    (Heres what I think of the modern gaming companys)
    EA: He was usually a nice guy, and had lots of close friends. But at some point, he went power crazy and greedy and began killing off his close friends, so he could get more money.
    Nintendo: The cheery, older, and more up-going brother of SEGA. He knows that the old ways are the best ways, but just likes making old look new. Every now and then he tries something new, but usually just makes the same things. He loves platformers, and doesn't mind what people think of his consoles.
    SEGA: The younger, and more desperate, but tries to hide it, of the brothers. He started out small, but quickly went head to head with his older brother. But somewhere along the way, he got too cocky and made some terrible mistakes in the 3D times. Now he tries to compete by working off his older brothers consoles.
    Sony: Sony actually used to really like movies photography before video games. Sony did try and work with Nintendo on making games, but Nintendo quickly shut it down. Luckily, after fixing up on it, Sony started making games and consoles of his own. Eventually he got into a rivilary with his frenemy, Microsoft.
    Microsoft: Microsoft is probally the richest of all them, and sometimes pulls an EA. (Shutting down a company for profit) Microsoft is an all around guy, and likes technology in general. His frenemy, Sony, always tries competeing with him, in one way or another.
    Maxis: Maxis was fun and interesting guy, he really liked simluating things. Every now and then he wanted to make something new, but usually made really good simulations. He eventually got very run down, and EA got a hold of him. After a good 10-15 years of good then EA forced DRM, DLC flooded games, EA poisoned him, and Maxis slowly died.
    Rareware: Just like Maxis he wasn't a big competeter, and usually just made games for the big guys. Rareware, or as his friends call him "RW", made alot of nice and freindly games. He also got a little silly and made some AO Rated games. But alot of people remember him for his great selection. Just like Maxis EA posioned Rareware, killing off more fond memories.
    Valve: Everyone loves him, he has what everyone has, but also massive sales. Valve towers over everyone else, but everyone denys him of being the best. Valves freinds and fans called him, "The Master Race" again the other companies deny that.
    ScottGames: ScottGames is the littlest of them all, but has alot of hate and love towards him. ScottGames used to be very relgious, but then begain a series that soon will come to a close.
    Three Rings: You've probally never heard of him, neither have the other companies. Three Rings is very poor, and desperatlly needs money. Three Rings used to flourish with online games such as, "Whirled", "Doctor who : Universes in time." and a few others. They still stick around, but unless they get the proper funding, could die.
    2k Games: 2k likes sports, alot, but also has an adimariation for simulation like Maxis. But instead of LikeSims 2k likes whole Civilization Sims, 2k still is around and is a huge fan favorite of sports and history lovers!
    (I might add more if I feel like it, but what do you think of it?)

    I wish you included some gameplay of "Raid on Bungeling Bay" sadly, it was the only game in this video series that I was familiar with. I spent hundreds of hours slump over my C 64 playing it. One of my favorite games of that time. Thanks for posting this very informative set of videos.

    @cjcapta SimRefinery was never sold or released. It was only given to select Chevron employees (in prototype form, from what I gather) and so far I've never seen a copy of the game surface. I have only ever seen a grainy picture of the title screen, which sports a logo that looks *very* similar to the one used in the SNES version of SimCity. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it were a mod of the SNES game.

    As I mentioned at the start, this is a PC and computer game collection - since all Maxis games were developed for them originally. I have all the console games too, but I didn't show them here as that isn't the focus of my collection.

  • @LGR
    @LGR  11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It's a company called Maxis, but it's not "Maxis" as was talked about here. Maxis died when Will Wright left if you ask me.

  • @The90sGamingGuy

    Good job on these three videos.A very interesting look at the Maxis games and company. I really didn't know much about them even though i played The Sims shortly after they were released. God that seems like so long ago now to me. The Sims and older Sim City are true gems of game series. They are games every gamer should at least try once. Could you do a video like this on ID Software? I would like to know more about this game company. Keep up the good work!

  • @LGR
    @LGR  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @inkyatari Indeed. I'm now on the lookout for that one, a friend of mine made me aware of it shortly after I posted this video. The collection is never complete, haha.

  • @LGR
    @LGR  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @WalrusRockGod Check out the video title. This is only meant to cover the Maxis games until 2000, or right around when EA took over the "Sim" games and started doing crazy things with the name (they completely took over the company in 1997-98). There are games after that by "Maxis" but that's pretty much just EA doing its thing. I own those as well, but don't consider them part of my "Maxis collection".

  • @LGR
    @LGR  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @G9King I can assure you they are not getting smashed or tossed around more than they can handle with ease. They're darned sturdy things, those old game boxes.

  • @LGR

    Yup, outside the US/Oceania the Unlimited Edition was known by other names, sometimes the country it was sold in: UK Edition, Deutschland Edition, World Edition, etc.

  • @ocass66

    There was a little easter egg in the SimCity 3000 Unlimited CD Autorun menu where if you click the Maxis logo it shows a picture of Will Wright as a sim and he is holding SimCity skyscrapers.

  • @LGR
    @LGR  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @13GTC You know that out of those you listed, only SimCity 2000 was before EA bought them outright... EA arguably actually saved the company.

  • @LGR
    @LGR  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Kinda meant, without patching it and doing some major tweaks. At least, I've never been able to get it working just out of the box, I always have to struggle with all sorts of compatibility issues before getting it to work. It will work, but it's never been perfect.

  • @LGR
    @LGR  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It would be a dream come true to see someone like Mr. Saito do something with the GlassBox engine. As far as I know he's currently doing a new Seaman game for the 3DS, but I still hope to see more original things from him. Spore 2 could also be fantastic with GlassBox... so many possible things to simulate with its agents system.

    Wright only ever designed the first SimCity. He co-designed SC2k with Fred Haslam, but SC3k and SC4 were by other people with little (if any) input from Wright. He was working on The Sims during SC3k's development, and Spore during SC4's.

    Thank you for this amazing overview of the history of Maxis! My first computer game was Sim Tower when I was very young. Have played Sim games ever since. Sim City 3000 unlimited is practically my childhood and favorite sim city game. As for your installation problems regarding Unlimited it works fine on all my computers, even windows 7 :\ unfortunately I can't get SC 2000 working on my computer now, but I have an XP laptop for that. :) Thanks again!

    I got for 99 cents at the thrift store "Sim Mania", which is a 2001 compilation of Sim City Classic, Sim Tower, Sim Isle, Sim Safari, Streets of Sim City, and Sim Copter. The box says "Windows 95 & 98", but it also includes DOS, Windows 3.1, and Mac versions of some of the games. I guess this was EA's attempt to squeeze some more money out of these legacy Maxis games one more time.

  • @LGR

    The last SimCity Will Wright worked on to any real extent was SimCity 2000. SC3k and 4 were both done by different teams at Maxis/EA, and of course Societies was another company altogether. Wright was heading up and working on Spore when SC4 was being developed.

  • @LGR
    @LGR  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hehe, true that. Freaking 98.
    The game just plain won't start, it gives several errors relating to a missing library and some kind of memory thing. Need to apply fixes for the resolution, color depth, and the executable itself to get past the startup errors. It eventually works, but still has some speed and consistency issues. This is with my last three machines (XP, Vista, 7).

    @Expack3 I still have some of those ads! At least, in digital form. I actually printed several of the screenshots and hung them on my wall, I was so psyched for the 3D SimCity 3000. It looked a lot like the engine used with SimCopter and Streets. Then they completely changed it when EA got there and it was only for the better. I imagine the 3D SimCity would have been a disaster, and not the fun kind like you get in the game!

    @Expack3 I've talked to people that played it, both beta-testing and some who saw it in the gaming industry. All I've heard is a unanimous "holy crap, it was horrible, what were they thinking?" from all of them. Considering they said this was far worse than Crystal Skull and even Streets in comparison, I'm inclined to think it would have been terrible and it had nothing to do with the 3D engine! Mainly due to the complicated UI & convoluted design it sounds like. Just too much clutter to be fun.

    SimCity 2000. This is possibly my favorite game EVER. It really is perfection: not too difficult, but not so easy that you can breeze through it. And the game throws twists at you, such as disasters and rewards, to keep you on your feet.
