  • We were able to get our hands on the new Canon C200 thanks to our friends at Lens Pro To Go. We had it for a few days and took the time to do some tests and put this thing to work.

    Sweet camera... Also, I almost dropped my drink when you used the wansui song, I've been working on a video for weeks to that song. Love it, and Artlist.io is bad ass... Needs more songs, but its a good service.

    There's something about the Canon image that I just really like. Good review; love how you always film people in interior and exterior environments. Too many camera reviews just show close-ups of flowers and slow-mo shots of nature. I feel a lot of these cameras are suitable for indie narrative work and I'm really considering the C200 for an indie feature. Also, love that Space Jam shirt.

    I'm so very glad that you're outputing stuff like 6:46 so your channel can visually compete with dudes like Peter McKinnon and look like it was filmed in 2017. I think you're one of the most talented people on TH-cam and I'm glad to see the presentation start to slowly get out of that 2005 era vibe.

    I'm not arguing specs. If you want to argue specs, go to another comment. I have always felt that the canon cameras, since the 5d mark ii and the original 7d, have consistently had very cinematic images, even down to the canon t3i and t2i. The shutter feels very much like film, the colors match well with cinema cameras and film, even the noise is very reminiscent of film grain. Even the low light is good if you don't outright starve the sensor, something a lot of people tend to do with cameras that are "bad in low light".
    The camera seems great, to me, and looks incredibly cinematic. My t3i that I received in 2011 is still serving me extremely well to this day and is still great all around, so I think it's safe to assume this camera will do the same. I think the c200 is a fine camera, and if you disagree, then cool, I can respect that. Everybody has a preference, and I prefer canon cameras.

    The target demographic of this camera is someone specific, but as someone who does a lot of wedding, product, and mini-docs, this camera is a dream. Though I've only had it for 2 weeks, I've used it on a variety of shoots and can say I'm really happy with it so far. As everyone has stated, the lack of a middle codec/10-bit option between mp4 and raw is a glaring omission, but the mp4 holds-up surprisingly well in grading (with care) and the raw is rock-solid. If you do broadcast it's an obvious no-go barring a release next spring of an internal 10-bit, but one-man bands who do a lot of online delivery should absolutely look into this. The dual-pixel AF in combo with the touchscreen and tracking is amazing for certain situations. I owned an Ursa Mini and UMP prior to the c200 and though I loved those cameras, I'm glad I made the switch. Canon color science has always been a big bonus, especially with proper grading, and my experience so far with the c200 is no different.

    I don't think it needs prores as much as a good middle codec. If Canon wanted to cannibalize the C300 MKii, they could probably release a firmware update enabling the same 422 10-bit format found in that camera in the C200. This would be such a powerhouse of a camera if they did end up doing that, although I wouldn't be surprised if they don't end up doing that or wait for a while to do it, and you can be sure it'll be a substantial fee to unlock it.

    • @RyanAnthonyDigitalMedia
      @RyanAnthonyDigitalMedia 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Caleb Owen They'll never do that, or risk losing a shit ton of money on their C300 line. Canon already painted themselves in a corner with their C series cams, so now they have to restrict features to keep things profitable.

    • @Calebowenfilms
      @Calebowenfilms 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, one can dream though. I just wonder if Sony and Panasonic might force them into a position that they might consider it to claim more market share. The EVA-1 will have a more manageable codec with 422 and 10-bit, although I'm not 100% sure how that will work out in post since the camera isn't even out yet. The FS7/FS7mkii are both quality cameras in a similar range and have a similar codec. If those cameras are beating out the C300mkii and they're making nothing from that line, it could potentially make sense for them to shut down the C300 line entirely and focus on the C200, with maybe a different camera rounding out their lower end instead of the C100.
      In reality, you are more likely correct but I think it is interesting to speculate on what could happen. Things keeping changing pretty quickly, I'm wondering if the dust will settle anytime soon (probably not lol).

  • @CamekoSam
    @CamekoSam 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know why but I got the feeling that most of the C200 shots here were just slightly out of focus. You present some C200 footage and it's soft, then you go back to your studio image and it's sharp. Over and over again.

    The crop slow mo on the C300 MK II is still better quality than the full frame slow mo on the C200. You didn't mention the XF-AVC codec though coming in 2018 for this cam. No one really knows if it will be 422/420 10 bit or 8 bit. If this cam gets 422 10 bit then Canon should give us this MP4 codec, including 4k 60p, in the C300 MK II. Fun vid...

      New C200 owner here. The slo mo is very different at 60 fps and 120 fps. 60 fps is extremely solid and to my eye identical to 24p. 120 is softer.

    I would buy this camera in a heartbeat if it filmed Prores, it would be a dream camera come true for this price. However, 150mbps mp4 ain't gonna cut it, and I don't have the space or time to work in RAW. Sticking with my Ursa Mini

      +Cinematic Crew Studios .......I suppose it's a trade off than. bm gives you 4k proress internally but worse lowlight (and even with the ursa mini pro some ir polution). c200 gives better lowlight, less ir pollution but no 4k 10 bit option (unless you shoot raw and convert to 10bit later). I currently own the bmpcc and a7sii. The majority of the time I find the a7sii footage holds up just fine, the rare occasion that it doesn't I just skip right over proress and go to RAW on my bmpcc. I don't see the majority of television stations wanting anything more than 1080p 10bit footage. honestly though both bm 4.6k and c200 are great. just comes down to someones needs (competition is always a good thing)

    After a few test shoots i have fallen in love with this camera. I love the size, the ergonomics, the auto focus and the image quality, but only the RAW footage. The 8 bit footage is the worse that I've ever seen. The lighting has to be "ideal" to get clean images. Tons of artifacts if you look closely. Just look at hair on the shadow side.People say that the 8 bit is pretty good. I disagree. I wouldn't use it on a paid gig. Besides that BS codec, there is a lot to like about the C200. Now I need to spend what the camera cost me in Cfast 2.0 cards. One more thing; In RAW developed to canon log2, The Arri Alexa Clog to Rec709 is the best LUT for a good starting point. Much better than what Canon offers in my opinion.

    One interesting thing is the canon xc10 and xc15 shoot at a whopping 305mbs bitrate and 4:2:2 color space. I think it's underrated. It's and awesome little travel cam. Surprised the internal on the c200 didn't at least match

    • @bookofficialchu6237
      @bookofficialchu6237 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soc Seamon it's mainly because of two things:
      the sensor of the XC cameras is significantly smaller.
      The fact that they don't have interchangeable lenses makes it so they don't fall in the same line as the eos cinema cameras. C200 has to stay in line with canon's philosophy. Which means it is better than the C100, but should in no way surpass the C300 mark ii.
      They do this a lot... Sadly

    • @AlanJMash

      Agreed Soc, I have an XC10 and if the 4k were 10 bit 422 would be killer, it is 8 bit. I talked to Brent Ramsey of Canon at NAB this year and he actually thought the 4k in the XC10/15 was 10 bit and HD 8 bit. I had to show him online that it wasn't and all of it was 8 bit. C200 should at least match it. The coming codec probably will.

    Thanks for the review. Did you use a prime lens for the AF test or was it a zoom lens?
    And in this case you didn't use face detection AF but just the normal continuous autofocus, right?

      ghostpictures that depends on the work you do. For run and gun situations the c200 is a far better camera. But for broadcast and studio work the BUMP is a better camera. Again like any other camera there's not any in this price range thats "better" than another as many people online would make you believe its all about preference and needs

    Nice review of the camera. Functionally, it seems to tick boxes. Prores would be a great addition if we scream at Canon for a few months. Personally, not a fan of the color space and image from the camera in daylight scenes. However, the intentionally lit studio environment did look appealing showcasing a better dynamic range. Interested to see future shorts on this camera with lighting plans etc rather than available light.
    50D filmstock for outside available light/controlled light is still the winner in my box. (Wink Wink nudge nudge)

    I don't understand why you would still buy the more expensive C300MkII when you have the C200 which has RAW, better SlowMotion and everything you need... The only upside I can find with the C300MkII is the better midway recording format.

    Hey Ryan, I keep coming back to this camera again and again. Currently have a C100 mk2, so this isn't an insignificant additional pile of cash to throw at a system. Does the AF work in 120fps? I'm guessing dual pixel won't.

    Great video, thanks a lot! I am in the process of buying a C200 myself and have a really stupid and noob question but.. i will ask anyway simply because I dont know about it or how this camera works. When shooting RAW, are any video profiles or LOG modes selectable or can/need to be applied (like when shooting MP4), or because its RAW, basically is just RAW straight out of the sensor with no procession and end of story? Thanks again :)

    Thanks for review. I wonder hot the IQ compares to C100 (II)? I had finger on my wallet to buy couple of C100ii's this spring. Though C100 have really great image up to ISO 20.000 I stayed ony my ancient XHA1s's. Imagine that! Few major dealbrakers with C100ii:
    Though image have incredible sensitivity, in real life with 18-135 lenses only brought 2 f-stops of advantage (at most) in low light and 1 f-stops in dynamic range over XHA1. While camera can record up to 20.000 ISO, it was notoriously bad if underexposed. While I can underexpose XHA1 at least 3 fostops before image gets hard to recover, C100 degrades image at only 1 f-stop already (blockiness, moire, false colors). So not for my run and gun and expose later style of shooting. You need to nail the exposure on C100ii in camera. Shooting in LOG is really hard to predict it in run and gun situations.
    AF works only in center (but with lock button it can be lived with). But I cant understand that tracking focus worked ONLY with worst lenses Canon had to offer. Only slower zooms had that option. No expensive fine and fast glass support it. I wanted motor-zoom; again only available for the cheapest lenses. And chepest lenss are just that: Cheap. Hard to focus and zoom... so basicly a wierd DSLR... I can use my DSLR better with smooth vintage lenses shooting video.
    And final: ISO is in STEPS. NO way to smoothly change exposure as I can do in my camcorder. Sony have stepless ND filter now... that solves this issue. Third problem: IMAGE out of C100ii is not miles better than 1440 properly deinterlaced (with scripts) and noise reduced, of XHA1. Add the proper form factor, more convenient manual controls, and WAY better balanced in hand. Despite XHA1 is 3x the weight than C100 I had more wrist acke from C100. I tested both cameras in various low light and real life conditions. XHA1 is 1 f-stop behind if I pull XHA1 the image to the max. In normal daylight conditions not that much of a difference. Yes better color from new Canon in low light, and image is OK straight from the camera while XHA1 must go under long process of deinterlacing (reconstructing 50p), fine tuning, denoising, etc. In the end... I will see, I said and continue to use my old cameras until now.
    And my decison was right. C200 :)
    The question is if this camera solves my issues: Does hold underexposure better than C100, id ND is continuous-stepless, if AF tracking now works with any lens that have AF?
    Thanks.

      This is something I've had to say in various conversations about filming. We at COLBY Films, for our first 3 to 4 films (not including a 5 part series we did) were filmed with a LG phone. We edited them all on Windows Movie Maker, on a small mini ASUS laptop. Camera quality, fancy softwares, and highly praised computers are NOT what determines your film. You are.
      So, I suggest you don't do anything, and, work with what you got. Explore your passion for film-making - and have FUN doing it. We did it, and so can you.
