What I love about Mr. Sheffield is that he's not afraid to show us his clunkers. So many plant channels just show you their wonderful specimens, big and perfect. I often suspect they've run out to the plant store, dropped some bucks and are now telling you exactly the same info you'd get from a plant resource guide. This guy is for real. He doesn't have a sunroom or a greenhouse, sometimes he screws up with a plant, and his advice is practical and useful. Living in an apartment, the mess of repotting was a real challenge. I saw him using a large plastic tray/tub for this and my dim light bulb lit up. So simple and easy and now repotting and the cleanup are easy-peasy. And use a bloody moisture meter! Watering isn't a mystery with one and they're not expensive. And why not buy it from him as a way to say 'thanks'?

@@SheffieldMadePlants You've helped me save more than one plant, and even inspired me to give a calathea a try. So far, so good on that one. I've had plant collections a few times in the past, changing life situations meant that I lost custody of them, but now I'm housing-stable and while my apartment is more or less a cave. grow lights and choosing the right plant for a given location means I've got a bit of nature around me. Wish I could get to my Ikea, but it's not conveniently located. In the olden days there seemed like lots of retailers carried houseplants, but now it's pretty limited in my area to the big box home stores and the occasional good deal at a big supermarket. Again, thanks for your work. And no, I won't be purchasing a $500 plant any time soon.

@@SheffieldMadePlants I don't know yet. I found damage on five plants, but only thrips on one. I can't see very well, so I've ordered a loupe to be able to inspect the rest of my plants. I tried with my phone, but it was hard to get the camera to focus. If I need to treat all my plants, I'll treat all my plants. I'm not panicking. For once, I think my habit of repotting new plants directly might have saved my plants.

@@pinstripesuitandheels I got thrips into my collection once too... and by now I have accepted to just live with them :/ Tried diatomite, tried sticky yellow and blue traps, giving them a good shower... they somehow always come back. Now I have to inspect my plants every time I water them and just kill any thrips I see one by one 😮‍💨I send heavily infected plants to bathroom isolation. It works for now, it's just rather time consuming. I hope I can get rid of more once it gets warmer outside by placing them outside and hopefully having something natural getting rid of them pests.

    • @pinstripesuitandheels
      @pinstripesuitandheels 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@sachikoda yeah, it's just a fact of life, isn't it. With plants come pests. Managing is the best you can do. I treated all my plants with neem oil yesterday, but some of them really didn't like that. I sprayed them all down with the shower head today, and pruned the leaves that were damaged. I've ordered some organic soap and tea tree oil to make a soapy spray and will spray my entire collection weekly for two more weeks. The neem oil will now only be used as a preventative on my Monstera Deliciosa.

If you is use a wet ear bud/q-tip and roll it against the cataphyll you can gently lift it up, and to get under the leaf and gently push it of the cataphyll. I have to do it for my white and pink Princess. If it doesn't unfurl, wrap in a warm, damp cloth apparently helps but i haven't tried that myself.

Spider mite: I first used Diatomaceous earth in my chicken coop to reduce the chance of spider mites investing my chucks. When I had fungus gnats I sprinkled some on the soil of my plants, as well as watering from the bottom. Diatomaceous earth works by being abrasive and scratching the insect exoskeleton causing dehydration. Being mostly silica, quartz, it is safe for the plants.

I have been out today though. Just to a Costa with my youngest who had abdominal surgery 2 weeks ago. So hopefully, things are going to get better for us both. @@uzmaali9746bless u honey. I do have a philodendron narrow escape on a moss pole. The kitten was jumping on the pole n dancing on top, bizarre lil thing. I have managed to climb all the rubbish n put lemon juice on the pole (shop brought one, plastic pole with coir round it) lemon has stopped him messing with that one at least. Roll on his last vacc's mid March n he can go out. Thanks for the comment hun. Xxxx

@@lyndseywilliams3895I had sciatica that lasted 6 weeks. My son took over the plant watering for me. I'm grateful for his help, but I had quite a few plants die during those 6 weeks. I hope you are better now. Sciatica is no joke!

I just added a lavender tradescantia, a fluted jade, and a Rex geranium to my collection to brighten things up. Great tip on cleaning. My snake plant could probably use a good wipe.

okay, just the content I needed today after looking at my poor Fittonia and wondering why it looked crusty! out come the scissors tonight. thank you! Heading off to watch the Oxalis video as we bought one of these 2 years ago and planted it outside (it said it was for outside) and it died over winter, it was a proper beauty too, I was so sad!

I'm in zone 8b and that shamrock plant ☘️ grows outside in my yard. I planted mine under my lilac bush it gets dappled sun. You may have luck growing it outside, too. It dies back and grows again in the spring.

When I first moved to Virginia 3 years ago I had only brought 1 plant with me my 25 year old plumeria. Within the first week I knew I needed more. I was in the supermarket and found an angel plant and bought it. It was in a small plastic pot and 3 years later I thought it looked sad so I decided to repot it. I went up 3 sizes but was amazed because the roots had totally taken over the small pot. It took half an hour to cut the pot off. I replanted it and the next day it was standing tall and it actually looked happy! That poor plant was in misery but never gave up. It’s happy now!

unfold leaves are mostly because dry air, try to spray some water some few days.
You also could use a thin thing go into the unfold leave and take it carefully out + spray some water

Warm misting of the stuck leaf helps it unfurl after a week to ten days. Dry the leaves around it that get wet. Works for me every time 👍

3:11 try wrapping them in a dish towel or paper towel that’s been run under hot water and let that sit for a while, then repeat a few times a day and it should help within a day or two in my experience!!

Hello Mr Sheffield, I found your channel yesterday and it gave me the encouragement to cut back and spring-care my houseplants. I‘m still a novice with them, only started about 3 years ago during Covid and this winter my plants looked so bad. Your videos have given me the motivation and encouragement to gave them their much needed attention. Thank you for your lovely videos. ❤

Fun video as always. Your video of the rootbound plant and your comment about not ripping apart the roots well .... Almost 2 years ago I took a funeral peace plant from a 3 inch pot and put it into a 6 inch pot (didn't know that might have been too big then). It just keeps putting out leaves and spread into the whole diameter of the pot. Recently quite a few leaves were turning yellow so I figured I needed a repot. When I pulled out the plant I discovered I tight bunch of roots with little dirt. The roots were shaped exactly like the original pot. They never spread out at all into all that new soil. I had to ":rip apart" the roots. They were tight and awfully long in that little imaginary pot. I divided the plant into 3 plants and put 2 back in the pot I had just dumped and one in a smaller pot to share. I usually tease out some ends when I repot a rootbound plant but don't know what happened here. It was quite a surprise to see.
