  • A collection video. Showing every Maxis game released in America! From Raid on Bungeling Bay to The Sims, this covers it all and it's all from my personal collection. Boxes, overviews, history, trivia, random Maxis love. Part one of three.
Thanks to alanw3000 for the intro!

"It can be a boring game, but at the same time its very cool when you figure it out."
You... Just described the entirety of the "sim" games.

This has to be one of the best Sim-related videos in whole TH-cam!
Also, if you didn't know, Maxis stands for "Six AM". Will Wright said it in an interview ^^.

This was all from a collection perspective, so I really just wanted to show the boxes and such. I hope to do a more involved video someday showing the actual gameplay.

RoboSport was a phenomenal game when it came out, especially for two players. One player set up his robots while the other left the room, then the other would set up his robots and start the round. It is one of the few nostalgia games that I think about replaying again, even after all these years.
It was on Macintosh at one point, as that's how I played it.

@miniv7 It came from "The Need For Speed SE" game for MS-DOS/Windows 95. There was a driver named "Phreak". The "-indee" just evolved from that over the years.

I never said they don't exist anymore, I said they're dead as far as I'm concerned. I went on to explain that since they're headed by an entirely different team and Will Wright is no longer with them, they're essentially not the same company at all anymore to me. Yes, they're still around and yes there is a new SimCity coming out, but with very, very little reminiscent of the Maxis I grew up with.

Holy crap. I just discovered your videos yesterday and am watching them at work which mean I have to pause every now and then to go take care of something. A great version BTW not just a cheap port.

Spent hours playing the Speccy version back in the day. It takes a while to load if I remember correctly, but I think you can save your game (on cassette of course!) which was cool. I think it also came with a huge manual about city building/planning theory or something :).

  • @LGR
    @LGR  13 ปีที่แล้ว

@TheStylistGuru It's pretty straightforward once you figure out how data is written to magnetic media. A cassette tape is really just a long string of microscopic magnets. Computer data is binary (0's and 1's) so that's a perfect match for magnets (North and South). Orienting those into a pattern will store data, and that data can be read by a computer as files and programs. So long as you don't get another magnet or something to screw with that magnetic orientation, tapes will hold data!

  • @CapnKetchup

Interesting factoid on SimFarm... the graphics data files were readily accessible after installation. Fans would post "other" crops on BBS's, including marijuana crops.

Robo Sport was a turn-based game played over a modem or on a shared PC ("leave the room while I do my turns").
The play field was a small obstacle course, with your 4 robots on one side and opponents 4 on the other side.
It worked kinda like Battleship: Four phases per turn. You would program your robot to move, look, duck or shoot at each phase. Your opponent would do the same. Then the PC would parse the 4 phases and produce the results. Each would view results and strategize their next moves.

I was a huge Maxis fan. I have the original Simcity (With Godzilla) and the very first version. The copy protection would come up everytime you started a new city. Later revisions only had it come up when you first loaded the game. I also have the original Terrain Editor the one you had to order from Maxis. There is no retail packaging it was just a couple of 5.25 disks. Which did come before the cities add on packs. I can also tell you SimFarm came out before SimCity classic. I worked for Electronics Boutique (Now GameStop) at the time and I remember when it came in. I realize this video is as of this post 11 years old so you may have already known this but incase you didn't :-)

I had a copy of Robosport on the Amiga, although I never knew how to play it. I understood that you were supposed to program your robots and then send them out to battle the enemy robots, I just didn't know exactly how to do that.
I was always intrigued by the idea, while every other Amiga owner I know thought that it was crap.

  • @joenook

I noticed somewhere in your videos that you have a read/write device allowing you to write diskette images from modern computer to a 5.25 8 bit diskettes. Can you tell me how its called, or even better, where to order it from. I have Pravetz 8 (8-bit Bulgarian version of Apple IIE) It was originally manufactured in mid '80, then the 16-bits version came around early 90's.

@alozzzy1213 Ah yes, I think you're right in that regard though! I think I also read an inspiration for The Sims 1 (originally "Dollhouse") was to re-create his house that burned in 1991.

@Lacey1D Not really, believe it or not. Most of these cost maybe a dollar or three each. It's rare that I pay more for my vintage games. I know people that spend more a year on coffee! So grabbing a game here and there over the years for what is essentially disposable cash, it's added up!

Fun fact -- my mum liked Sim City when she played it at a friend's house, so she asked me whether I could get hold of a copy for our Amiga. Being a broke teenager, I enlisted my own friend's brother to, erm, circumvent the copy protection. I got the disk, told my mum it was loading, and was horrified when on the disk was some badly digitized 16-bit porn. Luckily my mum didn't see it and I didn't get grounded and the computer taken away like what had happened a year earlier after another poor decision on my part regarding computer usage.
I swear to God I've never pirated a game since. No sir.

However, the "Six AM" story is a myth. It started around 1999 with SimCity 3000, where if you typed 'Maxis' the news ticker at the bottom of the screen stated "Did you know Maxis spelled backwards is Six AM?" It then got attributed to Wright, Jeff Braun, and others, but it was simply one of many fake news items in SC3k.
Maxis was the result of brain-storming with family of Jeff Braun. The idea was "computer game companies should have two-syllable names & should include an X"

Robosport is awesome! Turn based. What will each of my robots do for the set amount of time each turn takes? You program each robot to move, or look, or aim. CTF, death-match, etc. Up to four players or CPU any way you want. You set how many robots and types and arena and turn lengths, game type... After all players have programmed all robots for the turn, action is calculated and the played back to each player separately so that fog of war is maintained...
