  • This doesn't need to be such a contentious issue. Just do both.

I agree with the reasons you provide for intermissions. The one that's relevant to me most often is going to concession.

This video reminded me of seeing a production of Into the Woods with friends in college. One of our friends had been in the "Junior" version of the show in middle school which apparently doesn't include the second act. Intermission came and she was all ready to go meet with our friend who was in the cast and then leave until one of our other friends informed her that there was still a second half to go. For anyone unfamiliar with Into the Woods and how wildly different the tone is between acts 1 and 2... pretty sure a part of my friend's childhood died that day.

I remember watching Hateful 8 in theaters and it had a planned intermission. I really appreciated it and it was done well both for the viewing experience and the creative use of it.

A small cinema near where I grew up used to be a theatre, and they keep the intermissions from back then - even in films that aren't made for it, all films have an intermission where everyone goes to the loo, gets some snacks, stretches their legs, and listened to a guy who comes out of the stage and plays the piano. Feels very old school, but is a beloved part of going to that cinema that ruins going to Cineworld or Odeon for you 😂

My favorite thing about seeing Tool live, besides Tool obviously, is that they have a 10 min or so intermission with a countdown each show

I grew up (and still live) in Europe and up until a few years ago we had intermissions, in all US movies too. Yes, sometimes the transition might've been a bit jarring if there really was no good spot to cut but usually theatres were really good at choosing the intermission point.

Intermissions used to be the standard for longer movies. Ten Commandments, Lawrence of Arabia, West Side Story, all had intermissions. Gone With the Wind and Sound of Music, two of the most successful movies ever made, included a planned act break.

I feel like the episode segmentation on some streaming shows, the "we made a 6-hour movie" kind, have already had directorial crews test out where to put intermissions, so they could probably carry that over to theatres.

i know its a problematic movie now but Gone with the Wind is a notorious 4hr movie one of the first mainstream ones i think and it has an intermission and i always thought it would be a good idea. Also from an editing perspective if TV shows have been edited for commercial breaks for years movies can edit for one intermission. Also so many movie theaters now have the more 'real food' options they bring to you in the theater etc and I feel like an intermission would help with that.

As an Indian, I find it bizarre that u guys don't have intermission... It is something that benefits all parties. I buy more popcorn during intermission.

I COULD NOT AGREE MORE!!!! you took ALL the thoughts right out of my mouth🙌🙌🙌

  • @jeffmartin5419

I thoroughly agree with all of your points, especially the last one.

  • @kerryfaler7989

Super agree as a 40+ woman. Have an intermission, concessions, merch for films, photo backdrops, bathroom. I'm all for it.

  • @Genemon123

I prefer no intermisson but I do think giving people the option wouldn't be a bad idea

  • @AtomicNofy

I was hesitant at first but the more I listened the more I agreed. I didn’t see Oppenheimer because I didn’t want to have to deal with sitting in the theatre for 3 hours and stressing over when I wa a probably going to need to use the bathroom

Thank you Nando! This has always bugged me. Also, for the love of god, make the rows wide enough so I can pass people without interrupting everyone thanks

  • @Miksho7

When The Hateful Eight was in theaters, I saw a special advance "Roadshow Screening" where it had an intermission with a title card and everything. And it was great!

  • @CRKerekanich

I do love musicals, and I appreciate this feature about them. I’m on board with it.

When I saw The Batman, which was pretty close to 3 hours long, I had to get up to go to the bathroom during the movie and completely missed the scene between Batman and the Riddler in Arkham. I was debating on whether or not I should get up and go because I felt like the movie was close to the end and I could hold it but my bladder kept telling me that wasn't possible. Not only did I miss out on part of the movie because I was in the bathroom but I also wasn't paying that much to the film while I was watching it before I left because I was having an inner battle with myself over leaving or not. I definitely would've benefited from an intermission with that movie.

There are theaters in NYC where you can order food from your seat, but intermission would be great for the bathroom
