  • Steve Coogan is the UK's most recognisable comedian, be it The Day Today and Alan Partridge or The Trip with Rob Brydon.
Coogan's latest role in GREED sees him play Sir Richard McCreadie, a billionaire rich off a fast fashion empire with obvious parallels to Sir Philip Green.
He spoke to Oli Dugmore about the retail industry's colossal impact on the environment and women, the BBC and its license fee and the future of Alan Partridge,
GREED will be released in cinemas across the UK & Ireland on Friday, 21st February 2020.

What an intelligent & interesting interview. The cheap fashion thing is so true. Primark stuff falls apart quickly. If you find a charity shop in a wealthy area you get really good quality stuff that sometimes hasn't even been worn. I've got Jasper Conran & other designer stuff for under £10.

My Primark handbag lasted 15 years. I have some Primark T-shirts that are still going strong after nine years despite frequent wearing. I don’t buy from them now, but the idea that it’s all rubbish isn’t true.

@@brendangribben8615 does Steve have a big luxury car collection? Either way after watching a documentary on billionaires who make tens of millions every month in interest whilst there are people who can't afford food / housing people who don't even have WATER in some places I think the world is pretty messed up. I hope that if I ever started to earn millions (which is v unlikely lol) id want to pay higher taxes to help other people out. Insane how in a lot of places very rich people get away with paying very little in tax. By storing their money in Switzerland apparently multi billionaires pay a 0.4% ..or maybe it was a 0.04% tax rate

It seems to me that one way to tame fast fashion is to stress the environmental benefits of recycling clothing. When I shop for clothes (including shoes), I first visit the local thrift stores. In this part of the States, that means the Salvation Army, Goodwill, ARC, and the Veterans' of Foreign Wars Thrift stores. Their prices are much more reasonable, so you can very often find terrific buys - including on famous brands. Buying there is far better for your budget and the environment. Plus which, of course, you are not directly subsidizing sweat labour or the legal equivalents. You can also buy used clothing online for very reasonable prices. You can order used books online, as well, which means fewer trees being cut down for your enjoyment and much better prices.

Steve brought up some important issues but one thing he wasn't entirely correct about: transgender people having money. Yes, there are trans people that are employed etc. but trans people are also facing the same issues a lot of gay people did a few decades ago: homelessness, family members cutting ties with them, having difficulty getting a job, and if they have trouble transitioning, depression is something that'll make it harder to find or keep a job or stay alive even. Also, transitioning is expensive if you go private (which some people do because the queues in public healthcare are too long for them to wait..).
