Great video Richard! About your Fungus Gnats situation: Compost will indeed increase the problem of fungus gnats due to how wet it gets/stays. While our soil does not solve it, it does help in keeping their numbers down as the mixes will retain less water than compost & keep on to just enough water for the specific species (so i.e. more retention in Alocasia mix than Cacti mix).| There is also another reason SYBASoil helps (which might have been the case in your situation): Our worm castings (sometimes, not consistently) contain predatory mites which attack the Gnats. They often die during transport and we cannot really guarantee a healthy arrival right now. But something fun to consider if we do get to a point where we can consistently keep them alive in the bag. We are going to be working with Wageningen University to increase their lifespan in the bag and increase the effect next year! Sybren from Sybotanica 🌿🍃🌱
Yo the shameless self plugs is such a hilarious move, and the way you plug your links is also super smart because if it doesn't feel like an ad I'll probably want to buy whatever you're selling more. Finally about to commit to a moisture meter c;
A 1:4 of Hydrogen perox (3%) & water will do wonders... but won't kill the adults from laying new eggs, so that nifty yellow sticky trap @SheffieldMadePlants showed, along with saturating the soil (not the greens) with hydroPerox/Water solution targets larvae in the soil - shouldn't be used frequently as it can kill off the good microbes if used too often... sterilizes everything (not good for plant) - but very good periodically to oxygenate & rid the soil of fungus.
A warning for anyone outside of the UK… When he says “compost” just be aware that he’s not talking about actual compost. Brits call potting soil “compost” for some reason. I would hate for anyone to ruin their houseplants by trying to use compost!
as northern european, i have noticed all plant sellers even here calling it compost and not a plant soil. i was freaking out in the beginning before i read the label
You're really coming into a new form with your channel. Your character is shining, smiled and laughed throughout a video about plants. Botany doesnt need to be drab. Great work!
Dude! It’s like you just had Whoopi for the first time ever!! You really embraced yourself, as well as, your collection in this video! The common theme of plant care and lifestyle left me feeling empowered and inspired to help out my own little plant community in my home! Love it, you absolutely aced this video, thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your experience and your insights into the world of plants!!
I started watching your channel a few months ago looking for tips for my plants and they were really helpful but now i feel like your videos are getting so much more entertaining and funnier while containing the helpful information, I'm so here for it!
I discovered your channel a couple of months back, but I can definitely already see that your video style is evolving in the best of ways! The goofy bits bring me so much joy and I love how you explain/simplify the “why” behind the plant care tips you offer. Super duper glad I found your channel!! 🪴💛
Awesome video 😊 my husband saw your video on making your own soil.... And then proceeded to make it himself instead of spending $$$ on fancy dirt. New plant parent, loving it. ❤
Great tips. Can’t wait to see semi hydro videos. I’m moving from soil to Pon. Biggest issue is don’t add a reservoir right away. I usually go 3-4 weeks top watering to help rinse dust before adding a reservoir. The one time I didn’t my black velvet got root rot.
I just absolutely love your humor!!!! Haven't find the time to put into practice your many well-argumented plant-adored tips and tricks, yet I keep excitingly watching your videos as if a new episode of my new favorite series was out! Please, keep feeding my TH-cam notification panel! 😅😊
Yes, like so many others, I came here for the plants and stayed for the laughs. I learn a lot and just thoroughly enjoy your content, humour and delivery, great videos, thank you! Have purchased the same moisture meter and Stresscoat on the strength of your advice, happy with both moves. 😎
I had a spider plant that needed transplanting and when I pulled it out of the small pot in the bottom of it was all root so I cut a bunch of it off just like in the other video. I did that yesterday so we’ll see what happens. Like some of the routes were so thick they look like small wax beans. And this was in like a 6 inch pot so I’m glad I guess I got to it as fast as I could.
This video is a shining star, thank you so much. I always knew my plants talked to each other about me, and you confirmed it!!! LOL. I don't have any of the problems you highlighted, but it was good information to ward ithem off from happening. Also, seeing your vast variety of plants helps with my plant shopping for new additions (have to put self-control in overdrive for that one.) I can't thank you enough - you are the best!
I keep skewers of 3 sizes in empty vases handy and use them to steer my plants into a nice, centered, vertical direction when they are prone to leaning.. I don’t tie anything up or stab into the roots aggressively.. I just use them to lean my plants more upright and adjust every so often as I rotate my plants and they’re looking lovely!
Since I discovered your channel I've been caring for my plants much better, in fact I'm becoming quite obsessive! My moisture meter was already indispensable and now I'm finding grow lamps a revelation. Always pleased to see a new video.
I’ve started to switch to more soilless medias like aroid mixes to avoid gnats. I just try to give the plants the best conditions I can and I fertilize with a liquid fish fertilizer during watering . Yup I’ve also been doing lots of leca and pon. Pon for the smaller rooted plants and leca for monstera. I just transitioned a bushy monstera plant into leca and some leaves turned yellow but it’s pushing lots of new leaves and I have it more light. It’s really humid in southeast America so it loves it and I give it rainwater in the bottom and leave it.
I LOVE LECA for houseplants. No gnats, no risk of overwatering. I use it for my cuttings, but I've also cleaned soil from small houseplants and transplanted them into LECA. Keep the water level below the top layer of LECA and no mosquitoes either. I have a whole windowsill garden with LECA in containers I made from plastic milk containers.
@@SheffieldMadePlantsNope. Even in my dry climate, it's no more maintenance than my potted houseplants. Water and fertilize the same was the rest of my plants, and trim/thin as needed as with potted plants. Since I use opaque-sided containers, I don't even have to deal with algae growth in the water column or on the LECA that's often a problem in transparent/translucent containers/vases.
New Subscriber here.! Greetings from Panama City Beach Florida. I do enjoy your channel and have been container gardening mostly outdoors for 4 years, and trying to introduce some to indoors. Info you provide is valuable. The wit and humor is fresh. Thank you.!
I followed your advice for my Peace Lilly. Three beautiful white 'flowers'!! Going to buy her a light, next. Thank you Mr. Sheffield. By the way, I'm in Lincoln UK
I really appreciate your sense of humor. It makes these videos all the more enjoyable. Thank you for always making me laugh and learn at the same time. :)
Really love the video your tips are priceless I now have a moisture metre and would not be without it. I also have a magnifier you suggested in another video it’s amazing what you find on your plants and in the compost I have saved quite a few plants using this and that includes garden plants. Thank you
Thank you so much Richard, I really really enjoyed watching and listening to you once again. You always make a lot of sense and your knowledge is vast. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
I have started using bottom watering and the cutting method when re-pot my plants at least for the little bigger ones. And it has been working great no plant has died from getting their root cut and I save a ton of space to not needing to get a larger pot every time. Although first time cutting the roots was a little bit scary and nerve wrecking. Also the bottom watering is great because then you know the soil really gets the water. I usually bottom water and leave it for the next day and pour out the left over water and also I think it looks a little nicer when the top soil isn't wet and soggy. Thanks for these tips!😀
😅 good giggles and tips. If you’re venturing into PON I’ve been loving no drainage for lots of my plants with great success, notably alocasias and prayer plants which can be tricky customers. I often hunt the charity shops for good glassware and it’s great to see the roots develop.
The humourous style really suits you, it keeps me coning back for more, Well done and Thanks. I did cut the roots of 2 peace lilies after watching the video on that topic, and they are doing great! Thinking about it logically, it makes sense as the root is just looking for water, a long root is just wasted space. Dunno why I didnt think of it before.
Try the Pon out 😊. I have everything in pon and the plants seem to like it. I use both terracotta and self watering pots dependent on whether plants are thirsty ones or not. Hoyas are in terracotta (I have around 50) and the rest philodendrons, monstera, peace lilies etc are in self watering pots. Enjoyed the video, your editing is top notch!
I really like LECA, it’s so low maintenance. But I will say that’s it’s not all the same quality!! I bought some at my local nursery that caused this white mold & almost killed my plants but the stuff I bought on Amazon was great!! I actually think PON is even easier because it can have nutrients right in it & it’s not as prone to rot if you miss removing some of the soil from the roots. I used to buy it on Etsy & use self-watering pots. I’ve never had fungus gnat problems with LECA or PON either.
As if by some DNA programming, I have reached my late 50s and have fallen head over heels with plants and my garden. This channel is brilliant and going to be a great aid for my educational advancement.
I have an ongoing gnat problem and I had been wondering whether the compost was causing the issue. I’ve tried adding cinnamon which improved things on my Alocasia Zebrina, Will see how the sticky traps fair over the coming weeks.
Best video so far. Hilarious and very informative way. You are such a genuine guy! I have a husband with nothing growing on his head too,no remedy for that,oh well at least my plants are growing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
What do you use to glaze your terra cotta pots? Cutting the bottom roots works very well. While separating my starfish snake plant the bottom of the soil kind of just fell off.. lol. but after 3 months in separate pots both of the babies that I repotted have at least 1 baby and the momma plant has new growth. Pruning plants is essential for healthy plants.
Hey! I just want to say I absolutely love your videos; they've been a lifesaver in helping me care for my plants. 🌿 Quick question: Whenever I try bottom watering, I notice some soil leaking out. Do you think using a plastic mesh to cover the drainage hole is a good idea, or would it affect water drainage too? Any tips? Thanks for being awesome!🪴
I use drywall mesh tape for the bottom of my pots (when they have large drainage holes), and one side is sticky, so it helps the mesh stay in place and not shift.
Your most amusing yet! Well done Mr S, Edinburgh next ? I’ll take away a few of those tips…in particular the taking my monsteras outside for a hose down
I love your channel! So informative and funny. I’ve learned so much from you. And yes, I got a moisture meter - best thing ever 😜Keep making your excellent enjoyable videos!
Semi-hydro is the way! I’ve discovered this method through talking to someone in the comments under your video. It’s been a couple of months of trial and error (with some failures along the way). And… I think I’ve mastered it! My calathea (the last surviving one 😂) is happy!
Great video's over and over, about cutting the 'hair' of our plants. Can we do this in any season, or also only spring summer and fall? Greats keep making this informative fun video's 💝
The radiator and the window fact is funny... all my plants are there and I got them during summer so no radiators on. Where am i suppose to put them now with the winter coming? The kitchen window sill does not have a heater underneath but it tends to be smoky there. Where can I get light?
I tried using ground cinnamon to get rid of gnats but it didn't work very long, only worked while dry. I had a lot of cinnamon sticks (leftovers from Xmas crafts) and laid them around all my plants and for months I haven't seen any critters. Yeah! Love your comedy instructions. I just received a couple of live orchid plants. I know nothing about them. My friends saw my artificial orchids and thought I did so well with them. Wish me luck. LOL From another friend I received a spider plant. Her friend had gave it a "trim" not knowing anything about them. Needless to say It will be a while before that one gets around my plants. "No they don't need a trim. Now it probably won't have babies and I wanted to be a grandma. So go away!" Richard, Thank you for the laughs and the wonderful info. You are the best one on TH-cam. Hugs!
Loved the dark humour. Thanks for the video. I wonder why dont you grow herbs like Lemon Balm, Bee Balm, or others that would give your house an awesome fragrance? Thanks, again.
HOWDY! I use pebbles in my saucers religiously. I water as you have taught me to, but never with tap water because we have very, very, very hard water. The saucers pebbles are for humidity. But, I do not live in Jolly Old England, I live in the Mojave Desert in the Southwest U.S. When it rains twice a year, I put all my plants outside to get a wash and a flush. They love it! Question - Doesn't your tap water have chlorine in it? Your plants attest to your care, but if I must use tap water, I let it sit for at least three hours for the chlorine to evaporate. Happy Trails!
Fungus gnats are a nightmare. I’ve started sterilising any compost I intend to use inside the house by baking it at a low temperature in the oven until it gets to about 80 degrees, which seems to be hot enough to kill off the larvae. Since starting to do this I’ve not had any gnats. Apart from ones brought in on shop bought plants. Can never avoid them entirely!
Great advice. I was skeptical about bottom watering at first, but after a brutal fungus knat invasion, I'm an adherent. Sometimes it takes a few hours for the water to be absorbed, but it's all good. Less water on top of the soil = less knats.
Ohhh, Richard, I love this video! Is this a new format for you, putting in lots of great humor? I knew you had a great funny bone, but this is awesome! Keep doing it. I haven't been watching videos lately, been under the weather so if I'm late to the party, sorry. Love it!!
I got a few new houseplants recently as a gift and been watching a ton of your videos. Bottom watering as you suggest, using a moisture meter. However, for several plants, the soil seems to stay moist and not dry out a all -- i.e. I watered them 4 weeks ago and the soil is still moist. I'm wondering if it's a problem I need to resolve and if so, how. Or should I just be patient and wait? Plants in question: Rubber plant, Philodendron, ZZ plant.
@rvantong I've found that most of the plants I've bought at the store (the only place I buy from) are planted in what looks like peat moss. Whatever it is, it really holds onto the water! I now take the plants out of the pots and either put them in a container of water to develop water roots, or I put them directly into leca, depending on the plant type. No more soil for me!
@@rvantong i'd check it out and see what the deal is. If it seems really heavy and dense then consider changing it to something lighter with perlite etc
I love Sybotanica's semi-hydro but I live in the US and can't find it here. I bought one bag at a local nursery and after trying it loved it better than Pon. I hope someday they will start selling it in the US again.
I thought I had reached my love capacity for your channel but apparently I was wrong; your content just keeps getting funnier and funnier, every time!👏🤣 However, as much as I thoroughly enjoy your humor, the bedrock of my channel-love stems from my brand new green thumb that you’ve helped me grow! (all puns intended;-)). No exaggeration, you’re channel has taken me from 3 Pothos (which I consider unkillable) to 34 new and thriving plants, including some of the more persnickety varieties. I actually have a thriving basil plant for the first time, after decades of trying 1-2 times per summer to get them to last even a week! And, I’m also pruning and propagating like a boss!! I credit you, Sir, for my magical plant windows which have so completely enhanced my environment for the better. So, thank you for my new green thumb, and your giggle-fest tutorials that helped grow it!!🙏👏
@@SheffieldMadePlants My pleasure! You work hard on your content and it has made such a positive impact on my environment; how could I not let you know?! And I don’t want to be rude, but I don’t like your videos… I Love them!😉🤣
Thank you !! I will order to repot a few monstera babies I got, they’re getting ready for a bigger pot. Thanks to your tips, now I’ve been enjoying caring for my plants instead of worrying about how long they will live!! 😍🪴
I had a Big problem with gnats aswell… changed to lechuza selfwatering pots with their own soil … its like rocks without any dirt… i havent had any flie/gnats problems since and plants been growing way more Per year then they “suppose” to be able to, acording to plant guides .. the plant pots are expensive tho but changed just the soil to their Rocky soil should do the trick aswell
I swap the trash around from different types of plants. In the wild, the leaf litter feeds the plant. Swapping pots and species is my attempt to reduce problems. Seems to work, but I do keep my potted plants outside. If I start to get indoor plants, I'll follow your rules. I am moving to a colder clime soon and if I want my beautiful tropicals they will have to be inside I guess.
I chopped my fiddle leaf but not even a month later it’s grow four leaves in the same area like a hydra. Would it be an issue if I chopped off this new growth?
I clean all my plants each week with a soft (fuzzyish) cloth and a soft makeup brush set. The brush set us amazing for furry leaves as well as getting into rosette type plants. My question is this- Can all plants (other than furry leaved) be done in the shower?
Great video :D but I can't help not to touch my plants, they are growing so beautifully. Next on my shopping list is Calathea rufibarba because of one fluffy side of the leaves :D (and yes, I realize that Calatheas are fussy and I should not be touching them in any way or they'll get mad at me xD)

Best video so far. Hilarious and very informative way. You are such a genuine guy! I have a husband with nothing growing on his head too,no remedy for that,oh well at least my plants are growing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
Wow, thank you!
Congratulations. Your delivery makes your video more appealing.
Thank you very much!
Your root pruning video saved my peace lily. Thank you! ❤
My pleasure 😊
So witty! I liked your videos before but now I love them. Keep being you! 💞
Thank you! Will do!
Absolutely. I bought a glaze from amazon suitable for clay pots
Waking up to a new video from my favorite plant tuber? Yes please! 🙏🏻
Thank you 😊
Love your sense of humor, your videos are very entertaining, greetings from Rhode island, USA 🇺🇸
Thanks so much!
This is my favorite video of yours so far! Thanks from the States!
Glad you enjoyed it!
"Water like a little fairy."🤣
🤭
Thank you 😊. Yes a mesh should help and won’t do any harm
I use drywall mesh tape for the bottom of my pots (when they have large drainage holes), and one side is sticky, so it helps the mesh stay in place and not shift.
Your most amusing yet! Well done Mr S, Edinburgh next ? I’ll take away a few of those tips…in particular the taking my monsteras outside for a hose down
Hehe Edinburgh here I come
Always enjoyed and learned thank you 🙏,last few still didn’t watch…but soon will..
Thanks!
Great wit giving your plants personality and attitude. Very entertaining!
Thank you very much!
How do you glaze terracotta pots? What type of coating should be used?
I bought a glaze off Amazon suitable for clay pots
9:16 I think that part depends on the plant. I've found the pothos love to be touched. Although pothos IS very easy to grow.
Yeah they’re robust
As a person who never had house plants before a few days ago... I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You have earned a sub.
Awesome! Thank you!
Excellent video. Informative yet fun. Keep up the great work.
Much appreciated!
So funny .
love your sarcasm😂😂😂
I tried the bottom water for my rubber plant..so far, so good!
That's great!
That scrolling for a new car killed me. Thanks for the knowledge and chuckle.
My pleasure 😊 Thanks for watching
Mr Sheffield! I love your videos, so entertaining. I've learned so much!
Glad to hear it!
Wait was the problem with your own mix? I’m late on the train here🙈 why did it attract flies and the ready mixed doesn’t?
I think compost is very active and has fungal matter which the gnats love
@@SheffieldMadePlants ah! Got it🤓
Gnats is such a funny sounding word, for something so bothersome😂
I love your channel! So informative and funny. I’ve learned so much from you. And yes, I got a moisture meter - best thing ever 😜Keep making your excellent enjoyable videos!
That is awesome!
Semi-hydro is the way! I’ve discovered this method through talking to someone in the comments under your video. It’s been a couple of months of trial and error (with some failures along the way). And… I think I’ve mastered it! My calathea (the last surviving one 😂) is happy!
Cool thanks for sharing
I love semi-hydroponics. I use leca. My plants are loving it too.
Semi-hydro is definitely the way!!
Great video's over and over, about cutting the 'hair' of our plants. Can we do this in any season, or also only spring summer and fall? Greats keep making this informative fun video's 💝
Yea any time. New growth might wait till spring but doesn’t matter
Great, i'll start cutting. Thank so much for answering, have a great day and weekend@@SheffieldMadePlants 😜😆💖
Never mind pebble trays - converting to semi-hydro is a lot more effective and takes up less space!
I’ll be trying it
The radiator and the window fact is funny... all my plants are there and I got them during summer so no radiators on. Where am i suppose to put them now with the winter coming? The kitchen window sill does not have a heater underneath but it tends to be smoky there. Where can I get light?
Any fireplace mantels or anything?
So go away!"
Richard, Thank you for the laughs and the wonderful info. You are the best one on TH-cam. Hugs!
Like it! Thanks for watching 😁
Loved the dark humour.
Thanks for the video.
I wonder why dont you grow herbs like Lemon Balm, Bee Balm, or others that would give your house an awesome fragrance?
Thanks, again.
Thanks! Not really considered it but might do now
My water is pretty good but does have chlorine. I dechlorinate and it makes all the difference
Thanks for the tip
Great advice. I was skeptical about bottom watering at first, but after a brutal fungus knat invasion, I'm an adherent. Sometimes it takes a few hours for the water to be absorbed, but it's all good. Less water on top of the soil = less knats.
Absolutely 👍
Ohhh, Richard, I love this video! Is this a new format for you, putting in lots of great humor? I knew you had a great funny bone, but this is awesome! Keep doing it. I haven't been watching videos lately, been under the weather so if I'm late to the party, sorry. Love it!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I desperately need to know is it safe to use Expanding soil if U don't have soil at the time of transplanting?
So happy to have found you! I laugh and learn!❤
Me too 😁
I got a few new houseplants recently as a gift and been watching a ton of your videos.
Might be the wrong soil mix that is staying wet for too long
Does that mean I should repot them already, even though they're fresh from the store?@@SheffieldMadePlants
I Love your video. It's very funny and very knowledgable at the same time😂😂 Thank u ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
4:44 in sweden there's some chocolate cakes with coconut flakes on, it looks great
I love Sybotanica's semi-hydro but I live in the US and can't find it here.
So, thank you for my new green thumb, and your giggle-fest tutorials that helped grow it!!🙏👏
Wow thank you! Glad you like the videos 😁
@@SheffieldMadePlants My pleasure! You work hard on your content and it has made such a positive impact on my environment; how could I not let you know?! And I don’t want to be rude, but I don’t like your videos… I Love them!😉🤣
@@janedarc7731 legend!
You are the king of planty TH-cam comedy. 😂 Skillz! Well done you.
Appreciate that!
I have never cut my plant's roots like that but mine are mostly pretty young but I have had to repot some. I always just put them in a bigger pot.
Yeah not so much an issue with young plants growing out
Very informative, thank you for sharing!
What soil mix do you recommend for Monstera’s?
An aroid mix is good. Something nice and chunky
Thank you for your plant caring loving humor 🌻🌹🦋🌻🌹🦋🌻🌹🦋
Thanks for watching 😁
I swap the trash around from different types of plants. In the wild, the leaf litter feeds the plant. Swapping pots and species is my attempt to reduce problems. Seems to work, but I do keep my potted plants outside. If I start to get indoor plants, I'll follow your rules. I am moving to a colder clime soon and if I want my beautiful tropicals they will have to be inside I guess.
Fair enough 😁
I chopped my fiddle leaf but not even a month later it’s grow four leaves in the same area like a hydra. Would it be an issue if I chopped off this new growth?
Wouldn’t harm the plant
@@SheffieldMadePlants thank you so much! I really appreciate your expertise
Absolutely love seeing every new video 💚 and loving your funny side
Yay! Thank you!
I clean all my plants each week with a soft (fuzzyish) cloth and a soft makeup brush set. The brush set us amazing for furry leaves as well as getting into rosette type plants. My question is this- Can all plants (other than furry leaved) be done in the shower?
Yep
Love your videos. They are, as others have said, getting more and more entertaining. 😊
Thank you 😊
@@SheffieldMadePlants I risked everything today and chopped the top off my eifell tower rubber plant. Plenty to try and grow from cuttings!
@@ghengis430 it’ll be grand 👍
I love your fun plant videos. 🪴❤️
Thank you 😊
Great video :D but I can't help not to touch my plants, they are growing so beautifully. Next on my shopping list is Calathea rufibarba because of one fluffy side of the leaves :D (and yes, I realize that Calatheas are fussy and I should not be touching them in any way or they'll get mad at me xD)
They’ll talk about you behind your back 😂
