I should have known this... The reason that you want a cover stitch machine over a twin needle is because of the chain looper. It is the reason that the stitches are stretchy! Professional jeans makers swear by the chain stitch as well I’ve just learned. I just love to buy sewing machines and thought that they were cool but I really didn’t know why the serger/overlocker and cover stitch machines were good for sewing knits. I just thought that it was only the feed dogs that tamed stretch fabrics and the looper was just the way these machines functioned with the feed dogs. OK, you can laugh now... You probably knew this straight away. I bought my first serger in 1991 (as I remember) and my first cover stitch machine around 2005. Cute top Rachel...

      Thanks Loriann, yes I watched Johanna's live stream back, she is utterly so amazing and I love her channel, I have picked up so many tips from her, I have to admit that I have been using normal sewing needles in my babylock how bad am I???? I never knew they needed to be different!!, I will be getting some more now to change those up xx

    • @loriannpayne4483
      @loriannpayne4483 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tee hee, I knew that you had to use special needles for some machines but I didn't know that they were actually longer! And I learned a new trick on Johanna's channel too. I've been serging since 1991 and I still learn new tricks. That's the fun part about our hobby. Now then, back to recutting out a collar/lining on the Casey Sweater top. I cut the lining out backwards and put a buttonhole in it. No saving it now. Phooey!

    Rachel, sorry you aren't feeling well, hope you recover soon. When I moved my serger (over lock, cover stitch) machine was broken so I'm looking for another, they save so much time with construction but have never been easy to thread. Please let us know how enjoy your machine. I sincerely appreciate your time posting this video. Judy

Is there anything else (apart from the light) that you don't like about the machine now that you've used it a while? Were you looking at any other models - I'm also looking at the Janome Coverpro 2000. Oh one last question - does the coverstitch also replace an overlocker?

    Not uncommon for them to require a different needle. It would be a "common" needle available where you buy your sewing needles I would imagine. My Babylock can use standard needles but it came with a little box of 5 and they are HAX1SP. There are also EL XXX (I don't know the number at the moment). Enjoy your new Coverstitch!

    Congratulations on the CS! I have a Janome CPX1000. My hubby bought it for me one year and I did not bother exchanging it for the 2000, but I totally should have. Definitely do as the manual says with the needles. But additionally I have learned through a FB group (for the CPX), that there are differences in the European vs US manuals that do not explain the difference in needles for cottons vs knits. Thus far I’ve learned that for knits you need the “SUK” type, or ball point but equivalent in the type of needle your machine calls for. So for example, mine came with ELx705, which for the longest I used on knits because that’s what came with my machine (even had two extra packets). But then I learned about the SUK and tracked down some on Amazon (local shops don’t carry them), and I have noticed an improvement! I also switched the looper thread to wooly and that has helped some too. Overall the Janome has been fidley but it has taken my knit makes to a whole new level. Yay for you!! Love your channel 👍🏼❤️

    So, unlike a serger, this finishes the hems/seams without cutting...underside looks like flat lock serger seam and topside has twin rows for topstitch? This would be used for only those things? I have a new sewing machine and super old serger....I was confused by the term coverstitch. Is that right?

    • @StitchedUp
      @StitchedUp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes more or less, it is designed to give the finish you see on hems of jerseys

    I use SUK needles (I like schmetz and organ, but my coverstitch is not fussy), the ones you have are extra long. There's a great coverstitch discussion group on facebook, if you join it you'll find all the info on needles and a lot of practical advice. I also like Johanna (and Gail Yellen on youtube- she uses babylock, but you can adapt many techniques for any machine) x

    Hello,
    I just thought to write to you spontaniously. I like your videos very much, to the contrary of my husband, the "chatty ones" even more. A month ago I had the orportunity to by a "used" Bernette Coverstitch Machine from one of the Sewing Machine Dealers called "Naehpark Diermeyer" which is located around one hour per car, away from my hometown. They are located in Bavaria. I live in Hesse. I saved around 110 Euros (around 100 Pounds). Somebody else didn't like the brandnew machine and did send it back. Lucky for me! I like to thank you for your video about the Bernette. I watched the video and knew then how to thread it (especially the lower looper). Better than the written description !!!
    Yesterday as I watched your latest video (chatty), I saw that your have the Pfaff Creative 4.5 as a Sewing Machine. I'm thinking about buying this machine to replace my 32 year old Pfaff Creative 1475 CD (the first one with a Computer inside). Back then state of the art, but now very dated but still working well. I did not find anything in your list that you talked about the 4..5. Can you tell me, if you did anywhere, so I can watch it. Or will you talk about the machine in the future? Are you satisfied with the 4.5. How is the Sewing? Did you try the Embroidery Function? I would be very thankful for any reply to my questions.
    Kindly forgive any mistakes I made with grammar and spelling. English is not my first language.
    Best regards! C.

My overlocker and coverstitch are Janomes. I don't think that would make a difference but I'm curious to hear what you find out.

One remark though, did you realize that your machine is incorrectly threaded? :) The threads go straight to the eyes of the needles (we see this clearly at 35:28).The threads must go through the holes of the presser foot before going to the needles :P

  • @heleborutube

    Rachel, your link popped up when I opened TH-cam today, having spent a few hours yesterday watching Johanna's videos. To my utter surprise, your Bernette coverstitcher is *identical* to my Merrylock 3564. I was totally delighted at point 12:30 where you showed that little lever thingie that loops the looper thread back over that hook that is right at the back under the deck! Your manual is obviously much better than the one with mine, which does not mention this at all. So, for years, I have been putting glue-stick on the end of the looper thread and letting it dry in a stiff loop so I could push it under there and hope to "catch" the hook! (it does work, eventually, but you gave me and an a-haa moment there!, Thank you).
    Just a little tip about pulling out your needle threads when you are ready to cut off: raising the front of the presser foot does help a bit, but you get a better release by pressing down on the presser foot lever - it gives an extra 2-3mm of clearance and fully releases the thread tensioners.
    About the EL X needles - they are a bit longer than the standard needle (only about 1 mm longer). The Singer 2022 series is recommended but I have also used Organ ELX 705, very good needles and good value, 10 in a packet. One thing you're going to find out is that replacing the needles will solve about 90% of any problems you have with jams. It's worth having a good supply on hand.
    And yeah, I totally agree about the crazy operation of the presser foot, when down means up and up means down. You need a whole new set of muscle memory to do that without thinking.

    I also finish off the seams the same as you by pulling the threads forward and go over the first few stitches. The last threads that get pulled to the back I do knot them now though as after a few washes of my garments I've found the cover stitching coming undone. Just something to consider. You look like you're liking it so far. Glad you are feeling a bit better. There's not much that stops you sewing lol

    I cannot get the threads to pull through to the back. I have to be very careful, thread them onto a needle and then sew the threads in

    That's so much more complicated to thread than my Janome.
